몇 년에 한 번씩 유월절이나 오순절 이후 몇 주 동안 이스라엘에서는, 세계의 다른 곳보다 한 토라 포션을 앞서 갑니다.
이번 주 토라 포션은 “드바림”인데요, 여러분은 여기에서 이것에 대해 배우실 수 있을 것입니다.
신명기의 히브리어 이름은 “드바림”입니다. 신명기는 이렇게 시작합니다, “이는 모세가 요단 저쪽 숩 맞은편의 아라바 광야 …에서 이스라엘 무리에게 선포한 말씀이니라.” 구약성경 각 책의 히브리어 이름은 모두 “처음 시작하는 단어들”입니다. 출애굽기는 다른 언어의 성경에서는 출애굽기라고 부르지만, 히브리어 이름은 “이름들”인데요, 애굽으로 내려온 야곱의 아들들의 “이름들”로 시작하기 때문입니다. 신명기는 사실 이 책의 내용을 말하는 실질적 이름입니다. 신명기(Deuteronomy)라는 이름은 헬라어의 “신(Deuteron) = 두 번째/다시”, “명(Nomos) = 율법/명령”이라는 두 단어에서 온 것으로, “율법을 다시 준다”는 의미입니다. 사실, 이것이 신명기 대부분의 내용입니다. 모세가 요단강 동편에 진을 치고 있는 이스라엘 백성에게 한 그의 마지막 담화는 그 해 봄(이 때는 출애굽 이후 처음으로 유월절을 지키는 니산월 14일이 되기 얼마 전이었습니다), 요단강 계곡 야외에 서서 약 세 시간짜리 연설을 하고 있는 것입니다. 저는 날씨가 덥고 에어컨도 없고 푹신한 극장 의자도 없이 모세가 연설하며 출애굽기, 레위기, 민수기에서 율법을 주었던 것처럼 율법을 다시 정리해 주는데, 하나님께서 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 영원한 기업으로 주신 그 땅에 자기 집과 밭과 재산으로 정착하는 민족에게 적합한 율법으로 다시 정리해 주고 있는 장면을 상상해 봅니다. 이번 안식일에 우리는 신명기 1:1~3:22와, 선지서에서는 이사야 1:1-27, 신약성경에서는 디모데전서 3:1-7을 읽습니다. 읽는 본문 모두 매우 강력합니다. 제가 우리 시대에 가장 연관성이 있다고 여겨지는 말씀을 골라야 한다면 이사야 1장을 고를 것 같습니다. 이사야 1장은 바울이 사도행전 17장에서 우상을 숭배하는 헬라인들과 관련하여 다룬 것과 같은 이슈를 다루고 있습니다. 종교는 너무 많고 믿음과 도덕과 정의와 의는 너무 적은 이 문제는 호세아, 아모스, 학개 등의 선지자들과 마찬가지로 이사야서 1장에서도 다루고 있는 문제입니다. 그러나 우리가 신명기를 이제 막 읽기 시작했기 때문에, 저는 최소한 생애 마지막 장에 있는 모세와, 가나안 땅에 영구히 정주하게 될 이스라엘 지파들에게 더 적합하도록 토라의 체제와 강조점을 다시 정리하는 내용을 조금이라도 다루어야 할 것 같습니다. 모세와 이스라엘 자손이 시내 광야에서 40년 동안 광야를 방랑하는 동안, 하나님의 성막은 진영 중앙에 있었습니다. 모든 지파와 각 지파의 가족들은 하나님의 성막에 쉽게 접근할 수 있었고, 누구든 하나님의 임재를 낮에는 구름으로, 밤에는 불기둥으로 볼 수 있었습니다. 이제 약속의 땅 가나안에서 지파들이 단에서부터 브엘세바와 그 너머까지 온 땅에 흩어질 것입니다. 더 많은 역할을 하는 제사장이 필요할 것이므로, 모세의 형 아론의 가문이 아닌 모든 레위 사람이 자신의 성읍이나 마을에서 제사장이 될 수 있게 되고, 일 년에 한 번 자기 차례에 예루살렘에서 일주일 동안 지내게 되었습니다. 성전은 예루살렘에 하나 있기 때문에, 먼 곳에서 오는 사람들은 고기를 먹으려면 제단에 드린 후에야 먹을 수 있는데 그때까지 기다릴 수가 없습니다. 그래서 모든 촌락의 모든 레위인은 정결한 동물을 정결하게 도살할 수 있게 되었고, 갈릴리나 네게브에서 그 촌락이나 마을 사람들은 예루살렘으로 가지 않고도 고기를 먹을 수 있게 되었습니다. 여기에 모세를 고민하게 하는 문제가 있습니다. 그는 토라와 그 땅에 정착하는 진짜 무거운 문제에 도달하기 전에, 고민하는 그 문제를 마음에서 떨쳐버려야 했습니다. 1. 권력 분담, “나는 혼자서 너희를 담당할 수가 없다!” 모세는 자신이 백성의 유일한 지도자이자 최고 지도자인 것이 너무 큰 짐이라는 것을 이해하고 있으며, 이스라엘 백성에게 백성의 지도자직과 행정을 분담하는 것이 선하고 지혜로운 일이라고 설명합니다: “그런즉 나 홀로 어찌 능히 너희의 괴로운 일과 너희의 힘겨운 일과 너희의 다투는 일을 담당할 수 있으랴 너희의 각 지파에서 지혜와 지식이 있는 인정 받는 자들을 택하라 내가 그들을 세워 너희 수령을 삼으리라 한즉 너희가 내게 대답하여 이르기를 당신의 말씀대로 하는 것이 좋다 하기에” (신명기 1:12-14) 2. 모세는 표준화되고 조직화되어야 하는 법 체계에 대해 걱정하고 있습니다. 