예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 1월 14일

이번 주 토라 포션이 전 세계와 이스라엘 땅에 일어나고 있는 일에 대해 아주 적절히 맞아 떨어지는 것은 하나님께서 애굽 사람들과 땅을 치신 재앙들 때문에 그렇습니다. 토라 포션은 출애굽기 6:2~9:35, “바에라”이고, 선지서에서 읽는 하프타라는 에스겔 28:25~29:21입니다. 신약성경에서 읽는 부분은 로마서 9:14-23입니다.
출애굽기 6:2부터의 본문은 이렇게 시작합니다: “하나님이 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 나는 여호와이니라 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 전능의 하나님으로 나타났으나 나의 이름을 여호와로는 그들에게 알리지 아니하였고” – 출애굽기 6:2–3 이번 주 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션의 시작은 정말 폭탄입니다. 이것은 주님께서 모세와 이스라엘 자손과 사실 우리 모두에게 떨어뜨리신 핵폭탄입니다! 왜냐고요? 우리가 창세기의 창조이야기로 가면 우리는 이미 창세기 1장 전체에 하나님의 이름 중 하나 - “엘로힘”만 사용하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그러다가 2:4에서 우리는 변화를 보는데요, “여호와(YHWH)”라는 이름이 성경에 처음으로 나오는 것을 봅니다. 창세기에서만 “여호와(YHWH)”가 15번 나옵니다. 성경 전체에서는 하나님의 합당한 이름 “여호와(YHWH)”가 6,828번 나옵니다. 창세기 전체로 히브리어 네 글자로 된 하나님의 이름을 포함하여 하나님의 이름이 수백 번 나옵니다. 그리고 이제 우리는 출애굽기로 왔고 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하십니다, “나는 여호와이니라 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 전능의 하나님(엘-샤다이)으로나타났으나 나의 이름을 여호와로는 그들에게 알리지 아니하였다.” 이 민족의 조상들, 전능하신 하나님과 개인적 관계를 맺었던 저들이, 자기 아들 이삭을 아끼지 않고 제단에 묶어 제물로 바칠 준비가 되어 있던 아브라함이 주님을 그분의 가장 거룩한 이름으로는 알지 못했다고요? 창세기 22:14로 가서 거기에 써있는 것을 봅시다: “아브라함이 그 땅 이름을 여호와 이레라 하였으므로 오늘날까지 사람들이 이르기를 여호와의 산에서 준비되리라 하더라.” – 창세기 22:14 아브라함은 자기 입으로 말합니다: 주(여호와)께서 준비해 주시리라. 그럼, 친애하는 형제님들! 여기에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는 것일까요? 아브라함이 주(여호와)의 이름을 말하며 그의 독자 이삭 대신 양을 하나님께서 준비해 주신다고 기리며 그 곳을 “여호와 이레(여호와께서 준비해 주시리라)”로 부르면서 어떻게 주(여호와)의 이름을 모를 수 있을까요? 출애굽기 첫 몇 장에서 출애굽기 저자가 이미 주의 이름이 “여호와”인 것을 안다는 것 역시 분명합니다. 