요셉 슐람, 이스라엘 예루살렘
매주 제가 토라 포션(파라샤)을 읽을 때마다 저는 하나님의 말씀에서 지금의 세태에 직접적으로 말하는 뭔가를 발견합니다. 우리에게는 적어도 2,500년 된 문서가 있는데요, 이 문서는 3,000년도 더 된 모세 때만큼이나 오늘날에도 여전히 인간의 의제가 되는 이슈와 문제들을 다루고 있습니다!
이번 안식일에는 토라와 선지자의 글에서 두 포션을 읽습니다! 우리는 마톹(민수기 30:1~32:42)과 마세이(민수기 33:1~36:13)를 읽을 것입니다. 선지자의 글에서는 예레미야 1:1~3:4를 읽을 것입니다. 신약성경에서는 빌립보서 3;12-16와 야고보서 4:1-12을 읽을 것입니다. 민수기 30장의 의제는 맹세한 약속, 서약, 구속력 있는 의무의 법적 강제력입니다. 이 이슈는 보편적이며, 모든 시대와 문화권에 중요한 것입니다. 오늘날 이 이슈가 배로 중요해진 것은 말이 글로 기록되고 오디오와 비디오로 녹화되어 수 초 안에 전 세계로 방송되기 때문입니다. 우리가 말하고 행한 것의 녹화 기록이 있는데, 그것을 우리는 인지하지도 못하는 경우도 있습니다. 빅 브라더(독재자)는 늘상 어느 곳에서든 우리를 도청해왔습니다! 우리가 그것을 좋아하지 않을지 모르나, 스파트폰, 아이패드, 컴퓨터 등 편리하고 접속을 가능케 하는 기기들을 계속 사용하는 한 우리는 그것을 막을 수는 없습니다. 그러니 우리는, 특히 예슈아의 제자들인 우리는 우리가 말하는 것을 배로 경계하고 더욱 조심해야 합니다. 이 이슈에 관하여 예슈아께서 말씀하신 것은 이렇습니다: “나는 너희에게 이르노니 도무지 맹세하지 말지니 하늘로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 보좌임이요 땅으로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 발등상임이요 예루살렘으로도 하지 말라 이는 큰 임금의 성임이요 네 머리로도 하지 말라 이는 네가 한 터럭도 희고 검게 할 수 없음이라 오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라.” – 마태복음 5:34-37 야고보가 그의 서신에서 예슈아의 가르침을 거듭 말한 것은 흥미롭습니다: “형제들아 서로 원망하지 말라 그리하여야 심판을 면하리라 보라 심판주가 문 밖에 서 계시니라 형제들아 주의 이름으로 말한 선지자들을 고난과 오래 참음의 본으로 삼으라 보라 인내하는 자를 우리가 복되다 하나니 너희가 욥의 인내를 들었고 주께서 주신 결말을 보았거니와 주는 가장 자비하시고 긍휼히 여기시는 이시니라 내 형제들아 무엇보다도 맹세하지 말지니 하늘로나 땅으로나 아무 다른 것으로도 맹세하지 말고 오직 너희가 그렇다고 생각하는 것은 그렇다 하고 아니라고 생각하는 것은 아니라 하여 정죄 받음을 면하라.” – 야고보서 5:9-12 예슈아와 야고보는 예슈아의 제자들인 우리에게 단호한 말, 약속, 당사자 사이에 무엇이든 약속을 했든 동의를 했든 지키고 행하고자 하는 의도를 가지고 하라고 가르치십니다. 우리가 살고 있는 동네에 우리가 예슈아를 믿는 자들인 줄 아는 상인이 있어, 그가 우리에게 예슈아를 믿는 유명한 유대인 신자가 그를 속였는데 지킬 마음도 없이 약속을 했었다며 이러쿵저러쿵 말할 때, 이것은 언제나 예루살렘에 있는 우리나 다른 이들에게 제일 힘든 일 중 하나입니다. 