우리는 이상하고 미친 시대에 살고 있습니다. 전 세계적으로 코로나바이러스-19 전염병은 수그러들지 않고 있습니다. 이것은 사람 대양을 휩쓸며 사람 해안을 때리며 크고 작은 나라들을 크게 황폐케 하는 악의 물결 같습니다.

수십억의 사람들이 이 질병 자체로 영향을 받기도 하고 경제 폭망으로 영향을 받기도 했습니다. 수십만 명의 사람들이 직장을 잃었고 회사가 파산의 위협에 처해 있습니다. 이것은 언론에서 “팬데믹”이라고 부릅니다. 성경 용어로는 염병이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다.

성경에는 염병이 몇 번 있습니다. 영어성경에 “염병”이라는 단어는 103회 사용되었으며, 매번 그 염병은 누군가 혹은 온 나라가 하나님께 돌아서서 그들의 죄를 자백하고 회개할 때 끝났습니다.

이번 주 토라 포션은 “핀하스(비느하스)” 민수기 25:10~29:40이며, 선지자의 글에서 읽는 부분(하프타라)은 열왕기상 18:46~19:21입니다. 신약성경에서는 요한복음 2:13-22을 읽습니다.

저는 비느하스 이야기를 좋아합니다. 제가 비느하스를 좋아하는 이유는 저 자신이 그의 성격과 동일시하기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 법(모든 나라의 모든 법)이 있는 이유는 일반 대중이 질서 있는 사회를 유지하도록 돕기 위한 것입니다. 그러나 질서 있는 사회에는 “정치적으로 옳음”을 거부하며, 고정관념을 벗어나 해야 할 일을 하는 용기와 정신을 가진 그런 사람들에게 탈출구가 있어야 합니다.

고정관념을 벗어나 옳은 일을 하기 위해서 필요하다면 기꺼이 감옥에라도 가고자 하는 사람들. 타고나기를 반항적인 사람들, 둑이 무너질까봐 손가락으로 막았던 네덜란드 소년, 부모님과 함께 왕의 새 옷을 보려고 길에 서 있다가 모두가 왕의 옷의 천과 금단추와 셔츠의 커프스단추가 아름답다고 말할 때 큰 소리로 “그런데 엄마, 임금님이 벌거벗었어!” 말한 어린 소년.

진짜 실체를 보고자 하고 그것을 스스럼없이 말하기를 두려워하지 않는 이런 어린 소년과 같은 사람이 언제나 있어야 합니다. 대체로 이 어린 소년 같은 사람들은 그다지 인기가 없는데요, 그들은 그들을 둘러싼 사회의 다수에 반대하여 혼자 서 있기 때문입니다.

그들이 인기가 없는 것은 “르 델뤼쥬 아프레 므와”(내가 죽은 뒤에 홍수가 나든 말든 무슨 상관이야.) 태도로 안락하게 살기로 하는 사회 분위기로 인해 보기를 마다하거나 선택적으로 보고 듣기 때문에 다른 사람들은 보지 못하는 것들을 그들은 보기 때문입니다.

비느하스 이야기가 무엇입니까? 이것은 지난 주 토라 포션 민수기 22~25장과 바로 연결되어 있습니다. 국제적으로 유명한 마법사며 거짓 선지자며 탐욕스러운 발람은 이스라엘을 저주하라고 초청받았습니다. 모압왕 발락은 발람을 초청하면서 이스라엘을 저주하는 댓가로 그에게 큰 부를 약속했습니다.

또 한 편으로 발람은 발락한테서 보상을 받고 싶기도 합니다. 그는 두 세계 모두에 살면서 두 세계로부터 제일 좋은 것을 얻고 싶어 합니다. 마지막 번에 발람은 발락에게 이길 조언을 해주는데요, 당신 나라의 아름다운 젊은 여자들을 보내 이스라엘 남자들을 꾀라고 합니다.

