창세기를 읽는 것은 언제나 경이롭고 도전이 되는 경험입니다. 제가 하나님의 말씀의 어느 부분이든지 읽을 때마다, 저는 도전을 받고 언제나 뭔가 새로운 것을 배웁니다.
그런데 창세기가 저의 깨달음의 총합이 되는 이유는, “성경 이야기”로 어린이들에게 흥미를 일으키기 위해 교회에서 보통 사용되는 모든 이야기가 도전적인 사실들로 가득하기 때문입니다. 사실, 저는 이러한 이야기들이 주일학교에서 어린이들을 가르치는 데에는 사용되는데, 성인 성경공부에서는 사용되지 않는 점에 놀랍니다. 이번 주는 이런 토라 포션 중 하나인 “바예라”, 창세기 18:1~22:24를 읽습니다. 하프타라는 열왕기하 4:1-37, 신약성경에서는 누가복음 1:26-38, 24:36-53을 읽습니다. 파라샤(토라 포션)의 이름을 따오는 첫 문구는 “바예라”라는 단어로 시작합니다. 바예라는 번역하면 “나타났다”라는 뜻입니다: “여호와께서 마므레의 상수리나무들이 있는 곳에서 아브라함에게 나타나시니라 날이 뜨거울 때에 그가 장막 문에 앉아 있다가” — 창세기 18:1 이 장은 제가 앞에 쓴 것의 좋은 예입니다. 아브라함은 마므레 상수리나무들 곁에 그의 진영과 함께 있는데요, 이 진영은 20세에서 50세 사이의, 전쟁에서 훈련된 최소 318명의 장정이 있는 아주 큰 진영이었습니다. 낯선 세 사람이 아브라함의 진영에 나타났습니다. 이 객들은 완전히 낯선 사람들이었습니다. 아브라함은 그들을 전혀 모릅니다. 그는 전형적인 중동식 환대로 그들을 맞았습니다. 본문은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다: “… 그가 그들을 보자 곧 장막 문에서 달려나가 영접하며 몸을 땅에 굽혀 이르되 내 주여 내가 주께 은혜를 입었사오면 원하건대 종을 떠나 지나가지 마시옵고 물을 조금 가져오게 하사 당신들의 발을 씻으시고 나무 아래에서 쉬소서 내가 떡을 조금 가져오리니 당신들의 마음을 상쾌하게 하신 후에 지나가소서 당신들이 종에게 오셨음이니이다 …” — 창세기 18:2-5 이 본문에 대한 저의 첫 반응은 아브라함은 21세기 전형적인 이스라엘인은 아니라는 것이었습니다. 아브라함이 오늘날 네게브 북쪽의 천막에 살고 있는 전형적인 이스라엘인이라면, 그는 총을 꺼내 들고 그들에게 가라고 말했을 겁니다. 손에 총을 들고, 정중하지만 분명히 적대적인 목소리로 그들에게 가라고 했을 겁니다. 오늘날 네게브 광야에서는 폭력이 매우 난무하고 손 쓸 수 없을 정도여서 이스라엘 경찰조차 그리고 다른 모든 이들도 낯선 사람이 브엘셰바나 네게브 북쪽 마을 주위에서 어슬렁거리면 불편해합니다. 그런데 우리가 읽고 있는 본문으로 다시 돌아가면 … 아브라함은 몸을 굽혀 남다른 겸손함으로 이 세 낯선 사람들을 맞으며 이렇게 말합니다: “이르되 내 주여 내가 주께 은혜를 입었사오면 … 물을 조금 가져오게 하사 당신들의 발을 씻으시고 나무 아래에서 쉬소서” — 창세기 18:3,4 제가 어릴 때 저는 저희 아버지와 함께 네게브 광야 북쪽으로 (저희 아버지가 함께 사업을 하기 위해) 셰이크 솔레만을 만나러 가는 경험을 할 특권을 누렸습니다. 셰이크 솔레만은 이스라엘 전역에 있는 베두윈 아랍인들의 셰이크들 중에서 가장 중요한 셰이크 중 한 명이었습니다. 그는 저희 아버지를 저녁식사 손님이 아니라, 이스라엘 정부가 보낸 사람같이 맞았습니다. 그렇습니다, 저희가 도착하고 몇 분 안 되어 커피를 대접받았고, 몇 시간 지나고나서 식사 대접을 받았는데요, 견과를 주위에 두르고 산처럼 쌓은 밥 위에 새끼 양을 통째로 올린 것이었습니다. 