훨씬 더 심각한 경우는 어떤 기독교 선교사가 그 상점에서 어떤 물건을 가져가면서 그것을 자기 아내에게 보여준 다음에 다음 날 돌려주겠다고 하고는 몇 달이 지나도 그 물건을 되돌려주지도 않고, 전화에 응답도 안 하고, 그가 한 약속도 지키지 않았다는 것입니다. 우리는 토라와 우리 주 예슈아와 그의 동생 야고보가 모두 같은 말을 하고 있음을 봅니다. 즉, 네가 약속을 하거나 맹세를 하거나 서약을 하면, 주님께서 네게 그것을 지키도록 의무를 지우신다. 그런데 네가 그것을 지키지 않으면 그것은 보통의 상황에서는 그 누구도 너를 면제시킬 수 없는 아주 심각한 죄가 된다는 것입니다. 이제 여기에 토라의 정치적으로 옳지 않은 부분이 오는데요, 저는 토라가 가차 없이 무신론적인 우리의 현대 도시들의 문화와 거리를 지배하는 정치적으로 옳은 사이비 종교에 반대되게 증거하고 있어서 기쁩니다. 토라에 따르면 우리의 여자들(아내나 딸들)은 얼마나 다행입니까? 여자들은 약속도 할 수 있고 서약이나 맹세도 할 수 있지만, 그들의 아버지나 남편이 생존하고 있으면, 그들이 그들의 여자들, 딸들과 아내들을 그들의 맹세나 서약이나 스스로 지운 구속력 있는 의무에서 자유로워질 수 있게 해줄 수 있습니다. 우리에게 토라와 선지자들의 글을 주시고, 우리를 구원하시기 위해 그분의 독생자를 주시고, 우리의 여자들에게 그들의 서약이나 맹세나 스스로 지운 구속력 있는 의무를 무효로 만들 수 있는 특권을 주신 우리 하나님은 얼마나 멋지고 지혜로운지요! 우리를 디자인하시고 우리에게 평생 동반자를 주시고 우리의 강점과 약속을 아시고 가능한 한 우리의 삶을 복잡하지 않게 만들 조항을 만들어 주신 주님은 얼마나 멋지고 지혜로운지요! 저는 평등을 믿는데요, 여자들이 전능하신 하나님으로부터 받은, 그들의 약속이나 서약이나 스스로 지운 의무가 그들의 아버지나 남편에 의해 무효가 될 수 있다는 특권에 관해서만은 여성들과 동등해지고 싶습니다. 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 마지막 사항은 우리는 모두 우리가 한 약속과 말이 우리 개인에게나 우리 가족에게나 공동체에 얼마나 심각하고 중대한 결과를 끼칠 수 있는지, 그리고 우리 공동체와 우리 주님께 어떻게 비춰질지 보아야 합니다. 가장 단순한 것이 우리에게 가장 좋은 것입니다. 우리 동네에 있는 이들과 우리가 함께 사업과 상거래를 하는 이들이 우리의 “그렇다”는 “그렇다”고, 우리의 “아니라”는 “아니라”인 줄 알게 합시다! 예슈아의 제자들이라고 하는 우리 모두는 우리의 말이 우리의 증언의 일부분이며, 우리의 말이 우리 자신을 부끄럽게 만들 때는 예슈아도 덩달아 부끄럽게 만드는 것임을 알도록 합시다!
이스라엘은 코로나바이러스 2차 창궐이 심해지고 있는데요, 매일 코로나바이러스 신규 확진자가 1,200명 이상 생기고 있습니다. 입원환자수도 증가하고 있고 사망자수도 증가하고 있습니다.
저희 나라가 미국이나 브라질처럼 몹시 고통당하고 있기는 해도 몇 주 전 이탈리아나 스페인처럼 호되지는 않습니다. 그렇지만 이스라엘같이 작은 나라에 살고 있는 우리에게 이런 숫자는 심각한 것입니다. 정부는 2주 동안 전격 봉쇄조치를 내리는 것을 심각하게 고려하고 있지만 이미 충분히 전격 봉쇄에 대한 반대가 있습니다. 그래서 저희 모두는 이렇게 되지 않도록 바라며 기도하고 있습니다.