“이스라엘이 싯딤에 머물러 있더니 그 백성이 모압 여자들과 음행하기를 시작하니라 그 여자들이 자기 신들에게 제사할 때에 이스라엘 백성을 청하매 백성이 먹고 그들의 신들에게 절하므로 이스라엘이 바알브올에게 가담한지라 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 진노하시니라.” - 민수기 25:1-3

이스라엘 남자들이 모압 딸들과 행한 음행과 우상숭배에 대한 하나님의 반응은 뭐였습니까? 주님께서는 모세에게 각 지파 수령들에게 명하여 이 끔찍한 바알 브올 숭배에 가담한 남자들을 잡아 와 죽이되 태양을 향하여 목매어 달아 이 가증한 죄를 저지르지 않은 모든 사람이 보고 따라하지 않게 하라고 명하셨습니다.

“이스라엘 자손의 온 회중이 회막 문에서 울 때에 이스라엘 자손 한 사람이 모세와 온 회중의 눈앞에 미디안의 한 여인을 데리고 그의 형제에게로 온지라.” - 민수기 25:6

우리는 이 말씀에서 새로운 것을 배웁니다. 이스라엘 진영 안에서 행해지고 있는 이 난잡한 죄 역시 이스라엘 진영에 염병을 가져왔습니다. 비느하스가 주님의 회막 문에서 성관계를 하던 그 남녀를 죽이자마자, 그 염병이 그쳤습니다. 우리는 비느하스가 그의 창을 사용하여 그 이스라엘 남자와 그 미디안 여자에게 급진적인 수술을 행함으로 말미암아 그 염병이 그치기까지 그 염병으로 이스라엘 자손 24,000명이 죽었다고 말하는 것을 듣습니다.

시므온 지파의 지도자, 살루의 아들 시므리와 미디안 백성의 수령의 딸 고스비가 행한 일은 그냥 주님의 회막을 더럽힌 끔찍한 죄일 뿐만 아니라, 모압 족속과 미디안 족속의 우상숭배 음행에 비교할 때 이스라엘의 하나님은 무능하며 이스라엘의 지도자들도 무능하다는 것을 보여주려는 것이었습니다.

비느하스가 행한 일은 고정관념을 벗어난 것이었습니다. 그는 직접 법을 집행할 권한이 없었습니다. 그는 모세나 다른 누구에게서도 허락을 구하지 않았습니다. 그는 직접 법을 집행하여 두 죄인을 현장에서 처형했습니다.

모든 일이 제대로 되고 있고 하나님의 자녀의 생명을 절명시키는 염병도 없을 때, 정치적 옳음은 좋고 합당합니다. 주님의 백성의 집 전역에 염병이 맹위를 떨칠 때는 비느하스가 했던 것처럼 행동할 때입니다.

저는 결코 영적인 문제든 정치적 문제든 그 해결책으로 폭력을 옹호하는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려, 대중 여론이나 사랑으로 진리를 말한 결과에 대해 걱정하지 말고 분연히 일어나 사랑으로 진리를 말하는 것을 옹호하는 것입니다.

혹시 여러분에게 어쩔 수 없이 심지어 물리적 행동을 취해야만 하는 그런 상황이 생기거든, 모든 육체의 재판장께서는 비느하스가 한 일을 보시고 비느하스와 온 이스라엘에게 복 주시고 이스라엘 백성 24,000명을 죽인 염병을 그치신 바로 그 하나님이심을 기억하십시오.

성경 속의 모든 염병은 전능하신 하나님께서 그분의 자녀가 행한 죄와 가증한 것들에 대한 벌로 시작되게 하시고 전개 시키신 것이었습니다. 때때로 하나님께서 그분의 자녀를 각성시켜 그들의 가증한 것들을 깨닫게 하시는 유일한 방법은 염병으로 그들을 벌하시는 것입니다.

하나님께서는 이것을 애굽과 이스라엘에 여러 번 사용하셨지만, 통회하는 마음으로 자백하고 회개하면 언제나 염병을 그치시고 하나님의 자녀에게 복 주십니다.

