Two references to rejoicing can be found regarding Succoth in Deuteronomy 16:13-17. 13 “You shall observe the Feast of Tabernacles seven days, when you have gathered from your threshing floor and from your winepress. 14 And you shall rejoice in your feast, and 15… because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you surely rejoice. Another name for Succoth is Hag Ha-Asif, the Feast of Ingathering, Exodus 23:16, …. the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field. There are four things which take place during this ingathering: an offering is made to God, a measure is given to the poor, the orphans and widows, some is set aside for winter and a portion is sown for the next harvest. The main point when giving, is that it is done joyfully; realizing that up until then, God has been our provider and we must trust and have faith that He will continue to provide. Succoth is also one of the three pilgrimage festivals, Shalosh Regalim; when the Nation of Israel is called to go up to Jerusalem, bringing their thank offering to God; their tithe. In John 7 we read of an encounter between Yeshua and His brothers during Succoth. Yeshua’s brothers are provoking Him to go up to Jerusalem; only in a negative way. We see in these verses that even though Yeshua was the oldest brother; they did not give Him the respect normally given to the first born. We read how after His brothers had gone Yeshua went up to Jerusalem alone and in secret. However, what did He see, what was happening there during this season? The priests (Levites) would come down from the Temple to the Pool of Siloam. There was music, singing and celebrating as they filled the pitchers with water. Then the priests would return to the Temple and pour the water on the altar and by the edge of the temple. This was done throughout the seven days; when the ceremony was completed, they would ask God to pour out water (rain) over the dry land. This all took place during the season of change; the beginning of autumn. Zechariah 14:16-18 makes the consequences or judgement in the last days, of not observing the Feast of Tabernacles by coming to Jerusalem and joyfully bringing our tithes clear; no rain. In this context we can understand the lack of rain to also be an absence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Yeshua speaks about whoever believes in Him, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water (John 7:37-39). Just as the land of Israel is a dry and thirsty land with a climate of not much rain; so too are the hearts of man. We the believers in Yeshua, thirst in our hearts for the Word of God, Yeshua. In a way, He takes our dry heart and fills it with Himself, pouring out rivers of living water, healing rain by His Spirit over a dry and weary land and people. When we are moving In Him; we see with spiritual eyes. Our prayer this Succoth is that the eyes of the Lord which run to and fro throughout the whole earth, will show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. 2 Chronicles 16:9