다시 아브라함 이야기로 돌아가서, 제게 중요한 교훈은 아브라함과 사라가 직접 손님을 대접했고, 그들이 직접 완전히 낯선 이 세 사람을 영접했다는 것입니다. 이 때문에 히브리서에서 이렇게 말하고 있는 것입니다: “형제 사랑하기를 계속하고 손님 대접하기를 잊지 말라 이로써 부지중에 천사들을 대접한 이들이 있었느니라” — 히브리서 13:1,2 히브리서 저자는 이번 주 토라 포션을 가리키며 손님 대접을 격려하고 있는 것이 분명합니다. 사실, 손님을 잘 대접하는 것은 교회의 장로가 될 수 있는 자질 중 하나입니다. “그러므로 감독은 책망할 것이 없으며 한 아내의 남편이 되며 절제하며 신중하며 단정하며 나그네를 대접하며 가르치기를 잘하며” — 디모데전서 3:2 “오직 나그네를 대접하며 선행을 좋아하며 신중하며 의로우며 거룩하며 절제하며” — 디도서 1:8 “서로 대접하기를 원망 없이 하고” — 베드로전서 4:9 위의 디모데전서 3장 말씀과 디도서 1장 말씀은 누구든 주님의 교회의 장로/감독이 되고자 하는 사람의 자질을 말하고 있는 구절입니다. 요즘 이것이 중요한 이유는 전 세계 예슈아의 제자들의 몸을 압도해버린 현대 서구 문화 때문입니다. 손님 대접은 제가 열여섯 살 때 믿음을 가지면서 집에서 쫓겨나 노숙자가 되었던 1960년대 초만큼 일반적이지 않고 아주 희귀하게 되었습니다. 저는 정직하게 1960년대 초 주님 안에서 제 형제자매들은 손님을 잘 대접하는 것 이상이었다고 말할 수 있습니다. 사실, 저는 예슈아를 믿지 않는 유대인들, 그냥 보통 정통유대교 유대인들조차 대단히 친절하고 저를 잘 대우해 주었음을 증언할 수 있습니다. 제가 미국에서 처음으로 갖게 된 양복은 켄터키 주 남부에 사시던 귀한 감리교도 자매님이 사주신 것이었습니다. 두 번째 양복은 테네시 주 쿡빌에서 옷감과 양모 장사를 하던 유대인 종교인 두 형제가 사준 것이었습니다. 저는 그들에게 기분이 상할 정도로 알리야(이스라엘로 귀환)하라고 도전을 했는데, 저의 전형적인 이스라엘인 후쯔바(대범, 건방짐)에 대한 반응으로 그들은 저를 그 도시 백화점으로 데려가 저의 첫 겨울 양복을 사준 것입니다. 저는 유대인과 아랍인을 주님께 인도하고 싶은 사람에게 무엇보다 중요한 자질 중 하나가 손님을 잘 대접하는 것이라고 말할 것입니다. 이제 아브라함의 손님 대접은 넘어가고 이번 주 토라 포션의 신학적 측면으로 가겠습니다. 아브라함은 이 세 손님 중 한 분이 바로 주님(여호와 하나님)이시라는 것을 인식하지 못했습니다. 이것은 개인적으로 저에게나 대부분의 유대인 토라 주석가들에게 큰 도전 중 하나입니다. 그냥 그대로 받아들이고 문제를 무시하십시오. 그리고 본질적으로 하나님(여호와)께서 친히 육신을 입고 내려오셔서 그분의 발을 씻기도록 허락하시고 버터와 고기를 드셨고, 아브라함과 얘기를 나누시고, 소돔을 멸하시려는 계획을 아브라함에게 알리셨을 때 아브라함이 하나님의 도덕성을 도전하는 것도 허락하셨다는 것을 동의하고 긍정하십시오. 아브라함은 다음과 같은 말로 주님께 도전했습니다: “아브라함이 가까이 나아가 이르되 주께서 의인을 악인과 함께 멸하려 하시나이까” — 창세기 18:23 제가 감히 아브라함이 주님께 한 이 말을 번역하자면: “제 정신이세요? 무고하고 괜찮은 형제들을 저 사악한 녀석들하고 같이 죽이신다고요?”일 것입니다. 귀한 형제자매님들, 가장 경이로운 점은 아브라함이 주님 앞에 내놓았던 도전을 하나님께서 받아들이시어, 소돔을 향한 그분의 작전을 수정하시고, 아브라함의 의로운 이의 제기를 들으시고자 하셨다는 것입니다. 