The Jerusalem Prayer List for July 18, 2026

The Torah portion this next Shabbat of July 19, 2026, is the first reading from the book of Deuteronomy = Devarim in Hebrew, which means words or things!

The reading on July 18, 2026, begins with the book of Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22.

From the prophets, the reading is from Isaiah 1:1-27.

From the New Testament, from Matthew 32:37-24:28.

All these texts that we will read on this next Shabbat are extremely important because they contain some of the major principles for understanding historical narratives like the book of Deuteronomy and prophetic narratives like the first three chapters of Isaiah, and also from the New Testament, the reading is from Matthew 23:37-24:28.

This coming Shabbat is one of the most significant of the Jewish calendar. It is Shabbat Chazon ("The Sabbath of Vision"), named after the opening words of the Haftarah: "The vision (חֲזוֹן) of Isaiah the son of Amoz…" (Isaiah 1:1). This reading normally falls on the Shabbat just before the date of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem on the 9th day of the month of Av, in Hebrew Tisha B'Av!

It is interesting and not accidental that both times the Temple in Jerusalem fell and was destroyed on the same date of the 9th of the month of Av according to the Hebrew calendar. This time is also always the time that Jews mourn for the destruction of the temples, the first time and the second time. It always falls on the Shabbat immediately before Tisha B'Av, the day of mourning for the destruction of both the First and Second Temples.

The three readings form a remarkably unified theological message. For me personally, the fact that both times of the fall of the Temple in Jerusalem happened on the same date of the Hebrew Calendar is a strong proof that it was an act of God to destroy the Temple twice on the same date. I don't have any revelation from heaven about these events, but it is reasonable to believe that such events, especially in the history of the Jewish nation, are ordained and orchestrated by God Himself! Yes, God can even use our enemies to teach us some important lessons and reveal to us through the consequences of our actions and evil deeds that He, the Almighty One of Israel, is in full control of our life as a nation and of our dignity as a people! It is my opinion that nothing in the history of Israel is accidental and that all that is good that happened to us in our history and all that is bad that happened to us in our history is orchestrated and happened and ordained by God because of his love and care of this nation called Israel, whose father is Abraham and whose future is predicated by the prophets of Israel in the Bible.

The reading in the Torah: Deuteronomy 1:1–3:22 (Devarim). The reading from the prophets (The Haftarah) is from Isaiah 1:1-27, which deals with the call to be a prophet of Isaiah! And the reading from the New Testament is from Matthew 23-24.

Matthew 23 contains perhaps the strongest denunciation of religious leaders of the Jewish people in the time of Christ and also the strongest condemnation of the Jewish religious establishment and leadership in the New Testament. The question that I would like to broaden in this prayer list is the reasons for this harsh and strong condemnation of the religious leadership in Jerusalem. You see, it is precisely this period that had some of the great luminaries of rabbinical (pharisaic) leadership. In the beginning of the first century A.D., there were at the head of the Sanhedrin (The Supreme Court of the Jewish nation in Jerusalem) men like Hillel, Gamaliel, Shamai, and other great scholars and rabbis who set the path of the survival of Judaism until today. How could it be that under the shadow of these great luminaries is one of the most difficult and harsh judgmental voiced from all of Jewish history!

That is an excellent question. One of the greatest misconceptions in both Jewish and Christian circles is the assumption that Yeshua's language in Matthew 23 is unique. In fact, it is not. The prophets of Israel, the Mishnah, the Talmud, and later rabbinic literature often use equally severe language against corrupt religious leaders. The difference is that these rebukes come from within the covenant community as an act of internal criticism and moral reform.

Here are some of the strongest examples from the New Testament criticism of Judaism of their times.

The harsh criticism of the Jewish leadership that is found in the New Testament, especially in the reading of Matthew 23 – 24.

The New Testament contains several passages in which the Jewish religious establishment—particularly certain scribes, Pharisees, chief priests, elders, and lawyers—is sharply criticized. It is important to distinguish between specific leaders and the Jewish people as a whole. The New Testament itself makes this distinction: Yeshua, His apostles, and the earliest believers were all Jews, and the criticism is directed primarily at leaders whom they believed had failed in their covenant responsibilities.