전 세계에 걸쳐 코로나바이러스가 아직도 맹위를 떨치고 있습니다. 전 세계 감염자수는 놀라울 정도입니다. 미국과 브라질은 코로나바이러스 감염자수에서 앞서고 있는데요, 매일 신규 확진자수가 수만 명에 이릅니다. 사망자수도 증가하고 있으며 몇 나라에서는 이미 10만 명이 넘었고, 몇 나라에서는 5만 명이 넘었습니다.

이스라엘에서는 코로나바이러스 2차 창궐로 1차 창궐 때보다 감염자수가 더 많지만, 정부가 사람들을 엄중 단속 중입니다. 사회적 불만이 많고 사업체들은 문을 닫고 파산을 선포하고 있습니다.

이스라엘 실직자수는 백만 명에 가까워지고 있고 그들 중 많은 이들이 코로나바이러스 전염병이 끝나도 일자리가 없을 것입니다. 이스라엘에서는 음식이 부족한 사람들 수가 증가하고 있어 사람들을 먹여야 할 필요가 증가하고 있습니다. 우리는 모두 주님의 손 안에 있습니다.

저는 복음주의 교회 지도자들이 교회 사람들에게 그들의 지역사회의 필요를 돕는 데에 행동을 취하며, 기도와 금식으로 주님을 구하고, 정치적으로 옳음을 핑계로 죄를 규탄하지 않고 묵인하고 용인한 죄를 고백하고 회개하도록 거침없이 말하고 교육하기를 바랍니다.

참된 고백과 회개는 성경시대에 그랬던 것처럼 주님의 손을 부추겨 전염병을 그치게 할 것입니다.

모든 사람이 “주님은 어제나 오늘이나 내일이나 동일하십니다!” 말합니다.

문제는 우리가 정말로 우리 입에서 나오는 것을 믿는가 입니다. 여러분이 지도자면서 주님께서 그분의 세계를 다스리시고 계심을 믿지 않는다면, 가서 여러분이 정말로 메시아의 몸을 섬기도록 부름 받았는지, 아니면 그것이 그냥 직업인지 자문해 보시기 바랍니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List

We are living in a strange and crazy time. The Covid-19 plague is not subsiding around the whole world. It is like a wave of evil sweeping through the ocean of humanity, slamming against the shores of humanity and wreaking havoc in countries large and small.

Billions of people are affected by both the illness itself and by the devastated economies, and the hundreds of people who have lost their jobs and companies that are threatened with bankruptcy. It is called a “pandemic” in the media. In biblical language it would be called a plague.

There are several plagues in the Bible. In the English Bible the word “plague” is used 103 times and in every plague the end came when someone or the whole nation turned toward God and confessed and repented of their sins.

This week the reading is from the portion (parasha) of Pinchas (Phinehas) Numbers 25:10 – 29:40, and from the Prophets (haftarah) the reading is from 1 Kings 18:46 – 19:21. From the New Testament we read from the Gospel of John 2:13-22.

One of the things that I recommend to you when you read the text from the Torah and from the Prophets and from the New Testament is to ask yourself why has tradition selected these particular texts to be read together on a particular Shabbat? I think that it is an important exercise that will reveal to you what was on the agenda of the sages who between the 7th and 9th century C.E. (Common Era) chose these readings.

It will also give you a clue as to why the complementary texts from the New Testament were chosen. Try it after your reading. Ask yourselves why was this text from the Prophets chosen to complement the reading of the Torah?

I like the story of Pinchas. I suppose that I like Pinchas because I identify with his character. The Law (every law of every country) is there to help the masses to maintain an orderly society. However, an orderly society has to have an escape door for those people who are not politically correct and who have the courage and spirit to do what needs to be done outside the box.

People who are willing to go to jail if necessary in order to do what is right and outside the box. The born-to-be-rebels, the Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke. The little boy who was standing on the street with his father and mother to see the king’s new clothes, and when everyone was speaking of the beautiful clothing and gold buttons and the cufflinks of the shirt of the king. The little boy, said out loud, “But Mom the king is naked!”