예를 들어, 출애굽기 3:13-15를 보십시오: “모세가 하나님께 아뢰되 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 가서 이르기를 너희의 조상의 하나님이 나를 너희에게 보내셨다 하면 그들이 내게 묻기를 그의 이름이 무엇이냐 하리니 내가 무엇이라고 그들에게 말하리이까 하나님이 모세에게 이르시되 나는 스스로 있는 자이니라 또 이르시되 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 이같이 이르기를 스스로 있는 자가 나를 너희에게 보내셨다 하라 하나님이 또 모세에게 이르시되 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 이같이 이르기를 너희 조상의 하나님 여호와 곧 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님께서 나를 너희에게 보내셨다 하라 이는 나의 영원한 이름이요 대대로 기억할 나의 칭호니라.” – 출애굽기 3:13-15 자, 여기에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있습니까? 전승에 의하면 토라는 모세가 비스가산(느보산)에 올라 거기서 죽기 전에 썼습니다. 모세가 토라를 쓴 시점은 출애굽기 6장 사건 이후였습니다. 모세는 지금 족장들 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱이 주님에 대한 완전한 계시가 있었던 것은 아니었음을 알게 되었습니다. 그 계시는 향후 몇 달 동안 모세와 이스라엘 자손이 직접 겪게 될 계시입니다. 엘로힘(하나님)이라는 이름은 복수형의 총칭적인 이름입니다. 적합한 이름은 “여호와(YHWH)”로 유일하고 특유한 이름입니다. 이스라엘 밖에서는 유일하게 한 곳, 아라비아광야 외곽에 있는, 그 시기가 주전 2000년까지 거슬러 올라가는 작은 신당에서 이 이름을 볼 수 있습니다. 주님의 이 거룩한 이름의 그 외 역사는 이스라엘이 소유한 것에만 있습니다. 주님께서 그분의 거룩한 이름을 족장들에게 계시하는 위험을 감수하지 않으신 것은 그들이 개인들이었기 때문입니다. 그들의 믿음은, 말하자면, 가족 안에 있는 것이었습니다. 그들은 하나의 민족이 되기까지, 심지어 하나의 지파가 되기까지 한참 멀었기 때문입니다. 하나님의 “여호와(YHWH)”라는 이름을, 그렇게 특별한 이름에 아직 확고해지거나 준비되지 않았으며, 이주해 들어간 곳 사람들과 그 이웃들과는 너무도 다른, 그렇게 비교적 작은 일단의 사람들에게 넘겨주는 것은, 어쩌면 그들에게는 너무 과한 것이었을 것입니다. 엘 샤다이 – “전능의 하나님”은 가나안이나 애굽이나 심지어 메소포타미아 우르나 하란의 종교적 배경에 그렇게 독특한 이름은 아니었습니다. 엘이라는 신은 가나안 신 판테온의 아버지였고, 샤다이는 “산” 혹은 “능력”입니다. 엘 샤다이라는 이름은 주변 나라들의 신들의 이름과 아주 비슷한 일종의 총칭적 이름입니다. 이제 모세가 애굽이라는 대제국과 바로와 그의 군대와 대결하여 노예들을 애굽에서 구해내려 하고 있으니, 그와 이스라엘 자손은 하나님의 능력의 총력과 그분의 거룩한 이름의 계시가 있어야 했습니다. 그래서 하나님께서 모세를 보내 바로와 그의 신하와 맞서게 하기 전에 모세에게 이 계시를 주시며 그에게 이렇게 말씀하시는 것입니다, “내가 이 민족의 선조들과 대했던 모든 경우에 있어, 그들은 내가 진자 누구인지 제한적인 계시를 받았을 뿐이다. 이제 내가 너에게 내가 다른 신들 같은 신이라는 것 이상의, 시간과 존재의 주인이라는 것을 계시하는 것이다. 나는 가나안이나 애굽이나 메소포타미아의 우상들 같은 우상이 아니다. 나는 존재하는 모든 것의 실존이다. 네 눈이 보는 모든 것과 심지어 네가 그것으로 보는 그 눈이 ‘나’이다!” “이 세상은 나의 ‘실존’의 결과이다. 그것은 시작부터 무로부터 나와 가시적이고 기능하는 생명의 기운이 되었고 생명을 주고 생명을 영속시키는 ‘실존’이 되었다! 내가 ‘여호와’이기 때문에 너는 가서 바로와 온 애굽과 맞설 수 있다.” 바로 어제 한 친구가 제게 주님의 이름(여호와(YHWH))을 어떻게 발음하는지 아느냐고 물었습니다. 저는 그에게 예슈아와 사도들의 때에도 이스라엘의 위대한 랍비들과 지도자들을 포함하여 대다수는 하나님의 이 거룩한 이름을 읽을 수 없었기 때문에 그것을 어떻게 발음하는지 몰랐다고 말해주었습니다. 서기관이 필사한 토라와 선지서와 시가서 사본에 하나님의 거룩한 이름의 네 글자는 나머지 토라와 성경 같은 아람어 히브리어 사본에는 종종 쓰지 않았습니다. 이 네 글자는 고대 가나안 사본에는 쓰였지만 랍비들을 포함하여 대부분의 사람들은 어떻게 발음하는지 알지 못했습니다. 다음은 예슈아 시대에 하나님의 이름이 어떻게 쓰였는지 보여줍니다: 
