The Jerusalem Prayer List – June 16, 2022

Every few years for a few weeks following either Passover or Shavuot, in Israel, we are one Torah portion ahead of the rest of the world.
This week’s portion, outside of Israel, is Beha'alotecha, which you learn about here.
Netivyah and the Ro’eh Israel Congregation was the first congregation in Israel that had a Torah Scroll and worshiped in the same tradition of reading every Sabbath from the Torah and from the prophets and from the New Testament. I can say with joy that today there are several congregations of Jewish disciples of Yeshua that have Torah Scrolls and read from the Torah the weekly portion (parasha) and from the prophets the Haftarah. This next Shabbat we expect to have an overflowing crowd in our congregation. We had a wedding yesterday and the wedding party is planing to attend the Torah service and worship on Shabbat. In addition, we have a large number of of tourists from the a messianic congregation in the USA visiting us. Because the coronavirus is raising it’s head again in Israel, several of our older people are not going to attend the service on Shabbat in order to be protected from the virus and avoid such a crowded place overflowing with people shoulder to shoulder. This Shabbat, in Israel, we will be reading from one of the most interesting and difficult Torah portions in the five books of Moses. The parasha us called Shelach Lecha, “send them the men”. We read from Numbers 13:1-15:41. The portion from the prophets that we read on this Shabbat is from from Joshua 2:1-24, and from the New Testament the reading is from Hebrews 3:7-4:13. The story of the 12 leaders of their tribes that were sent by Moses to “spy” or “tour” the land is one of the stories that are deeply ingrained in the Torah story as a big trauma that caused God anger. Enough to prolong the journey in the Sinai desert by many years. What was such a serious problem with the reports of the returning 12 spies after the journey in the land of Canaan, was that the majority of the 12 spies said the same thing, the land is good and fertile, the fruit of the land is wonderful and beautiful. The cities are fortified, the inhabitants are giants (strong and big). 10 of the spies responded the same reports as Caleb and Joshua reported. It was an accurate report. In terms of facts, all of the 12 men gave the same report. So where was the problem? The problem was in the expression of doubt that Israel can take the land. The words of the 10 spies were: “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” — Numbers 13:31 The seriousness of this statement made by 10 leaders, presidents of their tribes, is connected with the circumstances of the occasion. These people were slaves in Egypt. They experienced the 10 plagues and deliverance from their long slavery, building the tombs of Egypt and their cities. These Israelite leaders crossed the sea and ate manna every day, bread from Heaven. They had victory over their enemies. The presence of the Lord was visible by day as a cloud over the Tent of Meeting, and by night as a pillar of fire. They all heard the voice of the Lord speaking from Mount Sinai, declaring the Ten Commandments and they all said: “…we will do and we will hear [obey].” — Exodus 24:7b Their years of experience with God and with God’s anointed ones, Aaron and Moses his brother, should have created enough of a relationship with God to build trust that God is able and faithful to keep His promises. But, these 10 presidents, leaders, elders of their people, after all their experiences with God still reported these words: “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” — Numbers 13:31 Here is the big issue that caused the anger of the Lord against the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai: “…we are not able…” These words are the big sin of the children of Israel, and these are the same words that reverberate in the offices of many pastors in some of the biggest churches in the world: “We are not able!” These are the words that leaders of the Body of Christ use in order to paralyze the Body from doing what is good, right, important, a good witness, and an influence on the people of God to walk out into the visible and tangible power of God. To lead and care and give victory to His children. The children “who are not able…” Yes, it is true even today that the people of God, be it the Jews in Israel or the crowded, air-conditioned churches full of good people who have received sermons saying that, “we are able to build a beautiful and specious building so that we can be comfortable with plenty of parking space…” They have been taught that they are able to raise money for the preachers — megalomaniac projects for the church members and their children. But, they have also been robbed from their faith and trust in God that “we are not able” to face the world outside the walls of the church buildings, because of the politically-correct culture that approves everything that is called “abomination” in the Word of God. The outside of the church building is full of “giants”, and they live in fortified cities like CNN, NBC, FOX News, and others. The 10 spies in the Sinai wilderness experienced the grace of God daily. Every morning, they sent their wives and their children into the sandy and rocky fields of the Sinai desert to bring home free-of-charge manna, and in the afternoon they sent their family members to collect the quail for meat for dinner. But, outside the camp, outside the church buildings or the denominational walls, the churches and the synagogues in the West are impotent. 10 out of the 12 leaders of the tribes of Israel had this attitude, and they said in public, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” — Numbers 13:31 This was seen by God as an act of rebellion and faithlessness, after years of experiences and demonstrations of God’s power in the most visible and tangible ways: crossing the sea on dry ground, drinking water from the rock, eating manna from Heaven… Here is the difference between Caleb and Joshua and the other ten leaders: “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’” — Numbers 13:30 The statement of the spies: “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.” — Numbers 13:32 Is even today a true statement. It was a true statement when the first settlers came from Eastern Europe in the end of the 19th century. It was true when David Green (who later changed his name to David Ben-Gurion to identify with Nicodemus Ben-Gurion, the half-hidden disciple of Yeshua and member of the Sanhedrin) came to the land. The land was a land that devours it’s inhabitants, when a group of Jewish students from the University in Odessa, Ukraine, were meeting almost every afternoon in a coffee, shop and decided to leave their studies in Odessa and move to the land of Israel. Among those who were in that group were David Green (Ben-Gurion), Isaac Ben-Zvi, Ahad Ha-Am, Mosheh Leib Lilienblum, Simon Dubnow, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Elhanan Leib Lewinsky, and Yehoshu’a Ravnitski, Avraham Menahem Mendel Ussishkin… Yes, these young Jews from Odessa knew well the story of the 12 spies that Moses and God sent to tour the land of Canaan. These leaders of modern Israel left Europe and Ukraine and Russia, and made their way to the land of promise when it was desolate and full of swamps, and the number of Jews in this land was very small, with no real institutions or Jewish government. Yes, these Jews believed, “we are able to overcome…” These pioneers of Zionism in the land of Israel were mostly considered secular Jews, whatever that means. But, they had faith in the transcendent God who promised to return the “dry bones” back to the cities of Israel and to Jerusalem. Yes, they believed against all odds that there will be weddings in Jerusalem and children will play in the streets under the shadow of the ancient walls of Jerusalem. Yes, just on Wednesday this week, I saw a wedding in front of the Jaffa gate, in the valley where at one time during the Roman period there was a pool of water that provided water for inhabitants of Jerusalem. On Tuesday this week I saw Jewish and Arab children playing under the walls of Jerusalem, in water fountains that flowed from the ground, and the Jewish and Arab children jumped and danced and ran in the water streams. It reminded me of the words of Jeremiah: “‘…the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say: “Praise the Lord of hosts, For the Lord is good, For His mercy endures forever”— and of those who will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause the captives of the land to return as at the first,’ says the Lord.” — Jeremiah 33:11 [NKJV] The voices of doom and impotence are still here with us, and they might also be the majority, but there is still a minority of people who have faith and trust the Lord, and are standing on the promises. Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun were not standing on the physical reality in the land of Canaan, and on what their physical eyes saw in the local inhabitants, their cities and their size. These two men looked beyond the present reality into the promises of God, and they trusted God’s promises more than they trusted their eyes and their ears, and their own fears and insecurities. I fear and stand on the old song that we used to sing from Ben-Maier’s translation in the blue song book, “Shir Hadash” (“a new song”): “Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Thro’ eternal ages let his praises ring; Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God my Savior; Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God…
List’ning ev’ry moment to the Spirit’s call, Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God…” Our biggest challenges are not financial! Our biggest challenges are manpower — leadership with a vision, a big vision, a vision that is fitting the size of our challenges in this land of Israel. The challenge to wash Yeshua from the dust of old cathedrals and abbise in Europe, to get Yeshua out of the chambers of the Catholic Inquisition and the torture chambers in the basements of dark church buildings in Spain and Portugal. We Jewish disciples of Yeshua in this land of Israel face the challenge of being prepared to embrace and receive the returning exiles from the rich western countries, and the returning Jewish dependents of the victims of the inquisition in Spain and Portugal, and their dependents who have lost their identity that was taken from them by force under the shadow of the cross, but are seeking to return. Yes, these are the giants that we, the Calebs and the Joshuas, the coals saved from the fire, have to face and prepare and say what Caleb and Joshua said: “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” — Numbers 13:30b Each one of us is a small candle giving a little light. But together we are a great light that can lighten up the darkness. If we look to the foreign missionaries that represent the Christian denominations for help, we can forget it. If we have a stick and a stutter like Moses – with God’s help we can go and take the down the walls of their strongholds and, like David, bring down the giants. God has the last word! His word is: “All of Israel shall be saved!” There is no “maybe” and no doubt that God’s word stands!

Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 97 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Lea Korky, a dear sister who is 89 years old and served for many years as a nurse in the Sha’arei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 80 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old age illnesses.
David Stern, a dear old brother and friend. Suffering from advanced stage of Parkinson’s.
Yehuda Hochman, a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Marcia Shulam, my dear wife, who is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. Just yesterday she was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems. Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby, his mother and his brother Daniel. Pray for these very important men of God: Rabbi Salt, and his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
Please pray for the Romero family who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there and they are far from our congregation and we miss them, but we wish them a wonderful summer.
Pray for brothers and sisters in the U.K.
We had a wonderful visit of our dear sister from London, Celestine King. She volunteered in the HaMotzi food program in Netivyah and we enjoyed fellowship with this precious dear sister from London. I must say that I had not enough fellowship with dear sister Celestine King because of my schedule these crazy days, and my need to be home with Marcia. She is a widow working hard and faithfully supporting Netivyah ministry for so many years.
We bless our dear sister Celestine with health and blessings from Heaven for her life and her family. We pray for the Lord to be her comfort and provide sister Celestine all her physical and her spiritual and her social needs with His grace.
Pray for our dear brother Daniel B. and his dear wife that the Lord will bless them and protect them. They live now in Wales. May the Lord watch over them.
Pray for our dear brother Reuven from Netivyah who is living and working in London now and pray for his wife. Pray that they both are protected and blessed and that Reuven’s wife finds a good job in London.
Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life and family and a solution to her problems.

Pray for a dear young man from Curitiba, Brazil, who is seriously needing our prayers for sanity and mental health.
Pray for our dear brother Marcelo G. and his family. Marcelo is a pioneer in the establishing the Teaching from Zion ministry in Brazil and the Har Zion Congregation in Belo-Horizonte.
Pray for Marcelo’s father who is up in the years. Pray for our brothers in the Har Zion congregation, the widow of Pastor George, and for those who are ill and need healing.

Pray for Bernardo Antonio Nothen Becker. Bernardo is addicted to gambling and playing poker. This caused deep sorrow to his family.
Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn to joy and friendship.

Pray for Ruby Little, our dear and faithful sister who has cancer and has stopped receiving medical treatment for the cancer that she has. Please pray for Ruby that the Lord will heal and strengthen her and provide for all her needs both medically and socially.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past issues of life. Pray for Don, Aaron’s father and Nancy’s husband. Don is in the USA now and Nancy his wife is working in Netivyah. Keep Nancy in your prayers. Nancy is in the USA now with her family and friends.

I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
