우리는 막 레위기 읽기를 끝냈습니다. 레위기는 정말로 토라(창세기부터 신명기까지)를 모세 율법이라고 부르는 이유입니다! 모세 율법(모세오경)의 대부분의 책은 전혀 율법이 아닙니다. 그 책들은 대부분 이스라엘 민족과 세계가 어떻게 존재하게 되었는가의 이야기에 대한 서사입니다. 그 책들은 노아 시대에 하나님께서 지우개를 꺼내어 칠판을 거의 깨끗하게 지워버리신 하나님의 진노의 깊이를 설명합니다. 우리 인류에게 다행이었던 것은 그 당시 적어도 상대적으로 의로운 한 사람이 있었고 그로 인해 그의 가족이 하나님에게서 은혜를 입었기 때문입니다.

이번 안식일 토라 포션으로 갑니다. 이번 안식일은 이삭 단 계수의 49일째 되는 날이고, 오는 일요일은 50일째 되는 날로, 일요일 저녁은 샤부옷(오순절)입니다. 금년에 우리는 안식일에 바미드바르(“광야에서”), 민수기의 첫 포션을 읽습니다.

민수기(בְּמִדְבַּר)의 첫 네 장은 겉보기에 인구조사, 지파별 배치, 레위 지파의 책임과 같은 행정적 상세 설명에 집중하는 듯 보이지만, 고대 이스라엘에게도 오늘날의 우리에게도 영적으로도 실제적으로도 심오한 메시지를 전하고 있습니다.

민수기는 왜 인구조사와 조직으로 시작될까요?

이번 안식일 토라 포션은 처음에는 아주 지루해 보입니다: 이름들과 숫자, 이름들과 숫자! 몇몇 이름들은 또 ‘다릅니다.’ 즉, 이상합니다. 저는 언제나 이 질문을 자문합니다: 하나님께서는 이 사람들의 이름과 이스라엘 각 지파 두령들의 이름 목록을 통해 내게 무엇을 가르치시려는 것일까? 저는 저의 스승님들 중 한 분에게서 답을 얻었습니다. 그분은 제가 3학년일 때부터 예루살렘 히브리대학교에서의 수학을 마칠 때까지 제 스승이셨습니다.

민수기는 히브리어로 바미드바르(= 광야에서)라고 부릅니다.

여러분이 광야에서 걸어갈 때, 그것은 언제나 일종의 도전입니다! 여러분은 무엇이 여러분을 기다리고 있을지 결코 알 수 없습니다! 광야에는 언제나 놀랄 일이 있습니다. 저는 시내 광야를 지나가는 여행을 여러 번 가이드했습니다. 첫 번째 여행은 극적이었는데요, 1970년대 이스라엘과 이집트가 평화협정을 체결한 직후였습니다. 평상형 트럭에 50명이 타고 있었습니다. 성인과 아이들과 어린아이들로 이루어진 아랍인들과 유대인들, 그리고 할리우드 수트를 입고 캘리포니아 로스앤젤레스에서 막 벤-구리온 공항에 도착한 미국인들로 힐튼 호텔로 갈 것 같았으나, 그날 밤은 시내 광야 모래밭에서 자게 된 이들이었습니다. 우리와 함께 여행하고 있던 가장 연로한 형제님들 중 한 분은 70대로, 어떤 경우에도 모래 바닥에 슬리핑백에서 자려 하지 않았습니다. 결국 그는 트럭 뒤에 오르도록 도움을 받아 혼자 차에서 주무셨습니다.