제일 아랫줄은 오늘달의 현대 히브리어 같은 표준 히브리어입니다. 이것은 바벨론 유수 이후의 아람어 사본입니다. 가장 오래된 문서는 가나안 사본에 하나님의 이름이 있습니다. 요즈음 하나님의 거룩한 이름을 어떻게 발음하는지 아는 척하는 아주 많은 기독교 분파(위험한 분파)가 있습니다. 그들은 이 거룩한 이름을 어떻게 발음하는지에 대해 서로서로, 그리고 나머지 신앙계와 싸우는 분열적이고 호전적인 분파주의자들입니다. 이들 그룹이 유대인이 아니며, 공식적인 교육을 받지 않았으며, 아주 분파주의자라는 것을 잘 보여주는 주된 것은, 유대인들은 토라를 읽다가 하나님의 거룩한 이름에 이르면 그것을 아도나이(주)라고 발음하는 것입니다. 이것은 영어 번역본에서도 적합하게 ‘주’라고 번역되었습니다. 제가 여러분과 공유하고 싶은 일반적인 사항 한 가지가 더 있습니다! 성경의 모든 것은 점진적 계시라는 패러다임 위에 세워집니다. 하나님께서는 모든 것을 한 번에 모두 계시하시지 않습니다. 계시는 점진적입니다. 이는 “알아야 하는 것!”이라는 기조로 성경에서 우리에게 주는 것입니다. 저희 선조는 메시아나 하늘나라나 천국과 지옥이나 심판날이나 천년왕국 등에 대해 많이 알지 못했습니다. 주님께서는 ‘알아야 하는 것’의 기조로 그분의 자녀에게 그분의 계시를 보내주십니다. 그분께서는 지도자나 선지자에게도 모든 것을 곧바로 계시하시지 않으시지만, 그 정보가 필요한 때는 주님께서 그분의 비밀을 열어 그분의 믿음직한 자녀에게 전해주십니다. 예슈아께서도 그분의 제자들에게 똑같이 하셨는데요, 때때로 그들에게 계시를 주시며 그것을 그들만 알고 믿지 않는 자들에게 공유하지 말라고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리가 보고 있는 것은 이번 주 토라 포션도 ‘알아야 하는 것’의 기조를 따르고 있다는 것입니다. 모세는 이스라엘을 애굽에서 구해내기 위한 하나님의 최종적이고 상세한 계획을 받지 않았습니다. 주님께서는 바로에게 알려주시기 위해 필요한 계시를 단계적으로 주십니다. 오늘날도 마찬가지입니다. 성경에는 교회의 가장 교육받은 지도자들조차 사실 하나님께서 마지막 때에 무얼 하시려는 것인지에 대해서나 정확히 언제 어떻게 예슈아께서 재림하실지에 대해 분명하고 전체적인 윤곽을 꼭 집어내어 줄 수 없다는 것을 암시하는 것들이 있습니다. 소위 천년왕국과 관련된 모든 가설이 분열과 논쟁과 분파적 태도의 원인인 것은, 바로 주님께서 우리에게 언제 어떻게 그분께서 세상을 심판하러 오시는지 혹은 그 때 무슨 일이 일어날지에 대해 상세하게 설명하고, 분명하게 윤곽을 그리고, 날짜를 적시한 파워포인트 프리젠테이션을 해주시지 않으셨기 때문입니다. 오늘날 누구든 자기가 정확히 언제 어떻게 메시아께서 재림하시는지 안다고 말하거나 가르치는 자가 있다면 그 자는 예슈아께서 아시는 것보다 자기가 더 많이 안다고 주장하는 것입니다. 그러므로 제가 그런 사람에게 줄 수 있는 유일한 직함은 ‘거짓 선지자’일 것입니다. “그러나 그 날과 그 때는 아무도 모르나니 하늘의 천사들도, 아들도 모르고 오직 아버지만 아시느니라.” – 마태복음 24:36 우리가 모두 알아야 할 모든 것을 알게 될 날이 올 것이지만, 지금은 주님께서 이스라엘 자손을 종살이에서 해방시켜 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘에게 영원한 유업이며 영원한 소유로 약속하신 땅으로 그들을 인도해 들이시기 전에 애굽에서 행하신 위대한 일들을 배우도록 합시다. 