요셉 슐람 – 이스라엘 예루살렘에서
레위기는 기독교회에서 가장 연구되지 않는 책 중 하나입니다. 그렇습니다, 레위기는 처음에는 주로 성전(광야에서는 성막)에서의 제사와 관련된 문제들을 다루는 것 같은 인상을 줍니다. 그런데 그렇지 않습니다! 레위기는 모든 예슈아의 제자들에게 매일의 삶과 성스러운 관행에 있어서 근본이 되는 가장 중요한 원리를 가르치기 위한 플랫폼으로 제사장제도와 제사제도를 사용합니다. 레위기가 없었거나, 진심 어린 관심과 헌신으로 연구하며 하나님께서 모세와 레위인들에게 하신 말씀의 모든 페이지에서 진주와 금덩어리를 찾아내지 않고 무시했다면, 우리의 믿음은 쓸모없었을 것이고 거룩과 신성함은 우리와 우리의 공동체로부터 아주 동떨어진 것이 되었을 것입니다.
레위기에서 우리는 예슈아와 사도들이 사용한 가장 유명한 말씀, “네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라!”는 말씀을 배웁니다. 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 히브리어로 “아하레이 모트”, 즉 “죽은 후에”라고 부릅니다. 토라 포션은 레위기 16:1~18:30입니다.
선지서 포션(하프타라)는 에스겔 22:1-19를 읽을 것입니다.
신약성경 복음서에서는 마태복음 15:10–20과 마가복음 12:28-34를 읽을 것입니다. 저는 이번 토라 포션의 첫 부분을 논하고 싶습니다. 이 말씀은 우리를 성경 전체에서 가장 기본적이며 핵심적인 원리 중 하나로 인도합니다. 이 말씀은 성경 전반에 형제자매 구절이 있으며 신약성경의 예슈아와 사도들의 가르침에 깊이 자리하고 있습니다. “여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르라 나는 여호와 너희의 하나님이니라 너희는 너희가 거주하던 애굽 땅의 풍속을 따르지 말며 내가 너희를 인도할 가나안 땅의 풍속과 규례도 행하지 말고 너희는 내 법도를 따르며 내 규례를 지켜 그대로 행하라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라 너희는 내 규례와 법도를 지키라 사람이 이를 행하면 그로 말미암아 살리라 나는 여호와이니라” (레위기 18:1-5) 원리 #1: 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니, 너희는 땅의 제국들처럼 그들을 따라 행하며 살지 말지니라. Principle #2: 너희가 내가 너희에게 명한 것을 행하고 너희가 행하도록 의도한 나의 법대로 살면, 너희는 지금과 영원히 생명이 있을 것이다! 지혜와 명령의 이 두 원리는 말하기는 간단하지만 지키고 행하기에는 아주 간단하지 않습니다. 레위기에 여러 번 나오는 이 강력한 말씀은 “나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라.”입니다. 여러분은 전능자로부터의 이 선언이 여러분으로 하여금 행실을 고쳐 올바르게 행동하도록 할 만큼 아주 강력하다고 생각하지 않을지 모르겠지만, 우리가 하나님의 명령에 불순종한 결과를 알게 되기까지 그리 오래 걸리지는 않습니다. 이 간단한 문구는 왜이며 가능한 가장 강력한 동기입니다. 오히려 하나님께서 토라에서 “이것을 행하라, 그러면 너희가 10달러를 받을 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨다면, 사람들이 10달러를 받으려고 1마일이나 되는 줄을 길게 설 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그분의 명령에 “나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라.”