이스라엘에는 재정 문제가 정말 심각하여 즉각적인 해결책이 필요한 사람이 많습니다. 저희는 저희가 할 수 있는 일을 하고 있는데요, 예루살렘의 가난한 사람들에게 식료품을 더 늘려 주며 계속하고 있습니다. 오늘 저희 친교실은 해질녘에 내보낼 식료품 꾸러미로 가득 찼습니다.

그 어머니는 아파트 월세를 낼 돈도, 식료품을 살 돈도, 전기세 등 공과금을 낼 돈도 없는데다, 은행에는 아주 큰 빚이 있었습니다. 라디오로 이 가족이 이미 2주나 전기가 끊긴 상태고, 이미 두 달 동안 월세를 내지 못했기 때문에 거리에 나앉게 될 것이라는 이들의 이야기를 듣자마자, 이스라엘 대중이 동원되어 몇 시간 만에 그들은 냉장고와 식품저장고를 가득 채울 정도의 식료품과 전기세를 위시한 공과금과 심지어 은행에 있는 빚도 갚을 정도의 돈이 생겼습니다.
이것은 사람들이 당신을 믿고 당신이 공동체 안에 평판이 좋은 정직한 사람으로 알려져 있을 때 역사하는 아주 특별한 이스라엘의 정신입니다. 자신이 가난한 중에도 더 힘든 상황에 있는 사람들을 돕는 선한 사람들이 있습니다. 저는 제가 이스라엘에 살고 있는 것과 보통의 이스라엘 사람의 정신이 하나님의 영과 협력하여 역사하는 것을 목도할 수 있다는 것이 행운이라고 생각합니다.
우리는 브라질, 미국, 영국, 핀란드, 이탈리아, 독일, 홍콩, 대만, 중국, 일본, 그리고 종종 병원들이 팬데믹에 적합하게 잘 되어 있지 못한 아랍 국가들에 있는 우리 형제님들을 위해 기도합니다. 물론, 우리는 특히 이스라엘을 위해서 기도하며 하나님의 긍휼과 선하심이 분명히 드러나 이스라엘에 있는 모든 사람과 우리 이웃나라들과 세상에게 보이도록 중보기도합니다.
우리는 전 세계적으로 일자리를 잃고, 사업체의 문을 닫아야만 했고, 파산을 선고했어야만 했던 수백만과, 사업체를 다시 재개할 수 없게 된 많은 이들을 위해 기도합니다.
이 바이러스는 인체에 여러 모로 해로운데, 최고의 의사들과 과학자들조차 아직 완전히 파악하고 있지 못합니다. 우리는 전 세계적으로 대파괴를 낳고 있는 이 바이러스를 막아낼 백신과 의약 개발에 기적적인 돌파가 있도록 주님께 기도해야 합니다.
물론, 우리는 성경의 전염병이 모두 하나님으로부터 온다는 것과, 사람들이 회개하고 주님을 기쁘시게 할 의의 길로 되돌아오면 하나님께서는 하루 만에도 그 전염병을 그치게 하실 수 있다는 것을 압니다.
마르시아의 건강과 기억력과 당뇨와 류마티스 관절염을 위해 계속 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 저희 딸 다나는 지금 처한 상황 때문에 여러분의 기도가 많이 필요하고, 저희 손녀 노아암도 그렇습니다. 여러분의 기도 가운데 다나와 노아암을 올려드려 주십시오. 역시 이 시기에 집에 있으면서 재택근무하고 있는 저희 아들 배리와 그의 가족 베쓰와 저희 손자 죠이도 올려드려 주십시오. 마르시아의 친정어머니는 91세시며 마르시아의 오빠들과 그들의 가족들도 모두 우리의 기도가 필요합니다.