주님께서 애굽에 행하시고 내리신 행동과 재앙들은, 사람이든 육축이든 애굽의 모든 처음 난 것의 죽음이라는 재앙에 이르기까지, 우상을 숭배하는 애굽인들에게 주님께서 하늘과 땅을 창조하신 창조주 유일하신 하나님이심을 보여주시기 위해 행해진 것입니다. 재앙들은 점진적이었고, 각 재앙은 애굽의 신으로 가장 대표되고 숭앙받는 능력들을 하나 하나 다룬 것이었습니다. 저는 세계가 겪고 있는 이 팬데믹도 우리 유대인과 기독교인들이 온 세계와 함께 주님을 버리고 우주의 주 하나님을 대신하여 현대의 우상들을 선택했음을 일깨우시기 위해 하나님의 능력을 보이시는 것이라고 믿습니다! 어쩌면 이제 인류가, 특히 유대인과 기독교인들이 깨어나 커피향을 맡으며 우리가 모두 세상 속으로 너무 멀리 너무 깊숙이 들어가 우리의 창조주이며 구원자이신 이스라엘의 전능하신 하나님으로부터 너무 멀리 와 버렸음을 깨달을 때가 된 것일 것입니다. 어쩌면 이 코로나바이러스에 최고의 백신은 하나님께서 그분의 아들이며 우리의 구원자이신 예슈아를 통해 우리 모두에게 주신 생명의 면류관을 받아들이고 쓰는 것일 것입니다. 이것이 이 전염병에 가장 효과적이고 즉각적인 치료법일지도 모릅니다. 저는 우리의 세상 지도자들이 이미 그들의 마음이 너무 완악해져서 이제 그들이 깨달을 수 있는 유일한 길은 그들의 세상 체제, 증권거래소, 사업, 돈, 권력의 파멸뿐인 것은 아닐까 우려됩니다. 지도자들이 성전(회당)에서 하나님께 예배하고 나와서는 가난한 사람들을 신발 한 켤레에 팔았던, 아모스와 호세아 시대처럼 말입니다. 예루살렘에서 있었던 제1회 초막절 행진 후에 마르다 스턴이 말한 것처럼: “하나님께서 성령의 운행하심으로 예루살렘에서 시작하신 일이 유럽으로 건너가서는 하나의 종교가 되었고, 미주로 건너가서는 하나의 사업이 되었습니다!” 저는 하나님의 계시의 다음 장은 하나님의 자녀인 우리 모두에게 상술되고 분명해지고 계시되기를 고대합니다. 우리가 우리 세상이 향후 10년이나 20년에 어디로 갈지 분명한 지도를 가질 수 있도록 말입니다.
저는 이 기도 목록을 쓰면서 텔레비전으로 미국 의회의 도널드 트럼프 대통령 탄핵을 보고 있었습니다. 미국 정치인들이 지난 2주 동안 보여준 복수심에 불타는 태도와 비열한 태도는 제가 전혀 이해할 수 없는 정도입니다.
미국은 성경적 믿음에 근거하여 세워졌습니다. 북미에 영국 식민지로 생겨난 첫 식민지들은 유럽에서 박해를 받던 사람들에게 피난처로서 생겨났습니다. 뉴욕시 항구에 있는 자유의 여신상에는 엠마 라자루스라는 이름의 스파라드계 유대인 여인이 쓴 아래와 같은 헌사가 있습니다. 그녀의 가문은 포르투갈에서 독일로 갔다가 거기서 브라질 헤시피로 도피한 포르투갈계 유대인 가문이었습니다.
가톨릭의 종교재판이 브라질까지 왔을 때, 특히 헤시피라는 도시까지 왔을 때, 유대인들은 브라질에서 도피하여 결국에는 오늘날 맨하탄, 뉴욕시라고 부르는 곳에 내렸습니다. 원래 가톨릭의 종교재판을 피해 달아나 맨하탄에 정주한 이 유대인들은 이곳을 뉴암스텔담이라고 불렀지만, 영국인들이 와서 장악한 후에 그 이름이 뉴욕으로 바뀐 것입니다.

‘너의 지치고, 가련한,

너의 물가에 들끊는 가련한 버려진 이들을 내게 다오.
폭풍우에 시달린, 고향 없는 이들을 내게 보내다오,
황금의 문 곁에서 나의 등을 들어 올리리니!’”
제가 지난 주에 미국 워싱턴 디.씨.에서 일어난 사건들을 보면서, 하고 싶었던 전부는 그저 주님께 미국에 주님의 긍휼을 베풀어달라고 기도하는 것뿐이었습니다. 제게는 미국 정치인들이 길을 잃고, 서로를 집어삼키고 서로를 부끄럽게 하려는 파괴적인 늑대 떼 같이 방황하고 있는 것 같이 보입니다.
