바로 이 때문에 레위기가 대부분의 기독교인들에게 무시되고 소홀히 여겨지는 것입니다. 레위기를 읽고 공부하는 것이 많은 기독교인들에게 어려운 이유는 이 책이 교회가 가르치는 것과 성령님이 가르치는 것 사이의 불일치를 드러내기 때문입니다. 레위기에는 대다수 기독교인들이 무시하는 성경의 절기 목록도 나와 있습니다. 신약성경에서 예슈아와 사도들이 유월절을 지켰다는 언급이 세 번 나오고, 고린도전서 5장에서 사도 바울이 고린도 교회에 직접 명령한 것도 한 번 나온다는 것을 기억하시나요? 이로써 모든 교회는 유월절을 지켜야 하며, 이 때문에 성령의 감동을 받은 사도가 이방인들에게 가장 강력한 성경적 명령의 형태로 제시한 것입니다. 아래 말씀에 마치 5월의 화창한 날처럼 분명하게 나와 있습니다! “너희가 자랑하는 것이 옳지 아니하도다 적은 누룩이 온 덩어리에 퍼지는 것을 알지 못하느냐 너희는 누룩 없는 자인데 새 덩어리가 되기 위하여 묵은 누룩을 내버리라 우리의 유월절 양 곧 그리스도께서 희생되셨느니라 이러므로 우리가 명절을 지키되 묵은 누룩으로도 말고 악하고 악의에 찬 누룩으로도 말고 누룩이 없이 오직 순전함과 진실함의 떡으로 하자” (고린도전서 5:6-8) 요한복음 7장에는 예슈아와 사도들이 예루살렘 성전에서 초막절을 지켰다는 내용이 나옵니다. 사실 예슈아와 사도들은 특히 숙콧(초막절)을 지키기 위해 예루살렘에 가셨는데, 초막절은 레위기의 하나님의 말씀에 따라 온 이스라엘 백성이 지켜야 할 세 가지 순례 절기 중 하나입니다. 스가랴서에서 우리는 모든 이방 민족들도 예루살렘에 와서 초막절을 지켜야 하는 날이 올 것이라는 사실을 알 수 있습니다. 스가랴 선지자에 따르면, 초막절에 예루살렘에 대표단을 보내지 않는 민족은 그 해에 비가 내리지 않을 것이라고 합니다. 제가 여러분께 강조하고 싶은 요점은 간단합니다. 레위기는 모세오경 중에서 가장 중요한 책 중 하나입니다! “네 이웃을 네 자신처럼 사랑하라”와 같이 성경 전체에서 가장 중요한 원칙들을 가르치는 책입니다. 우리 죄의 속죄라는 모든 이슈는 레위기에서 가져온 것입니다. 가톨릭 교회는 물론 대부분의 복음주의 교회가 레위기를 무시하는 것은 역사적인 교회들을 불구로 만들고 반-병자로 만든 죄악입니다. 저는 성경, 특히 신약성경이 가르치고 모범을 보이며 명령하는 바대로 교회를 회복하는 데 헌신하고 있습니다. 저는 역사적인 교회들을 파멸로 이끈 중세 시대 제도들에 대해서는 조금도 헌신하지 않습니다. 또한 유월절에 우리 주 예슈아의 죽음과 부활이 있었던 것이 결코 우연이 아니며, 특히 모세 율법에 따라 유월절에 희생되는 어린양과 하나님의 아들 예슈아의 십자가 죽음 사이의 연관성을 가리키는 예언에 근거한 것임을 지적해야 할 것 같습니다. 예슈아께서 십자가에서 하신 마지막 말씀 중 하나는 “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까!”입니다. 이는 하나님께서 십자가에서 예슈아를 버리셨기 때문이 아니라, 예슈아께서 사도들과 다른 사람들, 특히 어머니 미리암에게 시편 22편에서 하나님께서 이스라엘에 약속하신 것을 기억하라고 가리키고 계신 것이기 때문입니다. 군중 가운데 있는 이들 중 십자가에 달린 예슈아에게 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 이해해야 했던 이들에게 위대하고 고무적이며 위로가 되는 예언적인 메시지였습니다. 이제 제 개인적인 이야기를 좀 드리겠습니다. 제가 열세 살 때, 아버지는 저를 동네에 있는 세파라드계 유대교 회당의 랍비에게 데려가셨습니다. 저는 그곳에서 구두점이나 구절 번호, 장 표시가 없는 토라 두루마리를 읽는 법을 배웠습니다. 또한 랍비의 지도를 받아 안식일에 온 회중 앞에서 설교할 토라를 연구하고 설교를 준비했습니다. 제가 읽을 부분은 레위기 1장부터의 첫 번째 포션으로, 예루살렘의 현대 생활에 적용하여 본문을 해석하고, 고대의 경전을 우리 시대에 맞게 도덕적으로 해석하는 설교였습니다. 제게 가장 흥미로웠던 부분은 1장의 제사 전에 제물로 바칠 동물을 어떻게 다루는지에 대한 내용이었습니다. 제가 회당의 모든 회중 앞에서 읽었던 내용 중 일부를 소개하겠습니다: “여호와께서 회막에서 모세를 부르시고 그에게 말씀하여 이르시되 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르라 너희 중에 누구든지 여호와께 예물을 드리려거든 가축 중에서 소나 양으로 예물을 드릴지니라 그 예물이 소의 번제이면 흠 없는 수컷으로 회막 문에서 여호와 앞에 기쁘게 받으시도록 드릴지니라 그는 번제물의 머리에 안수할지니 그를 위하여 기쁘게 받으심이 되어 그를 위하여 속죄가 될 것이라 그는 여호와 앞에서 그 수송아지를 잡을 것이요 아론의 자손 제사장들은 그 피를 가져다가 회막 문 앞 제단 사방에 뿌릴 것이며 그는 또 그 번제물의 가죽을 벗기고 각을 뜰 것이요 제사장 아론의 자손들은 제단 위에 불을 붙이고 불 위에 나무를 벌여 놓고 아론의 자손 제사장들은 그 뜬 각과 머리와 기름을 제단 위의 불 위에 있는 나무에 벌여 놓을 것이며” (레위기 1:1-8) 오늘, 저는 열세 살 소년 시절, 노인들로 가득 찬, 회당의 정규 회원인 이 노인들 사이로 몇몇 아이들이 뛰어다니고 있던 이 회당에서 했던 설교를 기억하지 못합니다. 제게 가장 큰 감명을 준 것은 제단에 바쳐질 희생 제물을 다루는 방식이었습니다. 성막 문에서, 자신의 양 떼나 염소 떼에서 수컷 한 마리를 가져와야 했는데, 흠이 없어야 했습니다. 그 동물은 눈이 멀었거나 다리가 부러졌거나 다른 흠이 있어서는 안 됩니다. 온전해야 합니다. 제 논리는 “그게 왜 중요하지? 나한테는 아름답고, 사랑스럽고, 친근한 어린 양이 있고, 또 뿔이 있고 성격도 고약해서 끊임없이 뿔을 휘두르며 염소 우리 안의 다른 염소들을 괴롭히는 늙은 염소도 있지. 왜 내가 그 심술궂고 못된 늙은 염소를 데려와서 제사장에게 맡기고, 그 제사장이 그 못된 염소의 목을 베어 제단에서 태우려고 준비하는 걸 지켜보면 안 되는 거야?”와 같은 논리였을 겁니다. 세월이 흐른 지금 저는 메시아 예슈아의 제자인 우리가 모두 메시아 예슈아로부터 영원한 생명을 받은 산 제물이며, 따라서 우리의 삶은 더 이상 전적으로 우리 자신만의 것이 아니라는 것을 조금 더 이해하게 되었습니다. 