그런데, 아브라함이 소돔에 대해서는 하나님과 논쟁했는데, 그의 아들 이삭을 제물로 바치는 것에 대해서는 하나님과 논쟁하지 않은 것, 즉 그의 아들 이삭을 구하기 위해 싸우지 않고 그냥 하나님의 명령대로 한 것 때문에, 랍비들은 하나님께서 창세기 22장 이후에는 아브라함을 그냥 완전히 무시하셨다고 생각합니다. 아브라함은 너무 순종적이고, 너무 순응적이고, 너무 독실하게 지시를 따라 그의 약속의 아들 이삭을 제단에 묶고, 그의 칼을 치켜들어, 막 하나님의 명령을 이행하려 했습니다. 그렇습니다, 하나님께서 양을 보내주셔서 이삭을 구하셨습니다. 그러나 아브라함은 하나님을 믿는 맹목적인 믿음이 있었고, 소돔의 경우와는 달리 그저 하나님의 명령을 맹목적으로 순종적으로 받아들였습니다. 하나님께서는 그냥 창세기 22장부터 아브라함이 죽을 때까지 아브라함과의 대화를 중단하셨습니다. 저는 랍비들이 하나님께서 이삭의 희생제사 이후 아브라함과의 대화를 중단하신 이유로 이렇게 생각하고 있다는 것을 압니다. 그런데 이것은 아브라함과 온 우주의 주인이신 주님 사이의 대화가 그냥 중단된 것에 대한 흥미로운 관찰입니다. 우리가 이 토라 포션에서 배울 수 있는 것은: 첫째, 하나님께서 육신을 입고 발을 씻기고 음식을 먹어야 하는 보통의 사람으로 나타나실 수 있다는 것입니다. 둘째, 하나님께서는 그분의 의로운 종들을 고려하시며, 개인적으로 그들에게 그리고 성도들의 공동체에 영향을 미칠 그분의 계획을 그들과 나누신다는 것입니다. 셋째, 하나님께서는 그분의 의로운 종을 아시고 때로는 그들의 말을 들으시고 그들의 말을 진지하게 받아들이신다는 것입니다. 때때로 하나님께서는 실제로 그분의 작전을 수정하십니다. 이런 일은 모세하고 시내 광야에서 두 번 있었고, 엘리야와 레바논에서 온 과부하고도 있었고, 아브라함하고는 이번이었습니다. 우리가 이 이야기에서 배우고 알아야 하는 일은 예슈아의 생명과 희생에서 비롯된 의를 얻은 하나님의 자녀인 우리도 하나님과 이야기하며, 존경의 태도로 그분과 논쟁할 수 있다는 것, 그래도 결국에는 그분의 현명한 판단을 받아들여야 한다는 것입니다. 이것은 메시아닉 유대인과 일부 기독교인들이 전능하신 분께 기도하고, 요청하고, 그분의 피조물과 그분의 자녀인 우리 자신과 하늘에 계신 아버지와의 사이에 의미 있는 대화를 하는 방식을 크게 바꾸어야 함을 의미합니다. 넷째, 믿음과 신실함은 아주 중요하다는 것입니다. 아브라함은 그의 아들을 제물로 바치러 모리아산에 데리고 올라갔을 때 이것을 증명했습니다. 그런데 때때로 우리의 이성을 사용하지 않고 그러려고 생각하지도 않으면서 견지하며 행하는 맹목적인 믿음은 이스라엘의 전능하신 하나님이나 그분의 아들 예슈아께서 알아주시거나 받으시지 않을지도 모릅니다. 우리는 우리가 뭘 하고 있는지 왜 그 일을 하고 있는지 충분히 알고 주의를 기울이며 그 일을 할 때에만 우리 행동과 믿음에 신실합니다. 하나님께서는 로봇이 필요하지도 원하지도 않으십니다. 그분께서는 충분히 생각하고 이성적이고 목적이 있는 결정을 할 줄 아는 자녀를 원하십니다. 마지막으로, 아브라함이 이삭을 제물로 바치는 일과 관련된 사건들은 현대 틱톡 세대 … 에게 나누거나 설명하기에는 더 복잡한 일입니다. 제가 발견한 이 사건을 나누는 방법은 슈퍼맨이나 스파이더맨이나 다른 할리우드 신화 같은 슈퍼 히어로 이야기를 통해서입니다. 우리 개인과 우리 가족이 신경 쓰고 심지어 우리 자신을 희생해야 할 것은, 이 세상과 인류의 유구한 선입니다. 저 개인에게는 이것이 결코 종교의 문제가 아니라, 우리의 권한에 있는 모든 것을 더 크신 하나님께 맡기는 문제입니다. 