등식의 양변에서 사용되고 있는 볼셰비키적 태도와 속임수 기법은 미국 헌법이나 권리장전에 서명한 사람들의 산물이 아닙니다. 양측 모두 사랑과 품위와 용서와 점잖음이 부족함을 나타내 보이고 있지만, 특히 지난 선거 승자라고 하는 자들이 더욱 그러한데, 제게는 도덕적 의연함의 쇠락과 박애정신 실종의 징표일 뿐입니다.
이것은 증오와 권력욕과 복수심에서 나온 부패와 이기적 야망의 징표입니다. 건강한 나라라면, 어느날 아침에 깨어보니 그들이 몇 푼 안 되는 돈에 자유를 팔아먹고 이제는 각자 손에 무기를 들고 오케이 목장에 서있으나, 바지는 무릎까지 내려와 있는데 속옷 입는 것을 잊고 있었고 양측 모두 밑바닥까지 드러내고 벌거벗은 상태인 것을 알아차리게 되는 그런 일이 있기 전에, 그러한 태도를 고쳐야 합니다.
미국을 위해 기도해 주시고, 정치권의 양측을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 하나님을 아는 기독교인들이 일어나 사랑으로 진리를 말하며 법과 질서를 회복하도록 노력하되, 선거에 진 이들과 이 큰 나라를 관리하고 다스리는 특권을 받은 이들에 대해 예의와 박애정신과 품위 있는 태도로 하도록 기도해 주십시오. 양측이 모두 자유와 민주주의를 보전하고 보호하도록, 비열하고 가혹한 행동이 다음 세대로 대물림되지 않도록 기도해 주십시오.
민주주의는 그 끝에 곤틀릿이 달려 있는 아주 얇은 은실로, 쉽사리 폭정으로 이어질 수 있습니다. 이런 일은 이전에 위대한 나라들에 일어났었고, 또 다시 일어날 수 있습니다. 오직 전능하신 하나님만이 이 상황을 바꾸어 온전한 정신과 정의와 진리를 원하는 이들에게 온전한 정신과 정의와 진리를 회복하실 수 있습니다. 조금 더 기도하고, 기도하고, 기도하십시오!

The Jerusalem Prayer List – January 14, 2021

The Torah reading this week is so appropriate for what is going on in the whole world and in the land of Israel, plagues, and being stricken by God both the people and the land of Egypt. The Torah reading is from Exodus chapter 6:2 – 9:35, Va’era, from the prophets, the Haftarah is from Ezekiel 28:25 – 29:21. The reading from the New Testament is from Romans 9:14-23.
The text from Exodus 6:2 starts: “And God spoke to Moses and said to him: ‘I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them.’” – Exodus 6:2–3 [NKJV] This beginning of the reading for this next Shabbat is a true bombshell. It is an atomic bomb that the Lord drops on Moses and the children of Israel and in fact on all of us! Why? Because if we go to the book of Genesis already in the story of Creation we see that the whole chapter 1 of Genesis uses only the name “God” – “Elohim”. However in chapter 2:4 we see a change and the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) appears for the first time in the Bible. In the book of Genesis alone the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) appears 15 times. In the whole Bible the proper name of God (YHWH) appears 6828 times. The whole story of Genesis has several hundred times, the name of God in the four Hebrew letters. So, now we come to the book of Exodus and the Lord says to Moses, “I am the Lord (YHWH), but to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I only appeared as God Almighty (El-Shadai).” The fathers of the nation, those who had such a personal relationship with the Almighty God, Abraham, that didn’t spare his son Isaac and tied him on the altar ready to sacrifice him, didn’t know the Lord by His most holy name? Let us go to Genesis 22:14 and see what is written there: “And Abraham called the name of the place, The–Lord–Will–Provide; as it is said to this day, ‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’” – Genesis 22:14 [NKJV] Abraham from his own mouth says: The Lord (YHWH) will provide. So, dear brothers! What is going on here? How could Abraham say the name of the Lord and celebrate that God provided a ram in place of his only son Isaac, and call that place, “The Lord will provide,” and not know the Lord’s name? It is also clear already in the book of Exodus’ earlier chapters that the writer of Exodus knows the Lord’s name to be YHWH. See for example Exodus 3:13-15: “Then Moses said to God, ‘Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they say to me, “What is His name?” what shall I say to them?’ And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.”’ Moreover God said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: “The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.” This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’” – Exodus 3:13-15 [NKJV] So, what is going on here? The Torah was written according to tradition by Moses before his climbing Mount Pisga (Nebo) and dying there. When Moses writes the Torah, it is after the events in chapter 6 of the book of Exodus. Moses now knows that the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, didn’t have the full revelation of the Lord, a revelation that Moses and the children of Israel are about to experience personally in the next months. The name Elohim (God) is generic and plural. The proper name, the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) is unique and special. Outside of Israel there is only one place in the edges of the Arabian desert that this name is found in a small shrine dated to the second millennium B.C.E. All the rest of the history of this Holy Name of the Lord is only in the possession of Israel. The Lord didn’t risk giving this revelation of His holy name to the patriarchs because they were individuals, their faith was, so to speak, in the family. They were far from being a nation or even a tribe. To hand the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) name of God to such a relatively small group of people who are not crystalized and ready for such a unique name and so different from the people and neighborhood that they moved in, would have, maybe, been too much for them. El-Shadai – “God Almighty” was not a name so unique in the