라는 말을 덧붙이셨습니다. 우리가 명령을 지키고 이 세상의 창조주이며 주인이신 우리 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 것과 다른 동기로 선을 행한다면, 우리의 순종은 진심 어린 것이 아닌 것이 될 것이며 믿음과 관계에 근거한 것이 아닌 것이 될 것입니다! 저의를 기지고 순종하는 것은 가증한 일입니다. 여러분이 옳지 않은 이유로 여러분의 아내에게 다이아몬드 반지를 준다면, 여러분의 아내는 여러분의 얼굴에 그 반지를 던져버릴 것입니다. 다음은 이사야 선지자가 이스라엘 민족에게 한 말입니다: “여호와께서 말씀하시되 너희의 무수한 제물이 내게 무엇이 유익하뇨 나는 숫양의 번제와 살진 짐승의 기름에 배불렀고 나는 수송아지나 어린 양이나 숫염소의 피를 기뻐하지 아니하노라 너희가 내 앞에 보이러 오니 이것을 누가 너희에게 요구하였느냐 내 마당만 밟을 뿐이니라 헛된 제물을 다시 가져오지 말라 분향은 내가 가증히 여기는 바요 월삭과 안식일과 대회로 모이는 것도 그러하니 성회와 아울러 악을 행하는 것을 내가 견디지 못하겠노라” (이사야 1:11–13) 이사야 1장은 하나님의 명령에 순종하는 것을 올바른 위치에 두고 있기에 중요한 본문입니다. 또한, 이 세상의 창조주와 그분의 자녀와의 관계도 다른 패러다임으로 제시되어 있습니다. 우상숭배는 사람이 숭배하여 번제를 드리는 우상은 스스로 아무 것도 할 수 없기 때문에 씻어줘야 하고 광을 내주어야 하고 사람의 봉사가 필요하다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다. 레위기 16장 본문에서 하나님의 명령에 대한 순종은 개인적 이득이나 “형통”을 위한 동기가 아닌, 순수한 동기로 우리 마음 깊은 곳에서 우러나올 때에만 유효하다는 것이 분명합니다. 우리의 동기가 우리의 제물의 가치보다 더 중요합니다. 이번 토라 포션에서 우리가 배우는 그 다음 사항은 히브리어로 “욤 하키푸림”이라고 부르는 속죄일 제사 절차입니다. 7월(티슈리월) 10일인 이 날은 히브리 달력에서 가장 거룩한 날로 여겨집니다. 이 날은 25시간 동안 금식하며 그 시간 대부분 기도하는 날입니다. 속죄일에는 우리 각 사람이 회개하며 가능한 모든 곳에서 배상해야 하기에 우리 개인의 죄를 다루지 않습니다. 속죄일에는 우리 민족, 정부, 지도자들의 죄, 즉 집단적 죄를 다룹니다. 같은 크기와 외양을 가진 염소 두 마리를 대제사장에게 가져오면 대제사장이 제비를 뽑습니다. 이 중 하나는 성막에서 제단에 제물로 드려지고 다른 하나는 제물로 드려지지 않는 아사셀입니다. 아사셀은 꼴을 먹이고 예쁘게 꾸미고 대제사장이 그 머리에 안수하는 중에 온 이스라엘의 집단적 죄를 고백한 후 광야에 풀어놓습니다. 욤 하키푸림, 속죄일에 있어서 중요한 것은 이 명령입니다: “이는 너희에게 안식일 중의 안식일인즉 너희는 스스로 괴롭게 할지니 영원히 지킬 규례라” (레위기 16:31) 속죄일도 “거룩한 안식일”이며, “스스로 괴롭게 하라”는 명령은 25시간 동안 먹고 마시지 않는 금식으로 해석됩니다. 이 날 이스라엘에서는 대부분의 사람들이 회당에 가서 기도합니다. 이 날 대부분의 시간 가장 고무적인 기도 중 어떤 것들은 인간의 언어로 된 것입니다. 이 날 네 차례 고백 목록을 큰 소리로 낭독합니다. 고백 목록은 긴데요, 약 150가지 죄가 열거되어 있습니다. 이 고백 목록은 너무 길어서 이 기도 목록에 포함시킬 수는 없습니다. 저는 이 고백 목록에 열거된 죄 중에서, 예를 들어, 뒷담화나 여러분의 것이 아닌 물건을 실수로 가져온다거나 하는 등 최소한 마음속으로 20개에서 30개 체크하지 않을 사람이 있을까 싶습니다. 