이번 토라 포션은 개인적으로 제게 가장 흥미로운 토라 포션 중 하나입니다. 토라 본문은 신명기 11:26~16:17이고, 하프타라(선지서에서 읽는 부분)는 이사야 54:11~55:5, 신약성경은 요한복음 6:35-51입니다.
항상 묻게 되는 질문은 이들 본문 사이의 연관성은 무엇인가입니다. 이렇게 선택된 본문들에 대해 우리가 아는 공식은 없습니다. 우리는 신약성경에서 예슈아의 공적 사역이 아마도 그분의 생일이 든 주(週)에 시작되었을 것이라고 압니다. 그분께서는 예우받아 하프타라 이사야 61장을 읽으셨습니다. 우리는 전통적으로 이사야 61장이 토라 포션 신명기 29:9~31:30와 연관되어 있음을 압니다. 우리는 또한 오늘날 이 토라 포션이 보통 그레고리력으로 9월 경에 오는 것도 압니다. 9월에는 유대교의 큰 절기들이 들어있는 달입니다. 1세기에 갈릴리에서는 토라와 선지서 포션이 3년 주기로 읽는 시스템으로, 지금과 달랐을 수도 있다는 것도 사실입니다. 제 요점은 회당에서 안식일마다 토라를 읽는 이 전통은 매우 오래된 전통이라는 것입니다. 신약성경 사도행전 15:19-21에서도 사도들과 예루살렘 공동체 지도자들이 공동체에 들어온 이방인들에게 안식일에 회당에 가서 토라를 읽어주는 것을 들으라고 강력히 권고하는 것이 언급되어 있습니다. 이것은 단순히 사람들이 성경을 가지고 있지 않았기 때문입니다. 이것이 이방인 형제들이 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 공부할 수 있는 유일한 방법이었습니다. 2023년 8월 11일 이번 안식일의 신명기 토라 포션에는 우리 생각과 영혼에 담고 아주 진지하게 받아들여야 할 매우 값진 진주들이 있습니다. 무엇보다, 저는 이 토라 포션의 첫 부분, 모세가 그 단어를 사용하여 그의 말을 시작하는 “르에”, 이스라엘 자손에게 명하는 “보라!”라는 단어를 좋아합니다. 제가 이것을 좋아하는 이유는 저의 왼쪽 눈이 70년 동안 시력을 잃었었기 때문입니다. 작년에 저는 미친 척하고 예루살렘 하닷사병원 안과 의사의 (임상시험) 제안을 받아들여 제 시력 회복을 시도하는 수술을 받았습니다. 저는 미친 척하고 이 얼토당토한 모험을 감행했습니다. 의사는 제게 “못할 건 또 뭡니까 – 잃을 건 아무것도 없습니다! 선생님은 현재 시력이 없고 최악의 경우라도 그대로 시력이 없을 뿐일 텐데요. 잘하면 좀 보이게 되는 것이고요.” 모세가 광야에서 이스라엘 자손에게 하는 이 명령 “보라/알라”는 중요합니다: 뭔가를 보기 위한 절차는 그다지 간단하지 않습니다. 우리의 눈은 일종의 카메라지만, 눈은 뭔가를 보는 주된 수단이 아닙니다. 눈이 보고 전두엽에 보낸 상(像)을 뇌가 해석해야 하고, 그런 다음 뇌의 다른 부분은 우리에게 우리 눈이 본 정보를 가지고 어떻게 해야 할지 판단하도록 지시합니다! 모세와 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손이 보기/알기를 원한 첫 번째 것은 이것입니다. “내가 오늘 복과 저주를 너희 앞에 두나니 너희가 만일 내가 오늘 너희에게 명하는 너희의 하나님 여호와의 명령을 들으면 복이 될 것이요 너희가 만일 내가 오늘 너희에게 명령하는 도에서 돌이켜 떠나 너희의 하나님 여호와의 명령을 듣지 아니하고 본래 알지 못하던 다른 신들을 따르면 저주를 받으리라” (신명기 11:26–28). 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손이 시내광야 40년 유랑생활 끝에 보기/알기를 원하신 것은 무엇입니까? 하나님께서는 그들이 38년 전 시내산 자락에서 받은 토라가 그냥 애플파이나 바닐라 아이스크림이 아니라, 모든 계약이나 합의와 마찬가지로 하나님께서 이스라엘에 주신 토라에 복과 저주가 있다는 것을 보기/알기 원하셨습니다. 사실 이득을 얻거나 이길 가능성이 있는 모든 법과 모든 상황에는 지거나 벌을 받을 가능성도 있습니다. 우리가 하나님과 맺고 있는 관계는 우리 모두가 (서명하여) 체결하는 여느 계약과 같습니다. 여러분이 아파트를 세를 낸다고 한다면 여러분은 계약서를 작성하고 서명(날인)해야 합니다. 