열세 살 소년으로 바-미쯔바를 맞이한 저에게 가장 큰 충격은 살아있는 동물을 제물로 바쳐, 각을 뜨고, 깨끗이 씻고, 마지막으로 제단에서 불태워야 한다는 사실이었습니다. 이해하기 어려운 일이었고, 어떤 면에서는 지금도 여전히 이해하기 어렵지만, 이제는 그 어려움이 훨씬 더 커졌는데요, 언뜻 보기에 하나님께서 제 죄를 사하시기 위해 동물의 피가 필요하시다는 것, 더 나아가 저의 죄와 여러분의 죄와 인류의 죄를 사하시기 위해 메시아 예슈아처럼 완전히 죄 없는 사람의 피가 필요하신 것 같아서 입니다. 이 문제에 대한 초기 랍비 주석 중 하나는 레위기에 대한 초기 타나임 주석(미드라쉬, 주후 2~3세기) 시프라(Sifra)입니다. 마이모니데스(람밤)는 12세기에 주로 스페인 코르도바에서 살았던 의사이자 성경 학자이자 철학자였습니다. 람밤(마이모니데스)은 12세기에 이미 더 오래된 주석(미드라쉬)을 알고 있었고, 시프라 랍비 주석의 접근 방식을 선호했습니다. “제물은 오직 드리는 자가 자발적이고, 의식하고 있고, 회개하는 마음을 가졌을 때에만 열납된다.” 이는 토라와 제사장들의 희생 제사 의식을 읽는 대부분의 기독교인들이 놓치는 매우 중요한 점입니다. 감정이나 후회, 회개가 결여된 기계적인 희생 제사로는 죄를 씻어낼 수 없습니다! 희생 제사 제도 전체는 살아있는 동물을 제단으로 데려오는 피 흘리는 의식에 직접 참여하는 것을 기반으로 합니다. 죄인인 여러분은 그 자리에 함께 참여하여 도우며 여러분의 염소나 양, 어쩌면 여러분이 자라면서 함께 자란 반려동물이었을 그 동물의 생명을 앗아가는 모든 과정을 지켜보게 됩니다. 이제 여러분은 하나님과 사람 앞에서 죄를 짓고 잘못을 저질렀고, 여러분은 여러분의 염소나 양이 죽는 모습을 가까이서 직접 보면서, 그 염소나 양의 생명이 끝나는 것을 목격하고 있습니다. 여러분은 제사장들과 다른 사람들 앞에서 여러분의 죄와 잘못을 고백하면서, 여러분의 죄 때문에 생명(염소나 양이나 소나 황소)이 사라지는 것을 목격하고 있습니다. 우리는 희생 제사가 죄 사함을 위해 효과적으로 작용하려면 진심으로 회개하고 자신의 잘못과 죄를 깊이 인식하며 고백하는 데서 비롯되어야 한다는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 희생 제사는 죄인이 내면적으로 죄에서 돌아서고 죄를 짓지 않기 위해 진정한 노력을 기울이며 하나님의 명령에 순종하려는 의지를 보여줄 때에만 효력을 발휘합니다. 죄인은 자신의 죄를 대신하여 동물의 생명이 거두어지는 순간 그 자리에 있어야 합니다. 그는 동물의 머리에 손을 얹어야 하며, 그러면 그 동물의 심장 박동을 느끼게 될 것입니다. 분명 토라의 방식은 결코 기계적이지 않고, 매우 감정적이며 헌신과 진실된 마음이 수반됩니다. 그렇지 않으면 효력이 없습니다. 하나님께서는 죄인의 마음을 살피시고 죄인의 입에서 나오는 말보다 마음에 훨씬 더 민감하게 반응하십니다. 죄인이 진심으로 회개할 때, 그의 마음속에서는 이런 생각이 일어납니다: ‘이 어린양이나 염소가 바로 나야. 내가 죄를 지은 거야! 내 머리를 제단 위에 얹고 내 피로 제단의 돌들을 씻어야 해. 붉은 피를 제단 돌 위에 흘려야 해!’ 제단 위에서 드리는 희생 제사는 여러분의 죄값을 치르는 것이 아닙니다. 희생 제사는 회개의 행위이며, 여러분의 잘못과 죄가 얼마나 심각한지를 보여주는 것이며, 또한 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는, 예슈아께서 저와 여러분을 위해 생명과 피를 바치심으로써 궁극적인 회개와 죄 사함을 이루실 미래를 미리 보는 기회입니다! 저는 이것을 천국에서 일어날 일, 그리고 궁극적으로 큰 백보좌 앞에 모여 모세의 노래(출애굽기 15장)와 저의 죄와 여러분의 죄와 세상의 죄를 지고 가신 하나님의 어린양의 노래를 부를 무리 앞에 펼쳐질 거대한 스크린에 상영될 것에 대한 예표라고 부르고 싶습니다. 람밤(마이모니데스)의 저서 『방황하는 자를 위한 안내서』에서 그는 레위기 1-2장에 나오는 내용과 관련된 흥미로운 생각들을 제시합니다. 친애하는 형제님들, 저는 이 생각들 중 몇 가지를 여러분과 나누고 싶습니다. 여러분이 레위기 1-2장을 다시 읽으시면, 하나님께서 우리 메시아이신 예슈아께 행하신 일과 하나님 아버지께서 왜 예슈아가 예루살렘에서 로마 십자가에서 죽는 것을 허락하셨는지 이해하는 데 이 내용이 얼마나 중요한지 깨닫게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 고대 세계에서 대부분의 인류는 동물을 제물로 바치는 제사를 지냈을 뿐만 아니라, 사람을, 심지어는 자신의 자녀까지도 제물로 바쳤습니다. 성경에서도 이스라엘의 이웃 나라인 가나안 사람들이 몰록과 다른 가나안 우상들에게 산 사람과 자기 자녀를 제물로 바쳤다는 것을 읽을 수 있습니다. 애굽(이집트)과 앗수르(앗시리아)도 비슷한 관습을 가지고 있었습니다. 이러한 관습은 전 세계(이집트, 가나안, 메소포타미아)에 존재했으며, 아메리카 대륙의 여러 민족들도 지구 반대편에도 이러한 관습이 있다는 사실을 모른 채 행했습니다. 하나님께서는 죄인이 자신의 죄가 얼마나 심각한지 깨닫게 하시기 위해, 죄의 심각성과 그것이 하나님의 세상에 어떤 결과를 가져올지를 보여주시기 위해 매우 가혹하고 혹독한 방법을 사용하실 필요가 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 사람들이 자기 행위의 심각성을 깨닫지 못한다고 해서 희생 제사를 즉시 폐기하지는 않으셨습니다. 오히려 자신의 아들 예슈아를 세상에 보내시어, 나무 십자가에서 가장 잔혹한 죽음 중 하나를 맞게 하심으로써 우리의 죄를 자신에게로 돌리셨습니다. 하나님께서는 자신의 창조물에 대한 사랑으로 아담(인간)의 원형을 세상에 보내시어 우리 인류를 정화시키셨습니다. 람밤의 도덕적 입장 “왜 내 죄 때문에 무고한 동물을 죽이는가?” • 위 질문에 대해 람밤 마이모니데스는 이렇게 답할 것입니다: “이것은 동물의 죽음을 통한 정의에 관한 것이 아니다. 이것은 인간을 죄와 우상숭배에서 멀어지게 하는 훈련에 관한 것이다.” 람밤에게 있어 희생 제사 제도 전체는 죄인으로 하여금 죄는 죽음이며, 가혹하고, 혹독하며, 먼저 자신이 기르는 동물의 생명(재정적 손실)을 잃게 하고, 마침내 “하나님께서 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 그의 독생자를 보내셨다…”는 것을 깨닫게 하는 교육 체계이자 과도기적 단계였습니다. 