religious environment of the Land of Canaan or Egypt or even in Ur or Haran in Mesopotamia. The God El was the father of the Canaanite Pantheon and Shadai is “mountain” or “power”. The name El-Shadai is a kind of generic name very similar to the names of the gods of the nations around. Now that Moses is about to take on the great empire of Egypt, Pharaoh and His army, and deliver the slaves from Egypt – He and the children of Israel had to have the full force of God’s power and revelation of His holy name. So, before God launches Moses to face Pharaoh and his court, God gives this revelation to Moses, and tells him, “In all my dealings with the forefathers of this nation, they had a limited revelation of who I really am, now I am revealing to you that I am the master of time and existence, not only a god like all the other gods. I am not an idol like the idols of Canaan and Egypt and Mesopotamia. I am the existence of everything that exists. Everything that your eyes see and even your eyes with which you see is ‘I AM!’” “The world is the fruit of my ‘existence’ – it came from its beginning out of nothingness into a tangible and functioning atmosphere of life and into a life-giving and life-perpetuating ‘existence!’ You can go and face Pharaoh and all of Egypt because I am ‘YHWH.’” Just yesterday a friend asked me if I knew how to pronounce the name of the Lord (YHWH). I told him that even in the time of Yeshua and the apostles the vast majority of Israel, including all the great rabbis and leaders of the nation, didn’t know how to pronounce the holy name of God because they couldn’t read it. In the manuscripts of the Torah and the prophets and the Psalms written by hand by scribes, the four letters that make up the holy name of God were often not written in the Aramaic Hebrew script like the rest of the Torah and the Bible. The four letters were written in the ancient Canaanite script that most of the people, including the rabbis, didn’t know how to pronounce. This is how the name of God was written in the time of Yeshua: The bottom line is regular Hebrew like modern Hebrew of today, it is Aramaic script from after the Babylonian Exile. The most ancient texts have the name of God in the Canaanite script. There are these days so many Christian sects (dangerous sects) that pretend to know how to pronounce the holy name of God. They are divisive and aggressive sectarians who fight with each other and with the rest of the believing world as to how to pronounce this holy name. The main thing that exemplifies these groups is that they are not Jewish, they are not formally educated, and they are very sectarian. Jews, when they read the Torah and come upon the Holy Name of God pronounce it: Adonai (Lord). This is also how the proper English translations have it written: Lord. There is one more general thing that I would like to share with you! All of the Bible is built on the paradigm of progressive revelation. God does not reveal everything all at once. Revelation is progressive, it is given to us in the Bible on the basis of “Need to Know!” Our forefathers did not know much about the Messiah or a heavenly Kingdom, or about heaven and hell, and judgment day, or the Millennium… The Lord sends His revelation to His children on a need-to-know basis. He also does not reveal everything right away, not even to the leaders and prophets, but as the information is needed the Lord opens up His secrets and delivers them to His faithful children. Yeshua did the same thing with His disciples and at times He gave them a revelation and told them to keep it to themselves and not share it with unbelievers. What we are seeing is that this Torah reading is also on a need-to-know basis. Moses doesn’t receive the ultimate detailed plan of God for the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt. The Lord gives Moses a step-by-step revelation that He needs to share with Pharaoh. The same is true today. There are things that are hinted at in scripture that even the most educated leaders in the church can’t really pinpoint and give you a clear and total outline of what God is going to do in the end time or when and how exactly Yeshua will return. The whole doctrine of the so-called Millennium is a cause of division and argument and sectarian attitudes precisely because the Lord didn’t give us a spelled out, clearly outlined, dated, Power Point presentation of when and how, or of what is going to happen when He returns to judge the world. Anyone today that teaches or says that he knows exactly how and when the Messiah is returning is someone who claims to know more than Yeshua Himself knows. Therefore the only title that I could give such a person would be: False Prophet. “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” – Matthew 24:36 [NKJV] The day will come when we will all know everything that we need to know, but for now, let us learn of the great works that the Lord did in Egypt before releasing the children of Israel from slavery and bringing them to the Land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel as an everlasting inheritance