심지어 약속하고 지키지 않은 것도 이 고백 목록에 들어있는 죄 중 하나입니다. 예루살렘에 있는 저희 회중(교회)에서 저희가 욤 하키푸림을 지킬 때 저는 언제나 이 긴 고백 목록을 낭독합니다. 저는 그렇게 하는 것을 좋아하는데요, 그 이유는 이것이 저에게 제가 얼마나 하나님의 대속이 필요한지를 상기시켜 주기 때문입니다. 이것은 또 제게 유대민족에게 성전도 성별된 제사장직도 없다는 것과 오늘날 우리에게 있는 유일한 참된 대속은 우리 메시아 구주 예슈아뿐이라는 것을 상기시켜 주기 때문입니다. 흥미로운 것은 정규 정통유대교의 욤 하키푸림 기도서 끝부분에 다음과 같은 문구를 가진 기도가 있습니다. 이 시를 히브리어에서 번역하면 이렇습니다: “그때, 창세 전에 – 그분께서는 거처와 이논을 두셨습니다. 태초부터, 어떤 나라나 방언을 계획하기 전에 – 그분께서는 높은 곳에 세워진 성전을 계획하셨습니다. 그분께서는 잘못하는 자들을 바른 길로 인도하도록 그분의 거룩한 임재가 그곳에 나타나도록 계획하셨습니다. 악이 주홍같이 붉어질 때 – 그분께서는 “너희를 씻어 너희를 깨끗케 하라”는 말씀으로 그 악보다 앞서 가셨습니다. 그분께서 그분의 위엄 있는 자에게 분노하게 되더라도 – 거룩한 분께서는 그분의 모든 진노를 쏟지는 않으십니다. 우리는 지금까지 우리의 욕심의 노예가 되어왔지만, 우리의 반석께서는 우리 위에 군림하지 않으셨습니다. 우리의 의가 되시는 메시아께서 우리에게서 돌아서 가시니, 우리는 어찌할 바를 모르고 우리를 의롭다 해줄 사람이 아무도 없습니다. 그분께서 우리의 허물과 우리의 죄의 멍에를 친히 지시고, 우리의 허물 때문에 욕을 당하셨습니다(혹은, 찔리셨습니다). 그분께서 우리의 죄과의 사함을 찾기 위해 우리의 죄를 그분의 어깨에 지셨습니다. 우리는 그분의 상함으로 나음을 입었습니다 – 지금은 영원한 자를 새로운 피조물로 새로이 지을 때입니다. 그를 (땅의) 세계에서 들어올리고, 그를 세일(=에돔)에서 끌어올리고, 우리로 하여금 이논의 손으로 다시 레바논 산 꼭대기에 서신 그분의 음성을 듣게 하소서.” 표준 아슈케나지 정통유대교의 속죄일 특별기도서에 포함되어 있는 이 기도의 저자는 비범하며 메시아를 믿는 사람으로 이사야 53장에서 최소 세 문구를 인용하고 있습니다. “이논”이라는 이름은 흥미롭습니다. 이것은 성경에서 시편 72:17에 딱 한 번 나오는 독특한 이름입니다. 이 시편의 히브리어가 번역하기에 아주 난해하기 때문에, 각각의 번역본은 “이논”이라는 이름을 준 방식이 서로 다릅니다. 그러나 영어로 번역된 모든 번역본이 분명하게 메시아이며 구주이신 예슈아와 연관되어 있습니다. 속죄일은 이스라엘의 모든 유대인 중 70%가 금식하고 기도하며 자기의 죄를 기억하고 내년에는 더 잘 살겠다고 자신에게 다짐하고 약속하는 날입니다. 속죄일에 대한 계명과 명령은 다음 안식일에 모든 회당에서 읽는 토라 포션에 있습니다. 지구상에 매년 우리의 죄와 우리에게 성경의 모든 예언적 기대와 약속을, 특별히 이사야 53장의 모든 예언을 이룬 – 갈릴리 호수 물 위를 걸으시고 폭풍 이는 파도를 잔잔케 하신 갈릴리의 외로운 남자를 통해 아주 특별하게 이룬 – 메시아가 필요함을 상기시켜 주는 그런 날이 있는 다른 민족이나 종교 집단은 없습니다. 지난 주부터 저희는 새로운 콘텐츠를 올리고 있습니다. 여러분은 저희 팟캐스트와 유튜브에서 찾아보실 수 있습니다. 저희는 인쇄 도서 주문을 포함하여 아마존 킨들용으로도 새로 더 올렸습니다. 저희는 “숨겨진 보물들(Hidden Treasures)”을 새로 업데이트했고, 몇몇 새 책들도 작업 중입니다.