예슈아께서는 여러분과 저를 위해, 그리고 우리의 죄와 연약함을 위해 자신의 생명을 내어주셨습니다. 이는 한편으로는 우리의 죄가 얼마나 심각한지, 다른 한편으로는 죄인인 우리를 향한 그분의 사랑이 얼마나 큰지를 증명하기 위함이었습니다. 예슈아의 죽음은 창조의 시작부터 이미 계획되어 있던 우주적인 사건이었습니다. 예슈아께서는 아담 창조 이전부터 존재하셨으므로, 창조 세계가 궁극적으로 올바르게 완성되어 의와 죄, 사랑과 미움, 순수와 불순, 선과 악을 분별하는 인류가 탄생하도록 하는 이 위대한 우주적 계획에 아버지와 함께 참여하셨습니다. 두 발로 걷고 칼과 포크로 음식을 먹는 지적인 포유류인 우리가 누구인지, 무엇인지, 그리고 우리 주변의 자연 세계와 어떻게 공존해야 하는지, 가장 중요하게는 서로 어떻게 어울려 살아가야 하는지를 배우기를 바라는 마음으로 레위기가 쓰였습니다. 그래서 레위기에는 우리가 받아들이고 삶에 적용하기 어려운 구절들이 있는 것이 사실입니다. 네, 그리고 레위기에는 “네 이웃을 네 자신처럼 사랑하라!”와 같은 중요한 가르침이 있습니다. 또한 레위기에는 결혼에 관한 규정과 사회 정의에 관한 규정이 있는데, 이는 바벨론, 앗수르, 심지어 그리스와 로마 같은 거대 제국의 법과 규정보다 훨씬 뛰어납니다! 그런데 레위기에는 하나님과 동행하며 하나님의 사랑이라는 큰 축복을 받아들이고 사용하는 사람들을 위한 축복도 있다는 사실을 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 그 사랑은 바로 우리 죄를 대신 짊어지도록 자기 아들 예슈아를 이 세상에 보내신 것입니다. 예슈아께서는 온 인류를 위한 속죄일 희생양이십니다. 그분을 우리의 형제로 받아들이고, 단순히 교회나 회당에 가는 것만 아니라, 사랑과 돌봄의 모든 체계, 즉 한 사람(그리스인도, 앗수르인도, 바사(페르시아)인도, 아랍인도 아닌), 한 유대인의 고난을 통해 세상 죄를 없애신 하나님의 속죄와 사랑을 기억하기로 다짐합시다. 그 한 유대인은 세상 죄를 사할 수 있는 그 어떤 희생 제물과도 비교할 수 없는 희생을 치르신, 바로 하나님의 아들이시며 사람이신 예슈아십니다!

by Joseph Shulam Torah Leviticus 1:1-5:26 Haftarah Isaiah 43:21-44:23 New Testament Hebrews 10:1-18 This Torah portion that will be read around the world in every normal synagogue is actually my Bar-Mitzvah Torah portion that, at the age of 13, I stood in the Sephardic Synagogue on Yehuda Street at the corner of Hebron Road and read this Torah portion Vayikra – in English it means "He called or read…". The Hebrew Bible does not have the names of the books that carry the meaning of the reading of the content of the reading portion. The names of the books in the Hebrew Bible are the first words of the book. The reading of the Torah starts the book of Leviticus. I am sad to say that in the Christian settings and even in many messianic congregations in the world, and especially Evangelical churches, the books of the Torah in general are neglected and mainly ignored. Here is a kind of summary of the use of the book of Leviticus in the New Testament. Leviticus teachings are some of the most important in the Bible: 1) Sin requires atonement! 2) Blood makes atonement (Lev 17:11). Substitutionary sacrifice exists only in the book of Leviticus. The fulfillment of this important principle is brought to the New Testament in Hebrews 9 – 10, Romans 3:25, and 1 Corinthians 5:7. 3) Without Leviticus: There is no framework to understand the death of Jesus and the atonement that comes to the world through the substitutionary sacrifice of Yeshua on the cross! 4) The whole concept of the priesthood comes from the book of Leviticus. The idea of mediation between God and Man comes from the book of Leviticus by the Aaronic priesthood. The idea that Yeshua, our Messiah, is also a king and a priest comes from the book of Leviticus! See Hebrews 4–7 → Yeshua is the Messiah and the High Priest of a new order! This entire argument of Hebrews depends on Leviticus. 