이번 안식일 토라 포션에서 우리는 아브라함 이야기의 시작을 읽게 됩니다. 창세기 나머지 부분은 사실 우리에게 아브라함과 그의 성품과 그의 강점 및 약점과 그 이후의 가족에 대한 전반적인 그림을 주기 위해 쓰였습니다.

하나님께서는 왜 노인 아브라함을 노파 사라와 함께 완전 난장판인 땅으로 보내셨을까요? 가나안 땅은 결코 조용하지도 재미있거나 유쾌하지도 않은 곳입니다. 이곳은, 장 문제가 있는 사람이 속옷을 자주 갈아입듯이, 손과 정부가 자주 바뀌는 곳입니다.

아브라함은 유대인이 아니었습니다. 그는 메소포타미아/바벨론에서 나고 자랐습니다. 유대인은 훨씬 나중에 야곱이 죽은 후 히브리 자손이 가나안 땅에 정착하기까지는 역사의 무대에 들어오지 않았습니다. 이번 토라 포션은 창세기 11장에서 시작되어야 하지만, 아브라함과 그의 아내 사라와 그의 조카 롯과 그의 가족과 함께 시작됩니다. 하나님께서는 하란이라는 성읍에서 존경받는 가문의 자손인 아브라함에게 나타나셨습니다.

아브라함 이야기 중에서 가장 중요한 단어는 사실 작고 그다지 인기 없는 단어입니다. 히브리어에서 이 단어, הנני 는 “히네니”라고 발음됩니다. 이 단어는 히브리어 성경에 178회 밖에 나오지 않습니다. 이 작은 히브리어 단어의 의미는 “제가 여기 있습니다”이고, 이 단어를 어떻게 정의하느냐에 따라 다양한 모습(본문의 형식, 발음, 맥락)으로 나옵니다. 보수적 학계의 수치상 토라에 정확히 הִנֵּנִי 라는 형태로 나오는 것은 7회입니다. 횟수가 많을수록 더 다양한 형태 혹은 용례가 있다는 것을 나타냅니다(예, 접미사 형태, 여러 가지 발음, 발음 용이성). 여기에서 중요한 요점은 아브라함이 하나님께 정확히 몇 번 הנני (“제가 여기 있습니다 – 주께서 제게 무엇이라 명하시든지 할 준비가 되어 있습니다.”)라고 말했는가가 아닙니다.

하나님께서는 아브라함에게 그의 아들을 데리고 가서 그를 인신 제사 드리라고 말씀하셨습니다: 네, 주께서 제게 제 아들을 제물로 바치라 요구하셨습니다! 저는 기꺼이 그렇게 하여 주의 말씀에 따르겠습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 1 November, 2025

The Torah reading is from the portion named Lech-Lecha. The story of Abraham leaving Babylon and setting his face toward Jerusalem, toward the land of Canaan!

In our Torah reading this next Shabbat, we will be reading the beginning of the story of Abraham, and all the rest of the book of Genesis is actually written to give us a well-rounded picture of Abraham, his character, his strong points, his weak points, and his family after him.

This Shabbat’s reading is for me one of the most essential Torah readings of the entire year. It has the beginning of the beginning. God calls Abram and his wife Sara, and around 1000 men between the ages of 20 – 50, the souls that he made in Haran, to leave their city and go to the land of Canaan. The question that I have always had as an unsolved problem is why God moved Abraham from a successful and prosperous city in Mesopotamia to a land that has six competing warring nations that came from three continents?

Why did God send old man Abraham with his old woman Sarah to such a land that is a total Balagan? The Land of Canaan was anything but quiet and quaint or pleasant. It was a place that changed hands and governments like a person with stomach problems changes underwear.

Abraham was not a Jew – he was born and raised in Mesopotamia/Babylon. Jews didn’t come into the stage of history until much later, after Jacob’s death and the settlement of the Hebrew children in the land of Canaan. Our Torah reading ought to start in Genesis chapter 11, but it begins with Abraham, Sarah, his wife, Lot, his nephew, and his family. God appears to Abraham, who is the son of an honorable family in the city of Haran.

The narrative about Abraham comes after an elaborate short discourse of what happened after the great flood of Noah. Here is a brief list of the reaction of humanity after the flood. I don’t have any idea of how long after he flood our biblical narrative was written. But, from the text itself, it is easy to understand that it was many, many years after the flood to the calling of Abraham.

Abraham was to leave his place of birth with his family and over 318 adults aged between 20 and 50 who were members of Abraham’s camp. Obviously, Abraham was a wealthy man with a large camp of servants and soldiers, and a wife who was not able to have children!

God chooses this man and his clan to be the father of all the faithful throughout human history. Just take this into consideration: The Jews first attribute their origin to Abraham and his family. Christians worldwide attribute their relationship to God throughAbraham. The Muslims also attribute the origins of their faith to Abraham. When calculating the numbers, you see that more than half of the world’s population traces its religious origin to Abraham and his family. So, this makes Abraham not only our father but the father of the faithful to one God of most of the world. This fact is enough to cause us to do our best to understand this man called Abraham!