여러분은 틀림없이 대단한 복이 되는 문단, 즉 여러분에게 상기 아파트나 주택에 살 권리를 주는 아름다운 문단 바로 다음에 그 아파트나 주택의 좋은 점을 누릴 수 있다는 문단이 있는 것을 보셨을 것입니다. 친구들과 가족들을 위해 바비큐도 하고 파티도 할 수 있도록 정원과 전기 그릴도 쓸 수 있을 것입니다. 차도 두 대나 주차할 수 있는 주차 공간이 있습니다. 호수가 보이는 전경이 있고 늦은 오후에는 아내와 아이들을 데리고 나가 산책할 수도 있다는 등등 … 이 계약을 통해 얻는 좋은 점들과 기회들 다음에는, 해당 부동산을 관리하고 월세를 지급하는 제한사항들과 의무사항들과 보증내용들이 옵니다. 모세가 나열하면서 이스라엘 자손에게 그들의 눈을 떠서 보라고 청한 복을 잠깐 돌아봅시다: 1. 한 나라로서 너희는 너희 땅에서 우상숭배를 일소하고 아벨산 정상에 주님께 제단을 쌓을 것이라. 2. 너희는 너희와 온 이스라엘 나라에 무엇이 저주인지, 무엇이 복인지 분명히 보고 알 것이라. 3. 멀쩡한 생각으로 “너희 새 집을 리모델링하고 먼지와 더러운 것을 없애 그것을 깨끗이” 하기 위해 마땅히 해야 할 일이 무엇인지 아는 것은 복이다. 앞서 아파트에서 살던 사람들이 남겨둔 쓰레기와 위험한 것들을 청소하고 소제하는 것은 언제나 아주 좋은 일이다. 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손에게 명하시는 두 번째는 좋고 정하고 거룩한 장소, 하나님께 봉헌된 제단을 세우라는 것입니다. 우주의 창조주 하나님께 예배할, 정하고 잘 마련되고 주님께 예배와 감사를 표하기에 적합한 장소입니다. 이 제단은, 팔레스타인이 그것을 훼손하려고 힘썼으나 완전히 허물지는 못했기 때문에, 20년 전의 모습만큼 좋은 상태는 아니지만, 아직 있습니다. 다음은 이번 토라 포션에서 여러분이 읽는 바, 모세가 명하고, 여호수아서에서 이스라엘 지파들이 세운 그 제단 사진입니다. 여러분이 이 제단을 세우라는 명령을 읽어보시면, 여러분은 즉시 이 제단이 무엇보다도 매우 크고 평범하지 않다는 것과, 이스라엘식이라는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 이 사진의 왼쪽에서 여러분은 아벨산 정상에서부터 계곡을 보실 수 있는데요, 여기에 세겜성이 있던 곳입니다. 계곡을 가로질러 그리심산도 볼 수 있는데요, 이곳에서는 이스라엘 민족의 나머지 절반이 그리심산 정상에 자리를 잡았었습니다. 그들이 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손에게 약속하신 복을 읽었습니다. 레위인들은 그 아래 계곡 가운데 있고, 이스라엘 백성은 모두 하나님께서 이스라엘이 소유라라고 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱과 그 후손에 주신 그 땅을 소유하는 이 언약에 “아멘”이라고 말하며 동의했습니다. 
이번 안식일 토라 포션에서 그 다음 큰 일은 우리에게 하나님의 선택을 받은 백성인 우리가 그 땅의 우상숭배 문화와 그곳 이교도들의 악한 행습과는 달라야 한다는 것입니다. 이것은 이스라엘 자손에게, 그리고 21세기의 우리에게도 우리가 하나님을 알지 못하고 우상을 숭배하는 사람들의 악한 문화를 따르지 말아야 한다는 것을 가르치고 있는 신명기 18:9–14 말씀입니다. 유대인이든 유대인이 아니든 침례를 통해 예슈아와 함께 죽고 새 생명을 받고 성령 충만을 받은 우리는 우리 주변의 이교도들과는 다른 삶의 기반과 양식을 가져야 합니다. 우리는 선함과 공의과 정의의 증인이 되어야 하며 사회의 머리가 되어야지 꼬리가 되어서는 안 됩니다. The Jerusalem Prayer List – August 11, 2023

This Torah portion is one of the most fascinating for me personally. The reading from the Torah is from Deuteronomy 11:26 – 16:17, and from the Haftarah (the reading from the Prophets) is from Isaiah 54:11 – 55:5, and from the New Testament from John 6:35-51.