각 지파의 지도자들의 이름과 숫자와 제사장들과 지도자들을 말해주는 인구조사는 광야로 깊숙이 들어가기 전에 해야 할 필요가 있었습니다. 이것은 모두 여정을 위한 준비였고, 또한 하나님께서 이번 여정에는 적들과의 전쟁도 있을 것인데, 질서가 없다면, 그 전쟁들에서 질 것을 잘 아셨기 때문입니다. 어떤 여정이든 그에 대한 준비는 언제나 필요합니다. 그리고 시내 광야 같은 광야에서는 곱절로 준비가 필요합니다. 여러분이 민수기의 첫 몇 장을 읽다 보면, 이스라엘이 아무런 자유도 없이 노예 민족으로 자란 큰 무리로, 전쟁에서 훈련받은 바 없고, 처음으로 미지의 땅으로 들어가는 중이라는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 지파별로 나뉘었고, 이스라엘 자손에 섞인 다른 민족들도 있었습니다. 지금 이들에게는 광야를 지나는 동안 레위 지파가 짊어서 나를 언약궤와 회막이 있습니다. 이스라엘 자손과, 모세의 형 아론과, 모세를 포함한 모든 지도자들은 미지의 땅으로 걸어 들어가고 있습니다.

이 인구조사는 질서를 수립하고 이 길고 긴 광야에서의 미지의 여정 중에 누가 일을 하고 전쟁에 나갈 수 있고 누가 할 수 없는지 알아보기 위해 한 것입니다. 인구조사는 이 민족의 군사력을 조직하기 위해 필요한 것입니다. 이 인구조사는 각 지파 중 징병 연령(20세 이상)의 남자를 세는 것입니다. 모세와 그의 형 아론은 이 어려움 중에 훈련되지 않은 이 무리를 통제할 수 있도록, 이스라엘이 광야에서 방황하지 않고 목적과 규율에 따라 움직여야 함을 보이기 위해 지파와 가족별로 이스라엘 백성을 셌습니다.

진영의 질서 수립

지파들은 아무데나 진을 치지 않았습니다. 민수기 2장부터 4장까지에 그 순서가 기술되어 있습니다. 각 지파는 진영의 배치상 정해진 위치가 있었습니다. 레위 지파, 아론의 자손은 하나님의 계획에 따라 레위인이 요구하는 대로 질서가 지켜지도록 해야 하는 지파였습니다.

성막을 중심으로 각 지파가 위치하는 장소와 역할이 있습니다.

레위인들은 별도로 계수되었고 성물에 대한 책무가 부여되었습니다.

하나님께서는 진영 중앙에 거하고 계십니다. 진영은 깨끗하고 질서가 있어야 합니다. 레위인들은 하나님의 임재와 백성 사이에 양쪽을 모두 보호하며 완충역(域) 역할을 합니다.

21세기 우리에게 주는 토라 포션 바미드바르의 핵심 메시지

1. 하나님께서는 광야에서조차 혼돈이 아닌, 질서에 가치를 두시며, 그것이 하나님께서 원하시는 것입니다. 속도와 즉흥성과 개인주의에 중독된 세상에서, 민수기의 첫 몇 장은 우리에게 하나님께서 우리를 조직되고 책임감 있도록 부르신다는 것을 상기시킵니다.

모든 지파가 자기 위치가 있었듯이, 예슈아를 믿는 각 사람은 믿음의 공동체에서 위치와 역할이 있습니다. 이 원리 역시 각 회중 및 조직에 적용됩니다. 이는 특히 이스라엘에 필요하고 모든 사역, 모든 프로젝트에 필요합니다.

이스라엘에 있는 저희는 기적의 민족입니다. 알리야 이민자들은 아시아, 아프리카, 유럽, 남미, 북미, 심지어 남반구 호주와 인도네시아와 태평양의 섬들로부터 여러 언어, 여러 문화, 여러 음식의 103개국에서 모였습니다. 질서와 명확성이 없다면, 저희는 이스라엘에서 지금 저희에게 있는 것을 가지게 될 것입니다!

2. 모든 사람이 계수됩니다 – 그러나 고립된 개인으로 계수되지는 않습니다.