The book of Leviticus is one of the books that is studied least in the Christian Churches. Yes, the book of Leviticus at first sight indeed gives the impression that it deals mainly with issues concerning the worship in the Temple (Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness). But it doesn’t! The book of Leviticus uses the priesthood and the sacrificial system as a platform to teach some of the most important principles that are foundational for any disciples of Yeshua in daily life and holy practices. If the book of Leviticus did not exist or if it is ignored and not studied with sincere interest and commitment, glean the pearls and gold nuggets from the pages and words of God to Moses and the Levites our faith would be useless, and sanctity and holiness would be far far far away from us and our communities.
In the book of Leviticus, we learn the most popular text used by Yeshua himself and the Apostles, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself!” Our reading this Shabbat is from a portion called in Hebrew Acharei Mot = After the Death. The Torah reading is from Leviticus 16:1-18:30.
The Prophets (The Haftarah), we will read from Ezekiel 22:1-19.
The Gospels, the reading will be from Matthew 15:10–20 and Mark 12:28-34. I want to discuss the very beginning of our Torah Portion. This text brings us to one of the most basic and essential principles in the whole Bible. This text has many brothers and sister texts through the Bible and deep into the teaching of Yeshua and the Apostles in the New Testament. “Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God. According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 18:1-5 NKJV) Principle #1: Because I am your Lord and your God, you will not follow, practice, and live like the earthly empires. Principle #2—If you do what I instruct and live according to my laws, which I designed for you to practice, you will have life now and forever! These two verses of wisdom and instructions are simple to state but very complicated to observe and practice. The power statement that appears multiple times in the book of Leviticus is “I am the LORD your God.” You might not think that this declaration from the Almighty is powerful enough to convince you to straighten up and fly right, but it doesn’t take us long to find out the consequences of disobedience to God’s instructions. This simple phrase is the WHY and the strongest motive possible. If God had instead said in the Torah, “Do this, and you will receive 10$”, you would have a mile-long line of people standing to crash in their 10$. But God laced His command with the words, “I am the LORD your, God.” If we keep the commandments and do good with any other motives than doing the will of our Father, who is the master and creator of this world, our obedience would not be sincere and would not be based on faith and relationship! Obedience for ulterior motives is an abomination. Even if you give a diamond ring to your wife for the wrong reason, she will throw the ring right back in your face. Here are the words of Isaiah, the prophet to the nation of Israel: “Says the LORD. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls lambs, or goats. When you come to appear before Me, who has required this from your hand to trample My courts? Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies, I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.” (Isaiah 1:11 – 13) Isaiah 1 is a significant text, as it sets obedience to God’s commandments on the right level. Also, the relationship between the world’s creator and his children is set in a different paradigm. Idolatry teaches that the idol they worship and burn sacrifice for must be washed and polished, the statue of an idol who needs this service from men because the idol is not able to do anything for itself. In our text in Leviticus 16, it is clear that God’s command is valid for our obedience only if it comes deep from our hearts with pure motives, never for personal gain or to receive “prosperity!” Our motives are more important than the value of our sacrifices. The next thing we learn from our Torah reading is the procedure for the events (worship) of the Day of Atonement, or in Hebrew, Yom HaKippurim. This Day, on the 10th Day of the 7th month of Tishri, is considered the holiest Day on the Hebrew calendar. It is a day of fasting for 25 hours and praying for much of those hours. The Day of Atonement does not deal with our private