Jewish literature through the centuries has done everything possible to try to analyze, study, interpret, and comment on the person called Abraham and his family, and the kind of faith and relationship that he had with God and with people. This prayer list is too limited to really understand and analyze the personality and character of Abraham. I can say a few things on this platform of the Jerusalem prayer list about Abraham and his faith:

1) Abraham was not perfect and was not sinless.

2) Abraham really loved Sarah, his wife, and she loved him so much that she actually gave him an Egyptian female servant that she had for herself to have sex with Abraham and birth a son! The name of the Egyptian servant was Hagar. She gave old man Abraham a son called Ishmael – “God heard Abraham’s plea for a son!

3) Abraham was a sinner like all of us! But he was also faithful, honest, intelligent, and uncompromising when it came to God and His commands.

The most important word in all of Abraham’s story is actually a tiny and not-so-popular word. In Hebrew, this word is pronounced “HiNeNi” . הנני This word appears in the Hebrew bible only 178 times. The English meaning of this small Hebrew word is (“hinēnî” = “Here I am”), which appears with varying counts depending on how one defines the term (textual form, vocalization, context). The conservative scholastic figure is seven occurrences for the precise form הִנֵּנִי in the Torah. The larger numbers reflect broader forms or usages (e.g., the suffix-form, variant vocalizations, and pronouncing readiness). The critical point in this is not exactly the number of times that Abraham says to God הנני - = “Here I am - ready to do whatever you command me.”

God says to Abraham to take his son and offer him as a human sacrifice: Yes, you ask me to sacrifice my son! I am ready to do it and obey you.

In chapter 18 of Genesis, when the three angels appear and eat lunch with Abraham and tell him that Sodom will be destroyed, Abraham argues with these three that look like angels, but one of them is actually called Jehovah. Abraham does not accept the option that Sodom will be destroyed. He argues with the angel (that is, actually God). He negotiates the possibility that God will cancel his verdict on Sodom if 10 righteous men are found in that wicked city. If 10 righteous men are found in Sodom, God would not destroy it.

Now, in the case of God asking Abraham to offer his only true son, Isaac, and sacrifice him on the altar, Abraham negotiates with the three angels, especially with the one who is called God, like an Arab or Armenian merchant in the market of the old city of Jerusalem. But when it comes to his only true son, Isaac’s sacrifice, Abraham goes on to obey God without negotiation and builds an altar for the sacrifice of Isaac.

Do you realize that this was the last conversation that God had with Abraham? The reason for this harsh cutting off of the communication between God and Abraham was because Abraham didn’t try to negotiate on behalf of his son Isaac’s sacrifice, proceeded to build the altar, and put the wood that Isaac carried on his shoulder, like Yeshua carried his own cross on his shoulder. The Rabbis actually noticed this and mentioned it in their commentaries.

We will have plenty more weeks to discuss Abraham and his actions, his faith, and his obedience to God in a variety of situations. For now, I am satisfied with this dramatic biblical text that influenced the rest of the Bible, including the story of Yeshua and the cross. We all need to be judicious and consider whom we obey and whose voice we hear when we read the Word of God and seek ways to follow and fulfill our calling as disciples of Yeshua, our Rabbi and Savior.

Please continue to pray for Israel and the very complex situation that it is trapped in right now, both internally and externally.

Please pray for me and my health too, and for the trip to Brazil to participate in our yearly congress that will most likely have close to 1000 people from all around Brazil and other countries in Southern and Central America, and probably from Europe also, and indeed from Israel and the United States.

Don’t forget our soldiers and also the situation in Gaza and in the whole Middle East.

The Prayer List

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 update Joseph Shulam - dads back in Nashville, TN. Please give a prayer for thanksgiving for his safe arrival

 Ilana Hanhijärvi is a dear sister who is 99 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

 Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 Pray for a dear sister named Claudia Rita Souze Arau. She has cancer and needs God’s healing hands to touch her with healing.

 Pray for Pastor T.J. in Taiwan.

 Pray for Deborah Ruth, a dear sister from China.

 Pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan.

 Tony Tam, his wife Luisa, and his son Marco need special prayers for their situation.

 I ask for prayers for divine intervention in the lives of my sister-in-law “A” and her husband, my brother, “G” and their son. l am begging the Eternal for healing and salvation for this family.

 Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

 Ray H. is having a similar health issue like Marcia Shulam did where id blood pressure drops when we stands up.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.

 I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.

 Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 update Bills received news in his last cancer scan that it has returned. Please keep him and Jill in your prayers as they begin a new round of treatments. I spoke with bill on the phone and ask that you pray his body will react well to the treatments and the side effects will be minimal.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