There always has to be a little boy like this that is willing to see the true reality and not be afraid to speak it out. Most times these little boys are not very popular because they are standing alone against the majority of society, those around them.

They are not popular because they see what others refuse to see or can’t see due to their selective hearing and seeing, motivated by a namby-pamby society that chooses to live comfortably with the attitude of “le deluge apres moi”= which literally means, "After me, the flood." (Or, I don’t care what happens after I am gone.)

What is the story of Pinchas? It is directly connected to last week’s reading from Numbers 22 – 25. The internationally famous wizard, false prophet, and greedy Balaam was invited to curse Israel. The king of Moab, Balak, invited Balaam and promised him great wealth as a reward for cursing Israel.

Balaam is willing to come and curse Israel, but the Lord sends his angel to stop him and forbid Balaam to curse Israel. In turn Balaam seems to bless Israel and for this he gets no reward. Balaam is a person who wants the best of both worlds. He wants to appear as one who hears the Lord and who wants to keep his orders and commands.

On the other hand Balaam also wants to get the reward from Balak. He wants to live in both worlds and get the best from both. In the final count Balaam gives Balak the winning advice. Send your beautiful young women to seduce the men of Israel.

There is nothing new in this tactical approach. The same tactic has been used a million times by every government and every intelligence agency. We know from our modern times that Israel has used it several times but not on a major national scale. Israel has used the same tactic on an individual scale more than once.

Balaam was successful in giving this advice to Balak, king of Moab. The beautiful young maidens of Moab were very successful in the use of their bodies to drag the Israelites to worship their idols and draw them away from the God of Israel, the creator of the Universe.

Numbers 25 starts with this statement:

“Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel.” - Numbers 25:1-3 [NKJV]

What was God’s response to this harlotry and idolatry of the men of Israel with the daughters of Moab? The Lord commanded Moses to command the leaders of each tribe to arrest the men who participated in this horrible worship of Baal Peor, to take these men and kill them and hang them out in the sun so that everyone who didn’t commit this abomination would see and learn not to follow.

“And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.” - Numbers 25:6 [NKJV]

The King James language is trying to be clean. The phrase in the King James Version “presented to his brethren” in Hebrew means much more than “presented” – it means that he was having sex with the Moabite princes in front of the leaders and judges of Israel including Moses who was standing there and doing nothing. Moses the great man of God was so shocked and bewildered that he knew not what to do.

The text tells us what happened:

“Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.” - Numbers 25:7-9 [NKJV]

We learn something new from this text. This blatant sin that was going on in the camp of Israel also brought a plague on the camp of Israel. As soon as Pinchas (Phinehas) killed the couple that was having sex at the door of the tabernacle of the Lord the plague stopped. We are told that in that plague, 24,000 children of Israel died before it was stopped by Pinchas with the use of his javelin by performing radical surgery on the Israelite man and the Midianite woman.

The text tells us who was the person who did this abominable act at the door of the tabernacle of the Lord:

“Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites.” - Numbers 25:14-15 [NKJV]

What Zimri the son of Salu, the prince of the tribe of Simeon and Cozbi the daughter of the head of the people of Midian did was not just sin, a horrible sin of desecration of the tabernacle of the Lord, but was also trying to show that the God of Israel is impotent and that the leadership of Israel was impotent as well when compared to to the idol worshiping harlots of the Moabites and Midianites.

What Pinchas did was outside the box. He was not authorized to take the law into his own hands. He didn’t ask permission from Moses or from anyone else. He took the law into his own hands and executed the two sinners right on the spot.

You would think that God would have been angry with Pinchas because he didn’t respect the system, the legal procedures and just did what he felt necessary at the moment. On the contrary the Lord rewarded Pinchas and praised him and made him the chief of staff of the armies of Israel.