5) The idea of separation between the Holy and the mundane is the one main idea of the book of Leviticus: "Be holy, for I the LORD am Holy!" In the New Testament, we find this idea in 1 Peter 1:15-16 and 2 Corinthians 6:16-18. The ideas in the New Testament about the relationship between Ethics and Holiness is rooted in the book of Leviticus. See: 1 Peter 1:15-16 and 2 Corinthians 6:16 – 18. 6) The teaching of what is clean and unclean comes totally from Leviticus. See first Acts 10 (Peter's vision on the rooftop in Jaffa) and understand the text of Mark 7:14-23. "There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius!" And when he observed him, he was afraid and said, "What is it, lord?" So he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do." And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa." (Acts 10:1-8 NKJV) I don't know how long after the resurrection of Yeshua was this event in Jaffa, but it is surely after the death and crucifixion and resurrection of Yeshua. Peter is on the rooftop in Jaffa, overlooking to the west of him the beautiful Mediterranean Sea shore. The Sun is sinking into the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Peter was hungry. Dinner was not yet served in the home of Simon and there comes a full smorgasbord of wonderful non-kosher Italian Salami and a good chunk of ham and maybe also a BLT sandwich with a cold glass of good Belgian beer! All this is not enough, and on top of it all, a voice from heaven comes and tells Peter, " Eat it, it is for eating! And what does Peter answer this voice from heaven?" This is why the book of Leviticus is so ignored and neglected by most of Christianity. Reading and studying the book of Leviticus is difficult for many Christians because it brings the discrepancy between what the churches teach and what the Spirit of God teaches in the book of Leviticus. In the book of Leviticus, we have also the catalogue of the biblical holidays that are also ignored by the majority of Christianity. Do you remember that in the New Testament we have three times mentioned that the Yeshua and the Apostles celebrated the Passover and one time a direct command by the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5 for the church in Corinth and by this in all the churches they must celebrate the Passover and all the reasons why are given by the inspired Apostle to the Gentiles in the strongest form of biblical commands. Here you have it as clear as a sunny day in the month of May! "Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore, purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." (1 Corinthians 5:6-8 NKJV) We have the text in the gospel of John chapter 7 about the keeping of the feast of Tabernacles by Yeshua himself and his apostles in the temple in Jerusalem. In fact, Yeshua and his apostles came to Jerusalem especially to keep the feast of Sukkot that is one of the feasts commanded by the word of God in the book of Leviticus to be one of the three pilgrimage feasts that all Israel must keep. In the book of Zechariah, we find out that the day will come when all the nations of the pagans also will have to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Sukkoth (Tabernacles). According to the prophet Zechariah, any nation that does not send