sins, for each of us has to repent and make restitution in every possible place. The Day of Atonement concerns our collective sins, the sins of our nation, government, and leadership. Two goats of the same size and outward appearance are brought to the High Priest. He casts lots. One of these goats is offered on the altar in the Tabernacle, and the other goat is the scapegoat that is not offered for sacrifice. The scapegoat is released into the wilderness after it is fed and decorated, and the High Priest lays hands on its head and confesses the collective sins of all of Israel. The big thing about Yom HaKippurim, the Day of Atonement, is the command, “It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.” (Leviticus 16:31 NKJV) The Day of Atonement is also a “Holy Sabbath, and the command to “afflict your souls” is interpreted to fast from drinking and eating for 25 hours. On this Day, most people in Israel go to the synagogues and pray. Most of the Day, some of the most inspirational prayers are in human language. On this Day, four times, a list of confessions is read aloud. The list of confessions is long, with around 150 different sins. It is too long for me to insert into this prayer list. I don’t know a human being that doesn’t have to at least mentally mark a “V” to 20 – 30 of the sins listed—things like gossip and taking something by mistake that doesn’t belong to you. Even making and not keeping promises is one of the sins on that list. In our congregation in Jerusalem, when we celebrate Yom HaKippurim, I always read this long list and enjoy it because it reminds me of how much I need God’s Atonement. It also reminds me that the Jewish nation has no temple and no sanctified priesthood and that the only real Atonement that we have in the world today is Yeshua, our Messiah, and Savior. Interestingly, in the regular orthodox Jewish prayer book for Yom HaKippurim toward the end, there is a prayer with the following words: A free translation of this poem from Hebrew says: “Then, before the beginning – He has set the abode and Yinon. From the beginning, before planning any nation or language - He has planned the established Temple on high. He has counseled to emanate his holy Presence there to lead the erring ones on straight paths. When wickedness became as red as scarlet – he has preceded it with “wash yourselves and cleanse yourselves”. Even if He became indignant with His awesome One – The Holy One will not pour His entire wrath. We have been enslaved to our greed until now, but Our Rock did not raise Himself over us. Messiah of our Righteousness has turned away from us, we were perplexed and there is no one to justify us. He bears our iniquities and the yoke of our crimes upon himself. And was profaned (or: pierced) because of our iniquities. He carries our sins on His shoulder, to find forgiveness for our misdeeds. We were healed by His bruises – It’s time to create the Eternal One anew as a new creation. Lift Him up from the circle (of the earth), draw Him up from Se’ir (=Edom), and make us hear of Him again on top of Mount Lebanon by the hand of Yinon.” The author of this prayer, which is in the standard Ashkenazi orthodox special prayer book for the Day of Atonement, is exceptional and messianic, with at least three quotations from Isaiah 53. The name Yinon is fascinating. It is a unique name that appears only once in the Bible in Psalm 72:17. Because the Hebrew of this Psalm is so complicated to translate, each translation has a different way of rendering the name Yinon. However, the whole prayer translated into English clearly relates to Yeshua as the Messiah and savior. The Day of Atonement is a day that 70% of all the Jews in Israel will fast and pray and remember their sins and make resolutions and promises to themselves to do better next year. The command and order of the Day of Atonement are from the reading of the following Shabbat in every synagogue. There is no other nation or religious group on this Earth that has that kind of Day that every year reminds us of our sins and of our need for the Messiah who fulfills all the prophetic expectations and promises from all the scriptures but especially all the predictions of Isaiah 53 – that are so uniquely fulfilled by that lone man from Galilee who walked on the water of the Sea of Galilee and calmed the waters of the storm. Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.
When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