유명한 랍비 문헌 미쉬나 아보트 주석의 문구에 이런 문구가 있습니다: “힐렐은 이렇게 말하곤 했다: (1) ‘내가 나를 위한 것이 아니라면, 누가 나를 위한 것인가? (2) 그리고 내가 나를 위한 것일 때는 나는 무엇인가? (3) 그리고 지금이 아니라면, 언제인가?’” — 아보트 주석 1:14 힐렐의 말 이면에 있는 생각은 우리가 이기적으로 우리 자신만을 위해 산다면 우리 삶은 아무 의미가 없다는 것입니다. 물론, 우리는 우리 자신과 우리에게 속한 이들을 돌봐야 합니다. 그러나 그것이 우리 삶에서 헌신하는 전부라면, 우리는 인간으로서, 하나님의 자녀로서, 아브라함의 자녀로서 무슨 차이가 있습니까? 우리는 짐승과 다를 바 없을 것이고, 대부분의 짐승이 우리 인간보다 더 나을 것입니다. 짐승은 먹고 생존하기 위해, 혹은 스스로를 방어하기 위해 살육합니다. 그러나 우리 인간은 돈, 시기, 미움, 쾌락 등등을 위해 살육합니다. (우리는 모호한 “쾌락”을 위해 짐승을 사냥하고 사냥 허가를 받기 위해 큰 돈을 지불합니다.) 우리 조상 아브라함은 전능하신 하나님께 대한 믿음과 순종의 최고의 모범이 되었습니다. 그리고 궁극적인 하나님의 약속의 아들을 그분께 기꺼이 바치려 했습니다. 그것은 그가 이삭을 바치더라도 그들 둘이 살아서 안전하게 집으로 돌아오리라는 깊은 믿음으로 그렇게 한 것입니다. 아브라함은 나귀를 지키고 있을 종들에게 이렇게 말했습니다: “이에 아브라함이 종들에게 이르되 너희는 나귀와 함께 여기서 기다리라 내가 아이와 함께 저기 가서 예배하고 우리가 너희에게로 돌아오리라 하고” — 창세기 22:5 아브라함이 종들에게 “우리가 너희에게로 돌아오리라”라고 말한 것을 주목하십시오! 하나님의 모든 약속이 그에게 달린 약속의 아들을 제물로 바치라는, 말도 안 되며 터무니없는 명령을 그가 순종하더라도, 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 일으키시어 그분의 약속을 지키실 것을 깨닫고 있는 것입니다. 그러니까, 네, 친애하는 형제자매님들, 우리가 우리 자신과 우리에게 속한 이들만을 생각하며 살면서, 우리 나라와 교회와 회당과 더 큰 가족, 우리 도시 사람들, 우리 나라의 지도자들에 대해 마음 쓰는 하나님의 마음을 가지지 않고, 최소한 그들을 위해 기도도 하지 않는다면, 우리는 무엇입니까? 우리가 하나님께서 우리를 구속하시고 우리에게 질병이나 죽음이나 고통이나 미움이 없는 영원을 선물하시리라 믿으면서, 여기 하나님의 선한 지구에서는 우리 자신과 우리 가족만을 신경 쓴다면, 우리는 어떤 종류의 인간 짐승일까요? “내가 나를 위한 것이 아니라면, 누가 나를 위한 것인가? 그리고 내가 나를 위한 것일 때는 나는 무엇인가? 그리고 지금이 아니라면, 언제인가?” — 아보트 주석 1:14 하나님께서 우리에게 하나님의 말씀 본문을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있는 눈을 주시며, 더 더욱 하나님의 살아계신 말씀이신, 말씀이 육신이 되신 메시아 예슈아를 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있게 하소서.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – November 10, 2022

Reading the book of Genesis is always a wonderful and a challenging experience. Every time that I read any part of the Word of God I am challenged, and I always learn something new.