and an eternal possession. The action and the plagues that the Lord brought on Egypt, until the tenth plague of the death of every firstborn in Egypt, man and beast, were done to demonstrate to the idol-worshiping Egyptians that the Lord is God, the one God creator of heaven and Earth. The plagues were progressive and each one of them dealt with another one of the powers most revered and represented by the gods of Egypt. I believe that the pandemic that the world is experiencing is also a demonstration of God’s power to remind us that we, Jews and Christians, along with the whole world, have abandoned the Lord and have chosen modern idols to replace the Lord God of the universe! Maybe it is time for humanity, and especially the Jews and the Christians, to wake up and smell the coffee to realize that we have all gone too far and too deep into the world and have moved far from the almighty God of Israel, our creator and savior. Maybe the best vaccine for this coronavirus is to accept and put on the crown of life that God has provided us all through Yeshua His son and our Savior. This might be the most effective and instant cure for this plague. I fear that our world leaders have already hardened their hearts too much and now the only thing that they can understand is the devastation of their world system, the stock exchange, and businesses, money and power. Like in the days of Amos and Hosea – when the leaders would come out from worshiping God in the Temple (synagogue) and sell the poor people for a pair of shoes. The way Martha Stern put it after the first Succot March in Jerusalem: “What God started in Jerusalem as a move of His Spirit, moved to Europe and became a religion, and moved to America and became a business!” I am waiting for the next chapter of God’s revelation to be expounded and clarified and revealed to all of us children of God. So that we can have a clear roadmap of where our world is going in the next decade or two.
As I am writing this prayer list, I am watching on television the impeachment of President Donald Trump in the American congress. The vengeful attitude and the mean attitude that the American politicians have demonstrated during the last two weeks is just so far beyond me.
The United States of America was created on the basis of biblical faith. The first colonies in the North American recently-created English colony were created as a haven for those who were persecuted in Europe. The Statue of Liberty in the harbor of New York City has the following inscription written by a Sephardic Jewish woman by the name of Emma Lazarus. Her family was a Portuguese Jewish family that ran from Portugal to Germany and from there to Recife, Brazil.
When the Catholic Inquisition came to Brazil and especially to the city of Recife, the Jews ran from Brazil and finally landed in what is today called New York City, Manhattan. Originally these Jews running away from the Catholic Inquisition landed in Manhattan and called it New Amsterdam, only later when the English came and took control, the name was changed to New York.
Emma Lazarus wrote the poem that is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty:
“‘Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!’ cries she
With silent lips. ‘Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’”
When I see the events of the last week in Washington D.C., all that I want to do is to just pray, to pray to the Lord to show His mercy on the United States of America. It seems to me that the United States politicians have lost their way, wandering like a pack of ravaging wolves trying to devour each other and shame each other.
The Bolshevik attitude and deception techniques that are being used by all sides of that equation are not a product of the those who signed the US Constitution or the bill of rights. The lacking love and grace and forgiveness and gentleness of spirit that is displayed by all sides, but especially those who are the winners of the last election is for me only a sign of decline of moral fortitude and the loss of the charity.
It is a sign of decay and selfish ambitions that are produced out of hate and hunger for power and vengeance. Healthy nations need to be cured from such attitudes before they wake up one morning and realize that they have given up their freedom for a hand full of dollars and now each side is standing in the O.K. Coral holding their weapons in their hands but their jeans are fallen down to their knees and they forgot to put on their underwear, both sides are bare-bottom and butt naked.
Pray for the United States, pray for both sides of the political aisle. Pray that the Christians who know God will get up and speak truth with love and try to restore law and order, but also decency and charity and a gracious attitude toward those who have lost the election and toward those who have received the privilege to administer and rule this great nation. Pray that freedom and democracy will be preserved and protected by all sides and that mean and harsh behavior will not be the inheritance that this government leaves for the next generations.