인구조사는 우리에게 각 사람이 중요하지만, 전체와의 관계 속에서 중요함을 가르칩니다. 우리의 현대 문화는 종종 공동체의 정체성보다 위에 있는 개인의 정체성을 강조하지만, 여기에서 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 고립된 개인으로가 아니라, 공동체의 일부로 보신다는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

3. 준비됨은 결코 우연이 아닙니다. 영적으로 준비됨은 물리적으로 준비됨보다 훨씬 더 중요합니다. 이스라엘은 그들의 여정에 준비되어야 했습니다. 준비에는 의도성, 미래 세대가 기억하도록 기록과 목록을 써서 보관하는 일이 필요합니다.

오늘날 우리도 우리의 문화와의 끔찍한 전쟁, 우리의 도덕적 나침반에서 싸우는 전쟁의 광야에서 있습니다. 지금 우리에게 있는 것은 도덕적 혼란과 영적 시저샐러드입니다. 우리는 훨씬 더 많은 준비와 규율이 필요합니다. 우리는 우리가 어디에 속해 있는지를 분명히 인지하고, 목적의 순수함과, 순수함 가운데 표현되는 믿음이 아주 중요함을 아는 것이 필요합니다.

5. 이번 토라 포션은 또한 지도자는 책임이 있어야 한다는 것도 가르칩니다. 지도자들(제사장, 지파의 두령, 목사, 교사, 장로, 집사)의 이름이 거명되고 계수됩니다. 그들은 책임감이 있어야 합니다.

오늘날 믿음의 교회 및 회당의 지도자들은 마찬가지로 가시적이며, 계수되고, 하나님과 사람들에게 책임감이 있어야 합니다.

이번 토라 포션에서 여러 가지 중요한 측면들이 깊이 있게 연구되어야 하는데요, 그 이유는 하나님께서 빚으시고 고난의 불 속에서 단련된 이스라엘 민족은 나머지 인류를 위해 하나님께서 부여하신 독특한 사명을 위해 값을 지불했고 언제나 지불하고 있기 때문입니다.

민수기는 고고한 신학으로 시작되지 않고 실질적이며 물리적이고 병참적인 상세한 사항으로 시작됩니다. 그러나 그렇게 하는 중에서도 하나님께서 진영의 배치, 백성의 계수, 각 가문의 책임 등 그 상세한 사항에 관여하십니다.

그냥 표류하지 말고, 목적을 가지고 살도록 합시다.

고립된 중에 혼돈이 아니라, 공동체 안에서 질서를 수용하도록 합시다. 우리는 자유자들이 아닙니다. 그 누구도 자유인이 아닙니다. 저는 정치적 자유를 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 정부는 우리에게 우리가 자유롭다는 환상을 줄 수 있지만, 실제로 우리는 자유롭지 않습니다. 민수기의 첫 토라 포션은 우리 각 사람이, 요람에 있는 아기조차 계수되며, 하나님을 알고 하나님께 예배하며 우리가 하나님의 길을 걸어간다면 하나님을 우리 아버지이며 보호자가 되시게 허락하게 하시려고 이미 하나님께서 뜻하신 바가 있다는 것을 아주 분명하게 하고 있습니다!

이스라엘이 광야 진영에서 그랬듯이 신성한 것은 정말로 신성하게 대하고 우리의 마음을 준비하도록 합시다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 30 May, 2025

We have just finished the reading of the book of Leviticus. The book of Leviticus is really why the whole Torah (From Genesis to the end of Deuteronomy) is called, in English, THE LAW OF MOSES! Most of the books of the Law of Moses are not law at all; they are mostly narratives of the story of how the nation of Israel and the world came to exist. They explain the depth of God's fury that he takes the eraser and wipes the blackboard almost clean as in the days of Noah. We, the human race, are fortunate that there was in those days at least one relatively righteous man and his family that, on behalf of that man, found grace in the eyes of God.

Now to the Torah portion of this Shabbat, that is the 49th day of the counting of the harvest, and this coming Sunday is the 50th day, which is the last day of the 50 days, and Sunday evening is the celebration of the Feast of Shavuot, = Pentecost. This year, we will read on Shabbat from the first portion of the book of Bamidbar = "In the Desert."