But, Genesis is the sum total of my enlightenment, because every one of the stories that are normally used in churches to entertain the children with “Bible stories” is so full of challenging facts. In fact, I am surprised that these stories are used to teach children in Sunday school, and oftentimes not used to teach the adult Bible studies. This week is one of these Torah readings, the portion of Vayera, Genesis 18:1-22:24, and the Haftarah reading is from 2 Kings 4:1-37. And from the New Testament the reading that we read is from Luke 26:38, 24:36-53. The opening statement after which the name of the parasha is taken starts with the word “Vayera”. Vayera is translated into English as “appeared”: “Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.” — Genesis 18:1 [NKJV] This chapter is a good example of what I wrote earlier. There is Abraham by the oaks of Mamre with his camp, a very large camp with at least 318 men who are trained in war, and are between the age of 20 to 50 years old. Three strangers appear in Abraham’s camp. These guests are total strangers. He doesn’t know them at all. He welcomes them and with typical Middle Eastern hospitality. This is what the text says: “…he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, and said, ‘My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.’” — Genesis 18:3-5 My first reaction to this text is that Abraham was not a typical Israeli from the 21st Century. If Abraham was a typical Israeli living in tents in the northern Negev today, he would pull out his gun and tell them to go away, and in a polite but clearly hostile voice ask them to leave, gun in hand. Today the violence in the Negev desert is so rampant and so out of hand that even the Israeli police and everyone else are uncomfortable with any strangers running around the neighborhoods of the city of Beersheba and the other towns of the northern Negev. But, back to our text… Abraham with such untypical humility welcomes these three strangers by humbling himself with the words: “If I have now found favor in Your sight… Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.” — Genesis 18:3,4 As a child I had the privilege of going with my father to the northern Negev desert to visit (for my father to do business with) Sheik Soleman of the Negev. Sheik Soleman was one of the most important sheiks of the Bedouin Arabs in the whole land of Israel. He welcomed my father, not like a supper guest, but like an emissary of the Israeli government. Yes, there was coffee served within a few minutes of our arrival, and food was served after a few hours — a whole baby lamb served over a mountain of rice laced with nuts. Back to Abraham. The important lesson for me was that Abraham and Sarah themselves did the service, and they themselves welcomed these three total strangers. This is why the book of Hebrew says: “Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” — Hebrews 13:1,2 [NKJV] It is clear that the writer of the book of Hebrews is referring to our portion of the Torah and encouraging hospitality. In fact, being hospitable is one of the qualifications of being an elder in the church. “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach…” — 1 Timothy 3:2 “…but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled…” — Titus 1:8 “Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.” — 1 Peter 4:9 The texts from 1 Timothy 3 and from Titus 1 are from the qualifications for anyone who wants to be an elder/bishop in the Lord’s church. This is important nowadays because of the modern western culture that has overtaken the body of disciples of Yeshua worldwide. Hospitality is at a premium and not as common as it was in the early 1960’s when I was a young 16-year-old homeless believer. I can honestly say that my brothers and sisters in the Lord in the early 1960’s were more than hospitable. In fact, I can witness to the fact that even Jewish people who were not believers in Yeshua, just regular Orthodox Jews, were super-friendly and hospitable to me. The first suit of clothing that I had in the USA was purchased by a dear Methodist sister who lived in southern Kentucky. The second suit that was for winter was purchased for me by two Jewish religious brothers who ran a rag and wool business in Cookeville, Tennessee. I managed to offend them and challenged them to make Aliyah (immigration to Israel), and in response to my typical Israeli hutzpah they took me to the local department store and bought me my first winter suit. I would say that hospitality is one of the more important qualifications for someone who wants to lead Jews and Arabs to the Lord. Let me pass the hospitality of Abraham and get to the theological side of our Torah portion. Abraham didn’t recognize the fact that one of his three guests is the Lord Himself. This is a major challenge, for me personally and for most of the Jewish commentators of the Torah. Just accept it and ignore the problem, and essentially agree and confirm that God (Jehovah) Himself came down in the flesh and had His feet washed and ate butter and meat, and talked to Abraham, and allowed Abraham to challenge God’s morality when God revealed to Abraham His plan to destroy Sodom. Abraham challenged the Lord Himself with the following words: “Abraham came forward and said, ‘Will You sweep away the innocent along with the guilty?’” — Genesis 18:23 If I would dare to translate the words of Abraham to the Lord Himself: “Are you crazy man? You are going to kill the innocent, the cool brothers, with those bad bad dudes?” The most wonderful thing, dear brothers and sisters, is that the challenge that Abraham put before the Lord was accepted by God, and God modified His action toward Sodom, and was willing to hear Abraham’s righteous challenge. But, because Abraham argued with God about Sodom, but didn’t argue with God concerning the sacrifice of his son Isaac, but