그는 40년 동안 이스라엘 진영에서 유일한 최고 재판장이었습니다. 이제 그는 더 이상 그들을 위해 거기에 있지 않을 것이며 그가 느보산에 올라 죽기 전에 이스라엘 진영에 의를 위한 권위자가 자리를 잡을 필요가 있습니다! “내가 그 때에 너희의 재판장들에게 명하여 이르기를 너희가 너희의 형제 중에서 송사를 들을 때에 쌍방간에 공정히 판결할 것이며 그들 중에 있는 타국인에게도 그리 할 것이라 재판은 하나님께 속한 것인즉 너희는 재판할 때에 외모를 보지 말고 귀천을 차별 없이 듣고 사람의 낯을 두려워하지 말 것이며 스스로 결단하기 어려운 일이 있거든 내게로 돌리라 내가 들으리라 하였고 내가 너희의 행할 모든 일을 그 때에 너희에게 다 명령하였느니라.” (신명기 1:16-18) 3. 모세는 이스라엘 백성의 광야에서의 행동과, 그들을 애굽의 고기 솥에서 데리고 나온 것에 대해 모세를 비난하며 한 번 이상 애굽으로 돌아가고자 했던 일에 대해 모두 비판하며, 이제 이스라엘의 지도자에게 말합니다: “네 하나님 여호와께서 네가 하는 모든 일에 네게 복을 주시고 네가 이 큰 광야에 두루 다님을 알고 네 하나님 여호와께서 이 사십 년 동안을 너와 함께 하셨으므로 네게 부족함이 없었느니라.” (신명기 2:7) 저는 모든 성경 인물들로부터, 그들의 승리에서 만큼이나 그들의 문제에서도 배우고 있습니다만, 모세로부터는 배운 바가 많고 계속 배우고 있습니다. 이집트의 종살이에서 나온 오합지졸 한 세대를 이끌어온 그의 지도력은, 어떤 공동체의 지도자든, 목사든, 설교자든, 사제든, 어떤 회사의 CFO든 그들에게 그들이 마땅히 어떻게 행하며 좋은 지도자란 어떤 지도자로 모범이 되어야 하는지, 지도자는 어떻게 위로해주며 격려하는 지도자가 되어야 하며 또한 어떻게 공동체의 잘못과 허물을 지적하는 지도자가 되어야 하는지의 좋은 모범입니다. 저는 모세가 성경 역사상 가장 하나님의 인도를 받은 지도자이며, 주님과 가장 친밀했고, 가장 겸손했고, 이스라엘 백성에 대해 가장 사려 깊었던 사람이라고 믿습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 도덕적으로 타락한 노예, 믿음이 없고, 말다툼하고, 분열되고, 시시하고, 이기적인 욕구를 가지고 애굽을 떠나 홍해를 건넌 민족이었습니다. 광야 경험은 주전 8세기 경 선지자들이 매우 다양한 색채로 묘사했습니다. 이스라엘에게 시내산에서의 토라 수여는 결혼식이었고, 토라는 우리의 케투바(이혼증서)이며 40년 방랑생활은 허니문이었습니다. 예레미야는 그 기간을 이렇게 기술합니다: “가서 예루살렘의 귀에 외칠지니라 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 내가 너를 위하여 네 청년 때의 인애와 네 신혼 때의 사랑을 기억하노니 곧 씨 뿌리지 못하는 땅, 그 광야에서 나를 따랐음이니라 이스라엘은 여호와를 위한 성물 곧 그의 소산 중 첫 열매이니 그를 삼키는 자면 모두 벌을 받아 재앙이 그들에게 닥치리라 여호와의 말씀이니라.” (예레미야 2:2-3) “여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시니라 칼에서 벗어난 백성이 광야에서 은혜를 입었나니 곧 내가 이스라엘로 안식을 얻게 하러 갈 때에라 옛적에 여호와께서 나에게 나타나사 내가 영원한 사랑으로 너를 사랑하기에 인자함으로 너를 이끌었다 하였노라 처녀 이스라엘아 내가 다시 너를 세우리니 네가 세움을 입을 것이요 네가 다시 소고를 들고 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 춤추며 나오리라.” (예레미야 31:2-4) 저는 계속해서 이스라엘 선지자들이 이스라엘에 대한 비판을 완전히 뒤집는 그러한 본문을 더 많이 가져올 수 있을 것입니다. 기독교인들은 그리스도 이후 2세기에서 6세기까지 교부들로부터 물려받은 매우 부정적인 태도를 고침 받기 위해 토라와 선지자들을 처음부터 끝까지 다시 읽어야 합니다. 저는 우리 모두가 이사야서 1장을 처음부터 끝까지 다시 읽을 것을 제안합니다. 그러면 예슈아와 바울의 말씀을 훨씬 더 잘 이해하게 될 것입니다 (행 17:23-31): “또 왼편에 있는 자들에게 이르시되 저주를 받은 자들아 나를 떠나 마귀와 그 사자들을 위하여 예비된 영원한 불에 들어가라 내가 주릴 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주지 아니하였고 목마를 때에 마시게 하지 아니하였고 나그네 되었을 때에 영접하지 아니하였고 헐벗었을 때에 옷 입히지 아니하였고 병들었을 때와 옥에 갇혔을 때에 돌보지 아니하였느니라 하시니” (마태복음 25:41-43)