Every week when I read the Torah portion (the parasha) I find something in the word of God that directly speaks to my current now. We have a document that is at least 2500 years old and it addresses issues and problems that are still on the human agenda today as much as they were in the days of Moses, over 3000 years ago!
We are reading a double portion of the Torah and the prophets on this next Shabbat! We are reading Matot (Numbers 30:1-32:42) and Masei (Numbers 33:1-36:13). From the prophets we are reading from Jeremiah 1:1-3:4. From the New Testament we read this Shabbat from Philippians 3;12-16, and from James (Jacob) 4:1-12. The agenda of Numbers 30 is the legal force of promises and vows and binding obligations undertaken under oath. This issue is universal, and has importance for all ages and cultures. Today the issue has doubled in importance because words are being written and recorded by audio and video and broadcast around the globe in seconds. There are records of what we speak and of what we do of which we are even unaware. Big Brother has us bugged at all times and in any location! We might not like it but we can’t stop it as long as we continue to use our convenient and accessible devices – our smart phones, iPads, computers… so we must be doubly alert and more careful of what we say especially as disciples of Yeshua. Here is what Yeshua has to say concerning this issue: “But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” – Matthew 5:34-37 [NKJV] It is interesting that James (Jacob) in his letter repeats the teaching of Yeshua: “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful. But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No,’ lest you fall into judgment.” – James 5:9-12 [NKJV] Yeshua and James (Jacob) are instructing us, Yeshua’s disciples, to have a firm word, a promise and an honest intent to keep and do whatever it is that was promised or agreed upon between the parties. It is always one of the hardest thing for me, and for others in Jerusalem to have some merchant in town who knows that we are believers in Yeshua, and he tells us that so and so, a known Jewish believer in Yeshua, has cheated him and made promises without any intention of keeping them. Even much more serious are cases where some Christian missionary has taken a product from the shop with the promise to return it the next day after he shows it to his wife. Months later the Christian has not returned the product, has not answered his phone, has not kept his promise. We see that both the Torah and our Lord Yeshua and James his brother all say the same thing – if you make a promise or take a vow or take an oath the Lord Himself obligates you to keep it and if you don’t keep it – it becomes a very serious sin that no one can absolve you of under normal circumstances. Now here comes that not politically correct part of the Torah and I am happy that the Torah is witnessing against the politically correct cult that is ruling the culture and the streets of our modern Godless towns without pity. How lucky are our women according to the Torah? Women can make a promise and even take an oath or make a vow, but if they have a father that is living or a husband, they can free their women, daughters and wives, from their vows and oaths and self-imposed binding obligation. How wonderful and wise is our God who gave us the Torah and the Prophets and sent His only begotten Son to save us and has given our women, the privilege of having their vows and oaths and self-imposed binding obligations annulled. The Lord who designed us and who has provided us with a companion for life, knows our strengths and our weaknesses and makes provision to uncomplicate our lives as much as possible. I believe in equality and would like to have equality with women if only for this privilege that women have received from the almighty God that their promises and vows and self-imposed obligations can be annulled by their father or their husband. The last thing that I want to say is that we should all see how serious and what grave consequences our promises and words can have on us personally and upon our families and communities and also reflect upon our communities and our Lord. The simplest thing is the best for us. Let those in our town and those with whom we do business and commerce know that our “yes” is “yes”, and our “no” is “no!” Let us all who claim to be disciples of Yeshua know that our words are a part of our witness and when our words put us to shame, they put Yeshua our Lord to shame as well.
Israel is deep into a second wave of the coronavirus and every day there are more than 1200 new cases of coronavirus infected people. The number of hospitalized patients is growing and so is the number of dead.
Although we are suffering as badly as places in the United States or Brazil but not as badly as Italy and Spain were a few weeks ago, still for us living in a small country like Israel, these numbers are serious. The government is seriously considering imposing a total shut down for two weeks, but there is enough opposition to a total closure that we all hope and pray that it will not come to this.
