Although the exact identity of the Nicolaitans is not known, many scholars and early Believers understand it to be a form of spiritual compromise, mixing pagan practices with faith. Interestingly, the meaning of the word Nicolaitans is broken down to; Nikos = victory, control, rule (the brand name Nike comes from this) and Laos = people. This theme directly parallels the events of Parashat Balac (Torah portion Balac) where Israel entered into sin through the counsel of Balaam. Balac, the King of Moab hires / summons Balaam (a non-Israelite prophet) to curse Israel. God prevents Balaam from doing so but through Balaam's advise to Balac, Israel is seduced with idolatry and sexual immorality. Numbers 25:1-3 & 31:16 In Revelation 2:14-15 Yeshua rebukes the Believers in Pergamon for holding to the doctrine of Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel and for those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. The spiritual parallel of both Balaam and Nicolaitans are: 1. Leading God's people into a spiritual compromise. 2. They both involve mixing holiness with corruption. 3. The Nicolaitans through their doctrine, manipulated the Word of God, in a way which gave license to living outside of a lifestyle of holiness. As followers in Yeshua, we are called to be holy and separate from the patterns of the world. Just as Israel is called to be a Nation pure and holy before God, so too are we the Body of Messiah called. We are called to reject the spirit of compromise no matter how convenient it would be for us to do otherwise. The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is essentially the spirit of Balaam repeated in the new covenant, leading Believers into compromise. The warning is clear, do not follow false teaching and do not let spiritual compromise take root. Yeshua calls His people to faithfulness, purity and to stand boldly in truth. |