Always the question is what the connection is between these texts. There is no formula that we know about these choices. We know from the New Testament that Yeshua’s ministry started officially probably on his birthday week, and He was honored to read the Haftarah from Isaiah chapter 61. From tradition we know that the reading of Isaiah 61 is connected to the Torah reading from Deuteronomy 29:9 -31:30. We also know that today this reading normally comes around the month of September on the Gregorian calendar. The month of September is the month of the High Holidays in Judaism. It is true that it might be that in the first century in the Galilee they could have had a different system of reading the Torah and the prophets; a system that was a three yearly reading cycle. My point is that this tradition of reading the Torah in the Synagogue every Shabbat was a very ancient tradition. It is also mentioned in the New Testament in the book of Acts chapter 15:19-21, and the Apostles and the leaders of the community in Jerusalem recommended strongly for the Gentiles who have joined the community to go to synagogue on Shabbat and hear the Torah read. This was simply because people didn’t have Bibles in their possession. This was the only way that our Gentile brothers could hear and study the Word of God. This Shabbat of August 11, 2023, the text from Deuteronomy has some pearls of great price that we ought to collect into our minds and souls and take very seriously. First of all, I like the first words of the reading Moses starts with; the word “Re’eh” — commanding the children of Israel, “SEE”! I like this because I was blind with my left eye for 70 years. Last year I was crazy and accepted the offer of an eye doctor from the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem to operate and try to restore my eye sight. I was crazy enough to try this crazy adventure. The doctor said to me, “why not – you have nothing to lose! You are blind now and the worst that could happen is that you will remain blind. The best that would happen is that you will see something.” This command of Moses, to the Children of Israel in the wilderness, is significant; “SEE” – in order to see anything the procedure is not so simple. Our eye is a camera, but the eye is not the main tool for seeing something. The brain has to process the picture that your eye sees and pass the picture to the front lobe of your brain for interpretation of the picture and then to other parts of the brain that directs us to make decisions what to do with the information that our eyes have seen! Here is the first thing that Moses and God wanted for the children of Israel to SEE, or in the King James language “Behold!” ““Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.” (Deuteronomy 11:26–28 NKJV). What did God want the children to see toward the end of their 40 years of wondering in the Sinai Wilderness for 40 years? God wanted them to see that the Torah that they received 38 years earlier at the foot of Mount Sinai, is not just apple pie and vanilla ice-cream, but like every contract and agreement the Torah that God gave Israel has blessings and curses. In fact, every law and every situation that has the potential to gain and win also has the potential to lose and be punished. Our relationship with God is like any contract that all of us have ever signed. If you have ever rented an apartment you had to write a contract or sign a contract. You must have seen that there are paragraphs that are a big blessing, and immediately after the wonderful paragraphs that give you the right to live in the said apartment and enjoy the wonderful features of the apartment or the house. You could use the garden and the Weber Grill to barbecue and entertainment for your friends and family. You have a two-car garage to part your cars. You have a lake view and can, in the late afternoon, take your wife and children for a walk… After the good things and opportunities that you received in the contract, come the limitations and obligations and guarantees to take care of the property and pay the rent. Let us take a short review of the blessings that Moses lists and asks the children of Israel to open their eyes and see these blessings: 1. You, as a nation, will have the privilege to clean up your land from idolatry and build an altar to the Lord on top of Mount Abel. 2. You will have a clear vision and knowledge of what is a curse and what is a blessing for you and for all the nation of Israel. 3. Knowing with a clear mind what it is you ought to do to “remodel your new home and make it clear from any dirt and impurity” is a blessing. It is always a very good thing to clear and clean the junk and dangerous things left in the apartment that the previous dwellers left behind. The second thing that God commands the children of Israel is to build a good, a pure and holy place, an altar that is dedicated to God. A place to worship God, the Creator of the Universe, that is pure and well organized and suitable for worship and showing gratitude to the Lord. This altar still exists, although it is not in as good a shape as it was 20 years ago, because Palestinians worked hard to destroy it, but they didn’t succeed to do the destruction totally. Here is a picture of the altar that you read about in our Torah portion, commanded by Moses, and you can read in the book of Joshua that the tribes of Israel built it. If you read the command to build this altar, you will see immediately that this altar is first of all very very big and unusual and it is Israelite (There are not stairs that lead to the top of the altar but an