representatives to be represented in Jerusalem for the feast of Sukkoth – Tabernacles will have no rain on that year. The point that I am trying to bring home for you is simple – the book of Leviticus is one of the most important books in the Law of Moses! It is the book that has such important teachings of the most important principles in the whole Bible like "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." The whole issue of atonement from our sins is taken from the book of Leviticus. Ignoring the book of Leviticus by most evangelical churches and, of course, the Catholic Churches is a sin that crippled the historical churches and made them semi -invalid. I am committed to the restoration of the church to what the Bible and especially the New Testament teaches and brings examples and commands. I have zero commitment to the medieval institutions that turned the historical churches into the temples' doom. I should note that the death and resurrection of Yeshua our Lord on the Passover is not accidental at all – it is based on prophetic predictions, especially pointing out the connection between the lambs sacrificed according to the Law of Moses on the Passover and the death on the cross of Yeshua, the Son of God. One of the last statements that Yeshua spoke on the cross is: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!" It is not because God has forsaken Yeshua on the cross, but because Yeshua was pointing to the apostles and others, and especially Miriam, his mother, to remember God has promised to Israel in Psalm 22. A great, encouraging, and comforting prophetic message for those in the crowd that needed to understand what was happening to him hanging on the cross. Now, on a personal note. At the age of 13, my father took me to the Rabbi of the Sephardic Synagogue in our neighbourhood, and I was trained to read from the Torah Scroll without punctuation and without verse numbers or chapters marked. I was also guided by the Rabbi to make a study and a sermon to preach to the whole congregation on Shabbat. My reading was from the first portion of reading from Leviticus chapter 1, and then interpreted the text with practical notes for our more modern life in Jerusalem, and moralised the text. ancient text for our own days. What was most interesting for me was the texts in chapter one that speak about the treatment of the sacrificial animal before the sacrifice. Here is a small example from the text that I read in front of the whole public of the synagogue: "Now the LORD called to Moses, and spoke to him from the tabernacle of meeting, saying, "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of the livestock—of the herd and of the flock. "If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD. Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. He shall kill the bull before the LORD; and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. And he shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into its pieces. The sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar and lay the wood in order on the fire. Then the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat in order on the wood that is on the fire upon the altar;" (Leviticus 1:1-8 NKJV) Today, I do not remember my sermon that I gave as a 13-year-old boy, in a synagogue full of old people with a few children running around between the old folk that are regular members of the synagogue. What impressed me most was the whole treatment of the animal itself that is going to be sacrificed on the altar. There at the gate of the tabernacle, you bring a sheep or a goat from your own flock, and it has to be a male animal, and it has to be without blemish. The animal can't be blind or have a broken leg or have some other kind of blemish. The animal has to be perfect. My own logic would have been, " What does it matter? I have a beautiful, cuddly, and friendly lamb. I also have some old goat that is not friendly and has horns and it constantly seeks ways to use his horns and disturbs the other goats in the goat pen. Why can't I bring that old goat that is cantankerous and mean and hand it to the priest and watch how the priest and he cuts the mean goat's head off and prepares it for the burning on the altar? Well here now years later I understand a little more that we are all as disciples of Yeshua the Messiah, living sacrifices that have received life eternal from our Messiah Yeshua and therefore our lives are no longer belonging solely to ourselves. The big shock was for me as a Bar-Mitzvah body 13 years old, the whole issue of needing to offer living animals and cut them and clean them and in the end burn them on the altar. It was something that was hard to understand and, in a way, it is still hard for me to understand, but now the difficulty is much bigger and seems at first glance that God is in need of animal blood to forgive my sins or even worst in need of human blood of a totally innocent person like Yeshua the Messiah to forgive my sin and your sin and the sins of humanity in general. An early Rabbinical commentary on this issue is Sifra, an early tannaitic commentary (Midrash, 2nd–3rd century CE) on Leviticus. Maimonides (Rambam) a medical doctor and a Bible scholar and a philosopher who lived in the 12th Century mainly in Cordoba Spain. Rambam (Maimonides) knew the more ancient commentary (Midrash) from the 12th Century and liked the approach of the Sifra rabbinical commentary. "The offering is accepted only when the person is willing, conscious, and repentant." This is a very important point that most Christians that read the Torah and the sacrificial priestly practices miss. There is no mechanical devoid of feeling and remorse and repentance and sacrifice of an animal that can clean up your sins! The whole sacrificial system is based in the personal participation with all the bloody ceremony that is used to bring a living animal to the altar, and you, the sinner, are there participating and helping and seeing the whole practice of taking the life of your goat or sheep, maybe an animal that was your pet when you were going up. Now you have sinned and done wrong before God and man, and you are there personally close by within sight of the killing of your goat or sheep and