Democracy is a very thin thread made of silk that at the end of this silk thread hangs a gauntlet that easily can lead to tyranny. It has happened before to great nations and it can happen again. Only the almighty God can change the situation and restore sanity and justice and truth to those who want sanity, justice, and truth. Pray pray and pray some more!
We are at home now! All of Israel is in a lockdown. We are both staying at home and working from home. I am recording teachings on the Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry Facebook page almost daily. I am working on my book almost daily and cooking and helping Marcia with some of the house work.
Bathsheba Derbaremdicker, Zvi’s wife, is out of the hospital and recovering at home from her second surgery in one month. Please keep her in your prayers and keep Zvi in your prayers. Zvi is very tense and worried. Keep them both in prayer.
Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra for the elderly saints of Jerusalem.
I am asking you to pray for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation. What makes this kindergarten different from all others in Jerusalem is that it has Jewish and Arab and Christian children together learning co-existence from an early age.
Zacharias Waldner from Canada who is paraplegic has a problem with sores and is asking for our prayers. Please add Zacharias to your prayer list.
We keep praying for a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen, who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim (the “coerced ones”, descendants of 15th century Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who continued to secretly practice their Judaism - getting the State of Israel to accept them as Jews under the Law of Return has been an issue) and their plight…

Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.
Pray for Marcia, tomorrow (Thursday) she will get the first vaccination injection for the coronavirus. Because Marcia has allergies to penicillin and some other things it is a bit dangerous to get the vaccine. Please keep Marcia and I in your prayers.
1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.
2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the body of the Messiah.
3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the Kingdom and in the Heavens attention is paid by the authorities of Goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.
a. Pray for the former board members of KIBI and that those who need to repent and restore their relationship receive power from on high to do so.
b. Pray for those members and academics that are and were a part of the Israel Forum.
c. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel.
Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her situation as does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing. Our sister from Jerusalem, Hadassah, had her surgery for cancer and is now at home recovering. Please keep her in your prayers.
We are praying for a three-year-old little girl who is ill with a rare illness and cancer. She lives with her family in California and we need to pray for her and her family to receive attention and healing from the Lord and to be allowed to grow up to serve His kingdom.
I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer.
Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Brazil. Brazil is one of the countries with a remarkably high count of sick and dead people from the coronavirus. We have brothers and sisters all around Brazil, and I ask you to just say a prayer for divine protection and for wisdom to keep them clear from this deadly plague. Also include in your prayers Caique de Oliveira Becker. These are people in Brazil who need the Lord’s special grace for healing. Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil.

Keep Ruby Little in your prayers, our dear sister from Oklahoma City, who is also battling against cancer and add to your prayers Allison Howard Williams. Allison is the daughter of one of my incredibly special teachers and friends, Dr. George Howard. Allison is also battling cancer.
Please keep praying for Samuel Lopes, a 17-year-old boy who is going through an extremely hard time. His father and mother are extremely upset that He is not walking with the Lord and I heard from his father he has joined with friends who are far from the paths of righteousness.
Please pray for the family of brother Joseph Kelber and especially for his son. Pray for Rachael and Daniel, a brother and sister who need jobs and emotional healing. Lift these brothers and sisters in your prayers: Angela Isby, Aries Franklin Mayers Sr., and Tony Black. I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is in the hospital and his condition is particularly challenging. Please join us in lifting Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias in your prayers.
Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.
Please add to your prayers the family of Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy their son. I believe that this is a good thing for us to pray for friends and acquaintances who are Muslims. It is an act of love and reconciliation to carry before the throne of mercy those dear people who are seeking peace and righteousness looking toward the Lord for mercy and healing.

By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.
You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:
1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.
2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.
3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.
4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Ahuva. Please pray for a dear brother who is well into his 90’s and lost his wife a couple of weeks ago. His name is Dov H. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
Businesses are closing, and bankruptcy is happening to old established companies and businesses and even our national airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. People do not have money to put food on their tables. The number of people in need of basic food is growing.
Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage: www.netivyah.org and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

I was asked by brothers and sisters of the Messianic congregation, Shoresh David (The Root of David) in Portland, Oregon, to pray for Portland. Anarchist elements have taken the center of Portland, OR, and turned it into chaos, and disorder. So, please pray for Portland, OR, and for our brothers and sisters in that city.
The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.
Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.
Third please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.
The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.
This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the Coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months.
We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families…
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children.