incline…). In the picture on the left side, you see from the top of Mount Abel down to the valley, where the city of Shechem is. Across the valley you see also Mount Gerizim where the other half of the nation was perched on top of Mount Gerizim. They read the blessing that God promised to the children of Israel. The Levites were down in the middle of the Valley and all the people of Israel said “Amen” and agreed to this covenant to possess the Land that God gave Israel to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their decedents. The next big thing in our reading of the Torah this next Shabbat, is teaching us is that we, the chosen people of God, must be different from the local idolatrous culture and evil practices of the local pagan populations. This is from Deuteronomy 18:9 – 14, teaching the children of Israel and also us, in the 21st Century, that we are not to follow the bad culture of the people who don’t know God and worship idols. We, the Jews and the non-Jews, who have died with Yeshua in Baptism and have received a new life and have been filled with the Holy Spirit, must have a different matrix and life style from the pagans around us. We are to be witnesses of goodness and righteousness and justice and be the head and not the tail of society. (Please read the text). In 1968, in Nashville, the conclave on the campus of Vanderbilt University, I heard the editor of Play Boy magazine say this: “The Church is supposed to be the head lights and leader of our culture and society. But instead, the church is the back lights of this vehicle called culture in our times!” Although this man had an abominable place of work, what he said is true. We the disciples of Yeshua our Rabbi, Savior and Redeemer, the Son of God and the One seating on the right Hand of the almighty Father of all Creation, must be different and proud of the difference. We need to influence the world around us and not be dragged behind the evil and dirty culture that creates victims of the culture and not victors of heaven. We, the disciples of Yeshua, Jews and non-Jews, are born to live a life that leads and changes the evil and corrupt culture and practices that lead our youth and the world into a deep abyss and abandonment of the good life into chaos. Dear brothers, you might say, that Joseph Shulam is dreaming of the impossible! But, dear brothers, “God’s Israel” has been fighting this fight against idolatry and injustice and for equality and righteousness, for over 2000 years. Yes, you are right, there are no little criminals and Jewish people who are even leaders of the worst abominations possible. Yes, we have Jews like Harvey Weinstein, and Jeffry Epstein, Jewish Mafiosos like Meyer Lansky, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, and several more. And Jews have not been a pure and clean Linen cloth the way God expected them to be, and God made sure that we pay for our disobedience and departure from His instructions. We should have been much better because we have had the Torah, the Law of God, for the longest period of history. But, now both Jews and Christians ought to take our mission and task and gather under the guidance of our Messiah and the Holy Spirit of God and change and refocus the right power of God’s truth. We really must stop following the idolatrous culture of our society and remember what God commanded and the task that God has given us from the very beginning: when He chose Abraham and His seed to be a blessing in the whole world. Let us reassess ourselves, and our own families, of how we can start with small steps to be the light and be the salt of this world. Please remember that Netivyah depends on the love and charity of disciples of the Messiah who believe in God’s Word and believe that Yeshua will return and gather His sheep and pass them through the judgement, each according to his deeds and according to the charity that he shared for the needy and hungry and the servants of the Kingdom! Just a word about Isaiah 54:11 – 55:5 reading from the Prophets. These are wonderful and comforting words of God, through the prophet Isaiah, after the demands and condemnation of Israel’s sinfulness and departure of God’s word: “For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has mercy on you. “O you afflicted one, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay your foundations with sapphires. I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of crystal, and all your walls of precious stones. All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children. In righteousness you shall be established; You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; And from terror, for it shall not come near you. Indeed, they shall surely assemble, but not because of Me. Whoever assembles against you shall fall for your sake.” Is there another nation or church or tribe in the world that has such promises from the Creator of the World Himself? No! There is not any group of people in the world who have such harsh judgement as Israel, in history, and at the same time such wonderful and magnificent promises of goodness and greatness of God’s grace like Israel. This is why the gentiles who have given their lives to God through Yeshua our Messiah and King of the Jews, have entered in the covenants of Israel through Yeshua’s death burial and resurrection and have become inheritors of the covenants and promises of God to Israel. Please pray for Israel. In the last 48 hours Israel entered into the city of Gennin – a terrorist hothouse. More than 18 Jews were killed in the last two months by terrorists that came out of the city of Gennin.