just went on with God’s command without putting up a fight to save his son Isaac, the rabbis think that God just ignored Abraham completely after Genesis 22. Abraham was too obedient, too compliant, too religious, and just followed instruction and took his son of promise Isaac, tied him on the altar, and lifted up his knife, ready to carry out God’s command. Yes, God sent the ram and saved Isaac, but Abraham had this blind, trusting faith in God, and unlike in the situation with Sodom, he just took God’s command blind and obedient. God just stopped communication with Abraham from chapter 22, until Abraham’s death. I realize that this is a rabbinical idea of why God stopped His communication with Abraham after the sacrifice of Isaac, but it is an interesting observation that communication between Abraham and the Lord, the Master of the Universe, just stopped. What can we learn from this Torah portion: First, God can put on flesh and appear without doubt as a normal man, who needs to have his feet washed and take food. Second, God takes into consideration His righteous servants and shares with them His plans, the plans that would affect them personally and affect the community of the saints. Third, God appreciates and sometimes even hears (listens) to His righteous servants, and takes their comments seriously. At times God actually modifies His actions. This happened twice with Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, and it happened with Elijah and the widow from Lebanon, and it happened in this case with Abraham. What we need to learn and appropriate from this story is that we, too, as children of God who have the acquired righteousness that comes from Yeshua’s life and sacrifice, can and ought to be able to talk to God and argue with Him respectfully, but in the end accept and receive His wise judgment. This ought to change drastically the way Messianic Jews, and some Christians, pray, and make our prayers and our requests from the Almighty a meaningful conversation and an honest dialogue between ourselves, His creatures, His children, and our Heavenly Father. Fourth, faith and faithfulness are of great importance, and Abraham proved this when he took his son Isaac up to Mount Moriah to sacrifice him. But, blind faith that is held and sometimes performed without the use of our minds and without thinking it through and without consideration for others around us, might not be appreciated and accepted by the Almighty God of Israel or by His Son, Yeshua. We are only faithful in our actions and faith when we do things mindfully with full awareness of what we are doing and why we are doing it. God doesn’t need or want robots, He wants children who are able to think things through and make relational and purposeful decisions. Finally, the events around Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac are some of the more complicated to share and explain to the current TikTok generation… The way that I have discovered to share this event is through the stories of the superheroes, like Superman and Spider-Man, and the rest of the Hollywood myths. The long-term good of the world and the human race is something that we, as individuals and our families, ought to care about and even sacrifice ourselves for. For me personally it is not a question of religion at all, it is a question of being committed to do all that is in our power for the greater God. The famous rabbinical statement from the Tractate Avot in the Mishnah is translated to English like this: “Hillel used to say: (1) ‘If I am not for myself, who is for me? (2) And when I am for myself, what am I? (3) And if not now, when?’” — Tractate Avot 1:14 The idea behind Hillel’s statement is that our life means nothing if we are selfish and live only for ourselves. Yes, we ought to take care of ourselves and our own, first and foremost, but if that is all that we are going to contribute in our lives, then what is the difference between us, as human beings, as children of God, as children of Abraham? We would be no better than an animal, and most of the animals would be better than us as human beings. Animals kill to eat and survive or to defend themselves, but we as human beings kill for money, jealousy, hate, pleasure (we hunt animals and pay much money for licenses for this dubious “pleasure”)… Our father Abraham becomes the supreme example of faith and obedience to the Almighty God. And the ultimate sacrifice of the son of God’s promise to him, he was willing to offer, with a deep faith that even if he offered Isaac they would return home alive and safe. This is what Abraham said to his servants who were keeping the donkeys: “And Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.’” — Genesis 22:5 [NKJV] Notice that Abraham said to his servants: “and we will come back to you!” Realizing that even if he obeyed God with this impossible and outrageous command to sacrifice the one son of promise on whose shoulders all the promises of God depend, God would raise him back from the dead and keep His promises. So, yes, dear brothers and sisters, if we live only thinking of ourselves and ours, and don’t have the heart of God to care and at least pray for our nations, and churches, and synagogues, and the larger family, and just the people of our cities, and the leadership of our countries, what are we? What kind of human animals would we be if we trusted God to redeem us and present us with an eternity where there is no illness or death, suffering, or hate, and then turn around here on God’s good earth and care only for ourselves and our families? “If I am not for myself, who is for me? And when I am for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” — Tractate Avot 1:14 God give us the eyes to see through His Word in the text of the Bible, but much more through His living Word, Yeshua the Messiah, who became the Word of God in the flesh.

Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
My dear wife is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. She was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems.
Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin. We are praying for someone to live with us and help us with caring for Marcia.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

Please pray for Alexander West and his sister Sarah West. Alexander has a very serious case of Covid, and he has asked for prayer. This is a good thing, since Alexander has been estranged form the faith for a season. Pray also for Ronan, Alexander’s wife, who also has a challenging case of Covid.

Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:
“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, And there shall be holiness; The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau, For the Lord has spoken. The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead. And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South. Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” — Obadiah 1:17-21 [NKJV]
Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.
Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who is seriously needing our prayers for sanity and mental health.
Pray for our dear brother Marcelo G. and his family. Marcelo is a pioneer in the establishing the Teaching from Zion ministry in Brazil and the Har Zion Congregation in Belo-Horizonte.
Pray for Marcelo’s father who is up in the years. Pray for our brothers in the Har Zion congregation, the widow of Pastor George, and for those who are ill and need healing.
Pray for Livia Schnell Nothen, she has some issues with her physical health and a growth in her adrenal gland. And other health issues.
Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker, who is suffering from back problems. Aratuza de Oliveira his wife. Pray for this 3-year-old child that has serious problems with his eyes and ask the Lord to give healing to his eyes. This child’s name is Caique de Oliveira Becker.
Pray for Bernardo Antonio Nothen Becker. Bernardo is addicted to gambling and playing poker. This caused deep sorrow to his family.
Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn into joy and friendship.

In India, Pastor Isaac, from Chennai, needs our prayers. Pastor Isaac is suffering from kidney problems and has to have dialysis several times per week.
Tony Tam and his wife Luisa and son Marco need special prayer for their situation.

Please pray for Ruby K. from Hong Kong. Ruby has gone through a very complicated surgery for multiple cancers in her body. The surgery was very long, and Ruby is back home now recovering. Please lift Ruby K. and ask the Lord to heal and deliver Ruby from Hong Kong.

Please pray for the daughter of Bill Colwell, who is very sick with cancer.
Please pray for my family in the United States: Barry my son and his wife Beth, and for Joey my grandson. Pray for their divine protection and health.
Pray for Danah my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom and peace and calm in life and in her work.
Pray for Noaam my granddaughter. She is working two jobs now and needs good health and wisdom to make the right choices and plans for life, education, immigration to Israel, and just general protection from all harm.
Pray for David Young the preacher in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who is back to preaching after recovering from medical issues. Please keep David in your prayers.
Pray for Ruby Little, our dear and faithful sister who has cancer and has stopped receiving medical treatment for the cancer that she has. Please pray for Ruby that the Lord will heal and strengthen her and provide for all her needs both medically and socially.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past issues of life. Pray for Don, Aaron’s father and Nancy’s husband. Don and Nancy are now in the USA. Keep Nancy in your prayers.
Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel. Pray for these very important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
Pray a blessing for a dear sister Angela Isby and her situation. Pray for Tiz H. and Lion H.
Also pray for Ilana Avramov who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana has fallen and in now in rehab learning how to walk again. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.
I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
Please pray for Netivyah and for the good work that Netivyah is doing in Israel and around the world.
We need more workers because of the challenges and needs and opportunities to bless the King Yeshua and His Kingdom down here on Earth and bless the poor people of Jerusalem and produce more materials, books, and magazines.