you are a witness to the end of the life of your goat or sheep and you are confessing your sins and your mistakes in front of the priests and may be others and you are a witness to the loss of a life (of a goat or a sheep or a cow or bull) because of your sin. We must remember that the sacrifice works effectively for the forgiveness of your sins only if your repentance is sincere and deeply motivated by confession and awareness of your mistakes and sins. Sacrifice works only if it represents of the person's inner turning away from sin and taking real steps to stop sinning and turning to obedience through God's commands. The sinner has to be there when the life of the animal is taken for his sins. He has to lay his hands on the head of the animal, and he will feel the heartbeat of the animal. For sure, the Torah way is not mechanical, but it is very emotional and carries with it commitment and sincerity of heart other wise it does not work. God investigates the heart of the sinner and reacts to the heart much more than to the mouth of the sinner. When the sinner is truly repentant, what goes on in his heart is something like this: This lamb or goat is really me. I sinned! I should be there with my head on the altar and my blood washing the stones of the altar, bleeding red blood on the stones of the altar! The sacrifice on the altar is not a payment for your sins. The sacrifice is an act of repentance, a demonstration of how serious your mistakes and sins are, and a chance from God that foresees the future of the ultimate repentance and cleansing of our sins by the ultimate sacrifice of Yeshua's life and blood for me and you! It is what I would call a foreshadowing of what is happening in heaven and what will ultimately be playing on the big, big screen for the crowed that will be gathered in front of the great white throne shining the song of Moses (Exodus chapter 15) and the song of the Lamb of God that took away the my sins and your sins and the sins of the world. In Rambam's books "A Guide for the Perplexed." Rambam (Maimonides) brings some interesting ideas connected with the description of Leviticus chapters 1-2. I would like to share some of these ideas with you, my dear brothers, because when you read the book of Leviticus again, you will remember how important it is for our understanding of what God did with Yeshua, our Messiah, and why God the Father allowed Yeshua to die on the Roman cross in Jerusalem. In the ancient world, most of humanity was used to worship through sacrifices of animals, but also human beings, sometimes even their own children. We can read this also in the Bible that some of the neighbors of Israel in the land of Canaan offered living human beings and their own children to the Moloch and other Canaanite idols. The Egyptians had similar practices and so did the Assyrians. This practice was universal (Egypt, Canaan, Mesopotamia); all had such practices. But also, nations in the Americas had such practices without knowing that they existed on the other side of the world. Because of the need for the human sinner to realize how serious his sin really is, it