Below are the principal passages.

1. Matthew 23 — The Seven (or Eight) Woes

This is the most comprehensive denunciation.

Hypocrisy. "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do." Matthew 23:2–3

Heavy Burdens. "For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers." Matthew 23:4

Love of Honor: "They do all their works to be seen by men… They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues." Matthew 23:5–6

Shutting the Kingdom: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men." Matthew 23:13

Exploiting Widows. "You devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers." Matthew 23:14 (included in the NKJV and other manuscripts following the Byzantine tradition)

False Priorities. "You blind guides…". Matthew 23:16

Neglecting Justice. "You have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." Matthew 23:23

Outward Religion. "You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence." Matthew 23:25

Whitewashed Tombs. "You are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly but inside are full of dead men's bones." Matthew 23:27

Murderers of the Prophets. "You are sons of those who murdered the prophets."

2. Matthew 23:31

Final Condemnation. "Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?" Matthew 23:33

Yeshua concludes: "The kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it." Matthew 21:43

The chief priests recognized He was speaking about them (Matthew 21:45).

Cleansing the Temple. "My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves." Matthew 21:13. Quoting Jeremiah 7.

3. Matthew 15. "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?" Matthew 15:3. Later: "In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." — Matthew 15:9

4. Mark 7. Parallel to Matthew 15. "You reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition."— Mark 7:9

5. Luke 11. Luke preserves another series of woes. Loading Burdens. "You load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers." — Luke 11:46

Tombs of the Prophets. "You build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them." — Luke 11:47

6. John 5. Yeshua accuses some leaders: "You search the Scriptures… these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me." John 5:39–40

7. John 8. Speaking to an opponent seeking to kill him. "You seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth." John 8:40

8. John 9. Following the healing of the man born blind: "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore, your sin remains." John 9:41

10. Acts 7:51 — Stephen's speech echoes the prophets. "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears. "You always resist the Holy Spirit." "Which of the prophets did your fathers do not persecute?" Acts 7:52

My Observation of similar criticism to that of the New Testament in the Old Testament prophets:

The language of the New Testament is best understood within the long tradition of Israel's prophets. Moses rebuked Israel after the golden calf, Isaiah called Jerusalem's rulers "rulers of Sodom" (Isaiah 1:10), Jeremiah denounced the Temple establishment as a "den of robbers" (Jeremiah 7:11), Ezekiel condemned the shepherds of Israel (Ezekiel 34), and Micah accused leaders of judging for bribes (Micah 3:11). Yeshua, Stephen, and Paul continue this prophetic pattern of internal covenant criticism. Their rebukes are directed at specific leaders and practices they regard as corrupt, while at the same time affirming God's enduring covenant purposes for Israel. Indeed, Paul later writes of Israel that "the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable" (Romans 11:29), reminding readers that prophetic rebuke and covenant faithfulness belong together in the biblical narrative.

Micah. "Her leaders judge for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money." — Micah 3:11

Malachi. To the priests: "You have caused many to stumble at the law." Malachi 2:8

Now the Rabbinic Literature. The rabbis did not spare their own leaders.

Mishnah Sotah 9:15. At the end of the Second Temple period: "When arrogance increased, honor departed." It continues by lamenting widespread corruption and moral decay.

Mishnah Avot 1:11. Abtalion warns: "Sages, be careful with your words, lest you incur exile."

Mishnah Avot 2:3. Rabban Gamaliel teaches: "Be cautious with those in authority, for they draw a man near only for their own benefit."

Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 57a

One of the harshest rabbinic passages. It denounces four priestly families who dominated the Temple shortly before its destruction: "Woe is me because of the house of Boethus!

Woe is me because of their clubs! Woe is me because of the house of Hanin! Woe is me because of their whisperings! Woe is me because of the house of Kathros! Woe is me because of their pens! Woe is me because of the house of Ishmael ben Phabi! Woe is me because of their fists!"