As I am writing this prayer list – I am also watching television and seeing the operation that the Israeli Military is conducting in this nest of snakes called Gennin. Praise the Lord that from the several thousand Israeli soldiers no one has been killed or wounded in the last 48 hours.
We need to pray that this continues to be the case. We need to pray for the World to understand and see that Israel is dealing with people that at least their leadership, is not interested in peace. They are radical Islamists who are only driven by hate for Israel and for Jews and peace is the last thing on their minds.
Our government was holding back for months from opening this Pandora’s box and getting rid of the terrorists that are not only killing Jews and terrorizing the peaceful Israeli population, but also preventing their own people from working in Israel in good paying jobs provides honorable living for their families.
I hate that our boys, the men of our congregation, still serve in the Army and most of them in reserves have to fight and use weapons and do war in order to protect the civilian population of Israel from terrorism driven by hate and blindness.
Please pray for the Middle East and for the world to see and understand what the reality is here in this part of the world. The land that provided King David, and the prophets and Yeshua the Messiah – wants peace with our neighbors.
But they don’t want the hand that is stretched out in peace. They want to kill all the Jews and take their land, that is flourishing and being a blessing for all the world, and make it a dump like their own place in Gaza and in the Arab countries.
In Jerusalem pray for the following brothers and sisters who are in need of divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 88 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please keep praying for Marcia Shulam my wife. Pray that Marcia’s memory will stop weakening, and that her arthritis be healed and stop being active, and her strength to return to where she can take more care of herself.
Please pray for people in the prayer list: as you can see, we pray for people in every continent, because we have brothers and sisters around the world, and our interest is not only for ourselves, but for God’s people in the north and south, east and west, even in the far islands of the oceans. Please don’t forget to pray for the health of Kari Antilles in Finland. He is a dear brother and supporter in prayer for Netivyah for many years.
Brazil
Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:
“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, And there shall be holiness; The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau, For the Lord has spoken. The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead. And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South. Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker, who is suffering from back problems. Aratuza de Oliveira his wife. Pray for this 3-year-old child that has serious problems with his eyes and ask the Lord to give healing to his eyes. This child’s name is Caique de Oliveira Becker.
Pray for Bernardo Antonio Nothen Becker. Bernardo is addicted to gambling and playing poker. This caused deep sorrow to his family.
Please pray for Bruno Henrique Cardoso jr. for his studies and his health.
Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn into joy and friendship.
A 70-year-old Pastor Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias, He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil, and suffers from diabetes.
Pray for Roberto Morias, a dear brother who is going through heart surgery and an angiogram.

Please pray for a dear 71-year-old sister called Bee Kim. She lost consciousness on February 26, 2023. She has not regained her consciousness after a massive stroke.

In India, Pastor Isaac, from Chennai, needs our prayers. Pastor Isaac is suffering from kidney problems and has to have dialysis several times per week.

Please pray for Ruby K. from Hong Kong. Ruby has gone through a very complicated surgery for multiple cancers in her body. The surgery was very long, and Ruby is back home now recovering. Please lift Ruby K. and ask the Lord to heal and deliver Ruby from Hong Kong.

Pray for Noaam my granddaughter. She is working two jobs now and needs good health and wisdom to make the right choices and plans for life, education, immigration to Israel, and just general protection from all harm.
Pray for David Young the preacher in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who is back to preaching after recovering from medical issues. Please keep David in your prayers.
Please pray for our dear sister Ruby Little who begins to get Hospice Care for her cancer situation.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past issues of life.
Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel. Pray for these very important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
Pray a blessing for a dear sister Angela Isby and her situation. Pray for Tiz H. and Lion H.
Also pray for Ilana Avramov who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana has fallen and in now in rehab learning how to walk again. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.
Joseph Mock, a young man in his 30s, a dear brother that was named after me, has leukemia in an advanced stage. He is in the hospital and needs our urgent prayers. Joseph Mock is the son of Steve Mock, who is also one of the faithful disciples of Yeshua who became a believer in the early years of Netivyah.
Steve Mock is also in need of our prayers. He had a massive stroke and now he cannot speak, and has other limitations. Please keep Steve Mock also in your prayers, and pray for his wife Josse for strength and blessings and good health.
Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.
I am asking a special prayer for a dear brother and friend who is now doing a greatly important work in a very dangerous and precarious part of the world. Just mention DadyLion in your prayers, and ask for divine protection and angelic accompaniment for this man of God.

We ask you to join us in prayer that the right young people, talented and anointed by the Spirit of God will come and work with us, and the provision to pay the Netivyah workers a fair and just payment.
I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