was necessary in God's economy to use this very hard and harsh way to prove how serious our sins are and what consequences they carry in God's world. Therefore, God did not abolish sacrifice at once because people could not grasp the seriousness of their actions. And in the sending of his own son Yeshua to the world and allowing him to die one of the cruelest deaths possible on the wooden cross God redirected our sins toward Himself. He sent the original Adam (human being) to the world, motivated by love for His creation, to purify us, the human race. Rambam's Moral Position "Why kill an innocent animal for my sins?" • To the above question, Rambam "Maimonides" would say: "It is not about justice through the animal's death. It is about training human beings away from sinning and from idolatry. For Rambam, the whole sacrificial system was a pedagogical system, a transitional stage to bring the sinner to the realization that sin is death, and it is hard, and it is harsh and it will cost you first a life of one of your animals (financially), and finally "For God so loved the world that He sent his only begotten son…. To give his life for you and me and our sins and our weaknesses and to prove on the one hand the seriousness of our sins and on the other hand His great love for us sinners. The death of Yeshua was a cosmic event that was already in action from the very beginning of creation. Since Yeshua was pre-existent to the creation of Adam, Yeshua was in partnership with the Father in this great universal project to ensure that Creation in the end will work and will produce a race of people that knows the difference between righteousness and sin, between love and hate, between pure and un-pure, between good and evil. With the hope that we, the intelligent mammals that walk on two and eat with a knife and fork, would learn who we are and what we are and how we should live with the natural world around us, and most importantly with each other. So, yes, the book of Leviticus has some difficult texts to accept and internalize into our own lives. Yes, and it has important teaching like "you should love your neighbor as yourself!" And the book of Leviticus has the rules of marriage and the rules of social justice that are miles above the laws and rules of such great empires like Babylon and Assyria and even Greece and Rome! But we must not forget that the book of Leviticus also has blessings for those who walk with God and accept and use the great blessing of God's love that sent His son Yeshua to this world to take away our sins upon Himself. He, Yeshua, is the scapegoat of the day of atonement for all humanity. Let us embrace Him as our brother and make a commitment that we are not only going to church or synagogue, but that we will remember the whole system of love and care – God's atonement and love that can take away the sins of the world through the suffering of one (not Greek not Assyrian or Persian or Arab) MAN – ONE JEW and made him a sacrifice like no other that can forgive the sins of the world, Yeshua Son of God and Man! Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)