The first four chapters of the book of Numbers (בְּמִדְבַּר), although seemingly focused on administrative details such as censuses, tribal arrangements, and Levitical responsibilities, convey profound theological and practical messages—both for ancient Israel and for us today.

Why Does the Book of Numbers Begin with Censuses and Structure?

This Shabbat's readings at first seem very dull: names and numbers, names and numbers! Some of the names are also 'different' – strange. I have always asked myself this question: What is God trying to teach me from these lists of men and the names of the officials of each tribe of Israel? I do have an answer from one of my former teachers, who was my teacher from 3rd grade to the end of my studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The book of Numbers is in Hebrew called BAMIDBAR = In the wilderness.

When you walk in the wilderness, it is always a challenge! You never know what awaits you! The wilderness is always a surprise. I have guided many more than one trip through the same Sinai Desert. The first one was theatrical, and it was very soon after Israel and Egypt signed the peace agreement in the 1970s. There were 50 people on a flatbed truck. We were adults and children, little children, Arabs and Jews, and some Americans that had just landed in the Ben-Gurion airport from Los Angeles, coming from California dressed in a Hollywood suit, ready for the Hilton Hotel, but would sleep that night on the sands of the Sinai desert. One of our oldest brothers, who was traveling with us well into his 70's, would not, under any condition, sleep in a sleeping bag on the ground on the sand. In the end, he was helped to climb up into the back of the truck and sleep in the car by himself.

The census, the retelling of the numbers of leaders, and the names of each tribe and leaders and priests are needed before you enter deep into the desert. It is all in preparation for the journey and also because God knew well that this trip would also have battles with enemies, and if there were no order – the battles would be lost. Preparation for any journey is always needed, and in a desert like the Sinai, it is required doubly. When you read the first chapters of the book of Numbers, you see that Israel was a big group of people, people who were raised as enslaved people – without any freedom, not trained in battle, for the first time going into unknown territory. The people of Israel are divided into tribes, and there are other nationalities mixed with the children of Israel and now they have the ark of the covenant and the tent of meeting for the tribe of Levi to carry through the wilderness. The children of Israel and Aaron, the brother of Moses, and all the leadership, including Moses himself, are walking into the unknown.

The census was taken to be able to have order and a picture of who is capable and who is not capable of doing work and going to battle during this unknown long, long journey in the wordlessness. A census is necessary to organize the nation's military capabilities. It counts males of military age (20 and above) in each tribe. Moses and Aaron, his brother, count the people of Israel and each tribe and family so that during this difficulty, they can have control of this undisciplined crowd, showing that Israel must not wander in the desert but move with purpose and discipline.

Establishment of Order in the Camp.

The tribes didn't camp anywhere; instead, the order was described in Chapters 2–4. Each tribe had a set place in the camp layout, and the Tribe of Levi, the children of Aaron, was the tribe that made sure that the order was kept as the Levites required according to God's plan.

Each tribe has its place and role, with the Tabernacle at its center.

The Levites are counted separately and given charge over the holy things.

God is dwelling in the center of the camp. The camp must be pure and ordered. The Levites act as a buffer between the divine presence and the people, protecting both.

Central Messages of the Reading of Bamidbar for Us in the 21st Century

1. God values order, not chaos, and even in the wilderness, that is what God wants. In a world addicted to speed, spontaneity, and individualism, the early chapters of Numbers remind us that God calls us to structure, responsibility, and accountability.

Just as every tribe had a place, each believer in Yeshua has a place and a role in the community of faith. This principle also applies to each congregation and organization. It is especially needed in Israel and for every project and ministry.

We in Israel are a miracle nation. Immigrants gathered from 103 different nationalities, languages, cultures, kitchens from Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and North America, and even from down under from Australia and Indonesia and the Pacific Ocean islands. Without order and clarity, we will have in Israel what we have now!