The passage explains: "For they are High Priests, their sons are treasurers, their sons-in-law are Temple administrators, and their servants beat the people with clubs." This sounds remarkably similar to Yeshua's condemnation of leaders who burden and exploit the people.

Babylonian Talmud, Yoma 9b. One of the most famous rabbinic explanations for the destruction of the Second Temple:

"The First Temple was destroyed because of idolatry, sexual immorality, and bloodshed."

But the Second Temple… because there was baseless hatred (שנאת חינם)."

The rabbis locate the cause of the catastrophe in moral and spiritual failure rather than merely political events.

Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 119b. "Jerusalem was destroyed because they did not rebuke one another."

Failure of moral leadership becomes a cause of national disaster.

Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 139a

An extraordinarily severe statement: "Jerusalem was destroyed only because scholars were despised." The discussion continues by criticizing leaders who failed to teach and uphold justice.

Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 97b. Speaking of the generation before redemption: "Truth will be absent."

The sages describe widespread corruption among judges and leaders.

Babylonian Talmud, Ketubot 105b. Regarding judges: "A judge who accepts a bribe cannot judge truthfully." This echoes Deuteronomy 16 and Isaiah 1.

Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 7b. "Any judge who renders a dishonest judgment causes the Divine Presence to depart from Israel."

Midrash Lamentations Rabbah (Proem). The destruction of Jerusalem is blamed on corrupt leadership: "Its judges were corrupt. Its priests became polluted. Its prophets spoke falsely."

This language closely resembles Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Matthew 23.

Sifre Devarim. Commenting on Deuteronomy 1:17: "A judge who twists justice is as though he destroyed the whole world. This recalls Yeshua's concern for 'the weightier matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness."

Josephus: Although not rabbinic, Flavius Josephus writes in The Jewish War with striking severity about the high-priestly aristocracy: priests became tyrants, leaders robbed the people, violence filled Jerusalem, corruption infected the Temple.

His descriptions often read as historical confirmation of both the prophetic and rabbinic critiques.

A Shared Prophetic Voice

The continuity is striking. The language of Matthew 23 is not foreign to Judaism; it belongs to a long tradition of prophetic self-criticism. Israel's prophets, the rabbis, Josephus, and Yeshua all agree that when religious leaders neglect justice, exploit the people, seek honor rather than service, or corrupt the worship of God, they become subject to the severest rebuke. This shared tradition underscores that such criticism is intended not to reject Israel but to call God's covenant people and their leaders back to faithfulness, repentance, and righteousness.

What I tried to bring to you, dear brothers and sisters, is that the criticism of Yeshua and his disciples of the Pharisees and the top leadership of the High Court of the Sanhedrin was not unusual in the period; people criticized the Religious establishment because there was a need to criticize it. The Pharisees criticized the priesthood because they made the Temple worship commercial, using the classic trade and business principles of supply and demand to raise the prices of all their services. This is also the reason for Yeshua turning the tables of the money changers in the Temple in Jerusalem. Yeshua and his disciples were not the radicals but those who commercialized everything and charged high fees for their services, taking advantage of the fact that they had the monopoly.

Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.

I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah

Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.

 Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

In the U.K.:

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

In Finland:

 ilse Luukas is having her second melanoma surgery and is asking for success in removing all the cancer. This is a repeat from 2019.

 Mauno Lemponen’s health has not changed which is a good thing. They are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

 Pray for Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami, our dear sisters.

 Pray for Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia, Victor, Aaron Tani, and Hillel.

 Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see their children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.

In Denmark:

 Cynthia M asked you to pray for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

 Hannah and her family are in Dubai. They need prayer to make plans on either leaving or stay in dubai since that's where they are currently employed.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23, he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his father’s health that is in decline.

 Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.

 Jordan Issac - a prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip, who is 89 and is caring for Pat, in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.

 Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.

 Barbra and Angie are in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 Pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. Her health is in a decline. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