The Jerusalem Prayer List – August 4, 2022

Every few years for a few weeks following either Passover or Shavuot, in Israel, we are one Torah portion ahead of the rest of the world.
This week’s portion is Devarim, which you will learn about here.
The book of Deuteronomy’s Hebrew name is “Devarim”. This is how the Book starts, “These are the Words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness…”. All the names in the Hebrew Bible are just “the opening words!” Exodus in all other languages but in Hebrew, “The Names” of the Children of Jacob that came down to Egypt.” The name Deuteronomy is an actual name that speaks of the content of the book, Deuteronomy comes from two Greek words, Deuteron = Second, and Nomos = Law i.e. the second giving of the Law. And in fact, this is the content of most of the book of Deuteronomy. Moses in his last address to the people of Israel, encamped on the east side of the Jordan River is giving them about a three-hour lecture standing outside in the Jordan River Valley, in the Spring of the Year (It was not long before the 14 days of the Month of Nissan when they celebrated the first time since they left Egypt). I imagine that it was hot and there was no air-conditioning and no good, padded theater seats, and Moses was talking and reorganizing the Law as it was given in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, and fitting it more for a nation settled securely in their own homes and gardens and property on the Land that God gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as an everlasting inheritance. This Shabbat we will be reading from Deuteronomy 1:1–3:22 , from the prophets Isaiah 1:1-27, and from the New Testament, we will read 1Timothy 3:1-7. All these readings are very powerful and if I had to choose one that I would consider most pertinent for our days and times, I would choose Isaiah chapter 1. Isaiah chapter 1 deals with the same issues that Paul deals with in Acts chapter 17 with the idol-worshiping Greeks. The issue of too much religion and too little faith and morality and justice and righteousness are the issues that Isaiah in chapter 1 is dealing with as also the prophets Hosea, Amos, Haggai…. However, since we are just beginning to read the book of Deuteronomy, I feel compelled to at least deal a little with Moses in the last chapter of his life and the rearrangement of the order and emphasis of the Torah to fit better in the permanent dwellings of the tribes of Israel in the Land of Canaan. During the 40 years of wilderness wandering of Moses and the Children of Israel in the Sinai desert, the Tabernacle of God was in the center of the camp. There was easy access of all the tribes and their families to the Tabernacle of God and each one could see by day the cloud of God’s presence and by night the pillar of fire. Now in the land of Promise, Canaan, the tribes will be spread all through the land from Dan to Beersheba and beyond. There is a need for more functioning priests, so every Levite that is not from the family of Aaron the brother of Moses can be a priest in his own town or village and take his turn for a week in Jerusalem once per year. Because there is one temple in Jerusalem the people from the far corners of the land can’t wait to eat meat only after it was offered on the Altar. So, Every Levite in every village could slaughter a Kosher animal in a Kosher way and the people of the village or town could eat meat without having to go from the Galilee or the Negev to Jerusalem. Here are the issues that bothered Moses, he had to get them off his chest before getting to the real heavy issues of the Torah and the settlement in the land. 1. The sharing of power, “I am alone, and I am not able to bear you!” Moses understands that it is too much of a burden for him to be the only and top leader of the people and he explains to the Israelites that it was good and wise for him to share the leadership and the administration of the people: “How can I alone bear your problems and your burdens and your complaints? 13 Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.’ 14 And you answered me and said, “The thing which you have told us to do is good.