There are many in Israel that have real serious financial problems that are in need of immediate solution. We are doing what we can and continue with increased food supplies for the poor of Jerusalem. Our fellowship hall today is filled with a large supply of food packages that will be gone by nightfall.
The wonderful thing is that when the Israeli public is aware of some extreme need there is always a significant mobilization of people to help. This morning I heard of a single mother with three daughters who had run out of money because her job had been terminated due to the coronavirus.
The mother had no money to pay the rent on her apartment, no money for food, no money to pay the utilities especially the electricity and on top of this a very large debt in the bank. As soon as this case was heard on the radio, that this family is already two weeks without electricity, and that they will be in the streets because they haven't been able to pay their rent already for two months, the Israeli public mobilized, and, within a few hours, they had enough groceries to fill their refrigerator and their pantry and money to pay for their utilities, especially the electricity and also to cover their debt in the bank.
This is a very special Israeli spirit that works when people trust you and when you are known in the community as an honest person with a good name. There are good people that even out of their own poverty help those who are in more difficult situations. I feel fortunate that I live in Israel and am able to witness the spirit of the average Israeli at work in concert with the spirit of God.
We pray for our brothers in Brazil, the USA, Great Britain, Finland, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan, and the Arab countries where hospitals are often not as well suited for a pandemic. Of course, we intercede especially for Israel and ask for God’s mercy and goodness to be explicitly shown and be made visible to all in Israel and to our neighbors and to the world.
We pray for the millions of people around the world who have lost their jobs, and have had to close their businesses, and for those who have had to declare bankruptcy, and for the many who are not going to be able to reopen their businesses.
This virus is harmful to the human body, harmful in ways that even the best doctors and scientists don’t yet quite fully understand. We must pray to the Lord for a miracle breakthrough in finding a vaccine and medications to stop this virus from creating havoc around the whole world.
Of course, we know that plagues in the Bible are all from God and God can stop them in a day if the people repent and return to the paths of righteousness that please our Lord.
Please keep praying for Marcia’s health, her memory, and diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Danah our daughter needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her brothers and their families all need our prayers.
Brazil is in bad shape with the coronavirus and the business community with the present social unrest is also undergoing a major challenge. We have so many brothers and sisters in Brazil that need our prayer and intercession on their behalf.
Here is a short list of communities and brothers and sisters in Brazil who need our prayers and God’s grace in these hard times: Pray for the sister communities of Netivyah in Brazil, Har Zion, Ensenando de Siao, and Sar-El in Curitiba and other brothers and sisters in the city of Curitiba, and the Messianic congregations in Fortaleza, Santa Maria, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and in other cities.

Pray for the government of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Our whole government is in need of divine grace and wisdom to deal with the coronavirus and another virus that is as serious - a political virus that brings disorder and division and lack of unity and a lack of vision for a program for the near future.
Also, Israel’s dependence on the empires of the world is an old old illness that could be called a plague as old as the days of Hezekiah and Ahab and his wife Jezebel. We need a cure for this co-dependency on the empires of this world. We need deliverance and a move to sole dependence on the almighty one of Israel.
As regards Prime Minister Netanyahu ‘s court trial, I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in having a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!
The world is in a terrible flux as millions of people are dealing with this coronavirus and hundreds of thousands of families have already lost their loved ones to this plague of biblical proportions. Still, we also need to be grateful for countries like Israel who are beginning to come out and return to normality with caution and care.
From our congregation in Jerusalem we ask you to join us in prayer for the following dear brothers and sisters: Gary, Melanie, Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Zvi D. and Batsheva, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby. Pray for some dear friends, Rabbi Morton Salt, and his family and Rabbi Hassablad. They are both older and need protection and blessings. Pray also for the Orthodox rabbinical group called Tzohar. A group of courageous rabbis in Israel who want to see a restoration of Torah values and a more organic approach to Jewish values and life-style. They are doing a great job in bringing the reality of the Torah into practice in the 21st Century.
The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support.
They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.
Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your very best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