If someone today were to do something similar he would be judged in a court of law and thrown into prison. But not before the Lord God of Israel:

“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal.” - Numbers 25:11 [NKJV]

In special circumstances when no one in the leadership is willing to stand up and be counted on the side of the Lord someone has to stand up and be counted. This is not a call for rebellion against the leadership of your churches, but it is a call, first and foremost, to be ready to stand up for the truth and for the righteousness of God when the elected leadership is not functioning, and is at a loss as to what is the proper way, to demonstrate what is in fact, righteous indignation.

Stand up and be counted on the side of the Lord and let the chips fall where they may.

Political correctness is good and proper when all things are working in order and when there is no plague cutting down the lives of God’s children. When there is a plague raging through the house of the Lord’s people it is time to take action like Pinchas did.

I never advocate violence as a solution to anything spiritual or political, but I do advocate standing up and speaking the truth in love, and to not worry about popular opinion or the consequences of speaking the truth in love.

If there is ever a situation where you are forced to take even physical action remember the judge of all flesh is still the same God that saw what Pinchas did and blessed Pinchas and all of Israel and who stopped the plague that killed 24,000 of the people of Israel.

Every plague in the Bible was started and deployed by the almighty God as a punishment for sins and the abominations that His children executed. At times the only way for God to get His children to wake up and to recognize their abominations is to punish them with plagues.

He used it on Egypt and on Israel many times, but confession and repentance with a contrite heart always stops the plague and blesses the children of God.

The coronavirus is still raging throughout the world. The numbers of sick around the world is staggering. The United States and Brazil are leading in the number of coronavirus cases and they are into the tens of thousands of new sick people daily. The number of dead is also growing and already some countries have passed the 100,000 dead and several have passed the 50,000 dead.

In Israel the second wave of the coronavirus has hit and the numbers are much greater than they were during the first wave, but the government is cracking down on the public and there is much social complaining and businesses are closing and declaring bankruptcy.

The number of unemployed in Israel is getting close to a million and many of them will not have jobs when the coronavirus plague is over. The number of people who are lacking food is growing in Israel and the need to feed the people is growing. We are all in the hands of the Lord.

I hope that the leaders of the Evangelical churches will speak up and give instructions to their people to take action and to help with the needs of their communities and to seek the Lord through prayer and fasting, and in the confession of sins and in repentance for sins that are being tolerated and permitted without condemnation, for politically correct reasons.

True confession and repentance would provoke the hand of the Lord to stop the plague like it did in biblical times.

Everyone is saying, “The Lord is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow!”

The question is, do we really believe what is coming out of our mouths? If you are a leader and you don’t believe that the Lord is in control of His world, go ask yourself have you really been called to serve the body of the Messiah or is it just a job?!

Please keep praying for Marcia’s health, her memory, and diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Danah our daughter needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers.

Brazil is in bad shape with the coronavirus and the business community there in the midst of the social unrest is also under a major challenge. We have so many brothers and sisters in Brazil that need our prayer and intercession on their behalf. Here is a short list of communities and brothers and sisters in Brazil who need our prayers and God’s grace in these hard times:

Pray for the sister communities of Netivyah in Brazil, Har Zion, Ensenando de Siao, and Sar-El, and the Messianic congregations in Fortaleza, Santa Maria, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and in other cities, for individuals in Brazil that need God’s grace for healing: Michelle O., Marcelo Guimaraes family and especially his father, Paulo, and Marty Galante.

Pray for the healing of these brothers around the world: Angela I, Rachael and Daniel a brother and sister who need jobs and emotional healing. The world and the millions of people who are all dealing with the the coronavirus and the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost their loved ones to this plague of biblical proportions. We also need to be grateful for the countries like Israel who are beginning to come out and return to normality with caution and care.

Please remember David Stern and his family for David’s health issues. Also please pray for Daniel Stern and his family. These are very difficult times for the Stern family and we need to bring them all before the mercy seat of the almighty God. Sunday morning is the beginning of our Prime Minister’s court trial. He is being charged in three serious charges. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your very-best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this. 
 

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish!