״ (Deuteronomy 1:12-14) 2. Moses is worried about the legal system that needed to be standardized and organized. He was the only top judge in the camp of Israel for 40 years. Now he will no longer be there for them and the authority for the righteousness in the Camp of Israel needs to be put in place before his climb to Mount Nebo to die! “Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the stranger who is with him. 17 You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do." (Deuteronomy 1:16-18) 3.With all the criticism that Moses has for the people of Israel’s behavior in the wilderness and their desire to go back to Egypt more than one time and blame Moses for taking them out of the fleshpots of Egypt. Now Moses says to the leader of Israel: “For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.” (Deuteronomy 2:7) I am learning from all the Biblical characters, from their victories and their problems alike, but I have and am continuing to learn from Moses and his leadership of the rabble that came out of Slavery in Egypt and was granted in one generation is a totally great example of what a leader, a pastor, preacher, priest, or just CFO of any community or company ought to do and be an example of what a good leader and how a leader ought to be both a comforting and encouraging leader and also a leader who can point out the wrong things and the weakness of the community. I believe that Moses is the ultimate divinely led leader in the history of the Bible and one that was most intimate with the LORD and most humble and considerate of the people of Israel. The Israelites left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea as a nation of morally broken slaves, faithless, squabbling, and divided triable and selfish aspirations. The wilderness experience is described in very different colors by the 8th Century B.C. prophets. For Israel the giving of the Torah in Mount Sinai was the wedding, and the Torah is our Ketubah (Writing of Divorcement) and the 40 years of wondering was the Honey-Moon, that is how Jeremiah describes that period: “Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, “Thus says the LORD: ‘I remember you, The kindness of your youth, The love of your betrothal, When you went after Me in the wilderness, In a land not sown. Israel was holiness to the LORD, the first fruits of His increase. All that devour him will offend; Disaster will come upon them,” says the LORD.” (Jeremiah 2:2-3 NKJV) “Thus says the LORD: “The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness—Israel, when I went to give him rest.” The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore, with loving kindness, I have drawn you. Again, I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! You shall again be adorned with your tambourines And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice.” (Jeremiah 31:2-4) I could go on and bring more such texts that fully reverse the criticism of Israel by the prophets of Israel. Christians need to re-read the Torah from the beginning to the end and also the prophets in order to be cured of the very negative attitude that they inherited from the church fathers of the 2nd to the 6th Centuries after Christ. I suggest that we all read again Isaiah chapter 1 from the beginning to the end, and we will understand so much better the words of Yeshua and Paul (Acts 17:23-31): “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’” (Matthew 24:41-43)

Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Lea Korky, a dear sister who is 89 years old and served for many years as a nurse in the Sha’arei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
David Stern, a dear old brother, and friend. Suffering from advanced stages of Parkinson’s.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
My dear wife is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. She was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems. Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there and they are far from our congregation, we miss them, but we wish them a wonderful summer.

We bless our dear sister Celestine with health and blessings from Heaven for her life and her family. We pray for the Lord to be her comfort and provide sister Celestine all her physical and her spiritual and her social needs with His grace.

Pray for Bernardo Antonio Nothen Becker. Bernardo is addicted to gambling and playing poker. This caused deep sorrow to his family.
Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn into joy and friendship.

Pray for Danah my daughter that has several health issues. I pray for Danah’s protection from the Coronavirus and from any other health issue. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom and peace and calm in life and in her work.
Pray for Noaam my granddaughter. She is working two jobs now and needs good health and wisdom to make the right choices and plans for life, education, immigration to Israel, and just general protection from all harm.

Pray for Ruby Little, our dear and faithful sister who has cancer and has stopped receiving medical treatment for the cancer that she has. Please pray for Ruby that the Lord will heal and strengthen her and provide for all her needs both medically and socially.