2. Everyone Counts – But Not as an Isolated Individual

The censuses teach us that each person matters but in relationship to the whole. Our modern culture often emphasizes personal identity over communal identity, but here, we see that God views us as part of a community, not just as isolated individuals.

3. Readiness is never accidental, and Spiritual readiness is even more critical than physical readiness. Israel had to prepare for their journey. Preparation required intentionality, keeping records and lists for the sake of future generations' memory.

Today, we, too, are in a wilderness of a terrible war with our culture, a war in our moral compass. What we have now is a moral confusion and spiritual Caesar salad. We need much more preparation and discipline; we have to have clear knowledge of where we belong, and a purity of purpose and trust that is expressed in purity is essential.

4. The Presence of God Requires Boundaries

God's holiness is not casual and must be respected in our homes and the community. The Levites' placement and duties emphasize the holiness of God's presence and the danger of thinking that we can have a casual relationship like typical Israelites. We must take God and God's Word seriously, and as Satchmo sang it, "We all must straighten up and fly right!"

In our time, the sacred is often treated as ordinary, and our Torah reading teaches us that we better take things much more seriously, especially the respect for the elderly and the sick. I know that I am also guilty of some of this negligence, but I am writing this prayer list after reading the Torah part of Numbers – Bamidbar again. I remember and feel like I did as a young child after my father applied his crocodile leather aspirin on my back end, his call for reverence and awe.

5. Our Torah portion also teaches that the Leadership Must Be Accountable. Leaders (priests, heads of tribes, pastors, teachers, elders, and deacons) are named and counted. They must be responsible.

Today's leaders in faith churches and Synagogues must likewise be visible, counted, and held accountable to God and the people.

In this Torah portion, many vital aspects need to be studied in depth because Israel, as a nation formed by God, forged in the fire of suffering and paid and is always paying for God's unique mission for the rest of humanity.

The Book of Numbers does not begin with lofty theology but with practical, physical, and logistical details. And yet, in doing so, it shows us that God is involved in the details—in the arrangements of camps, in the counting of people, in the responsibilities of each family.

Let us live with purpose, not drift.

Let us embrace order in the community, not chaos in isolation. We are not free people. No one is a free person, and I am not speaking of political freedom. Governments can give us the illusion that we are free, but in reality, we are not. The reading of the first Torah portion of Numbers makes it so clear each of us, even the baby in the cradle, is counted and already purposed by God to know God and worship God and allow God to be our father and protector if we walk in His paths!

Let us treat the sacred as truly sacred and prepare our hearts as Israel did their wilderness camp.

Mom still does not have much of an appetite. Dad is recording a three part mind candy. This Friday you can watch the first one. dad is also caring for mom and now also coordinating what needs to be packed for their flights to Nashville, TN late June. Dad still has as a PET scan for his two forms of cancer in early June. Pray for the flights not to be canceled. The remodeling is moving forward the shower is out and the concrete has been cut down.  Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

 Granddaughter of Pastor Jozef (Jagodka) is awake and its a true hand of God for bringing healing to her body. if you remember a couple of weeks ago she was in dire straits with an infection and today she is awake and drawing. Please give thanks to the Lord.

In the U.K.:

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

In Finland:

 Mauno Lemponen has been diagnosed with cancer in advanced stages. We are asking for Gods Will to be done, giving him healthy days with family—prayers for Hilka, Miika, and Ester, who support each other.

 Pray for Keijo and Salme, our dear partners and fellow workers in God’s flock. Both Keijo and Salme have some challenging heart issues.

 Pray for Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami, our dear sisters.

 Pray for Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia, Victor, Aaron Tani, and Hillel.

 Roberto has reached out on behalf of his friend Nicoletta B whose father has passed way recently. Please pray for her spirit as she struggles with such loss.

In Denmark:

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

In Ethiopia:

 Diu G. has been sick with meningitis and he and his family are all in need of prayers for strength and healing to help him.

In Brazil:

 Ismael V ask for prayers for his parents: Ismael V 80 years old (Father) & Margarida Feliciana V, 75 years old (Mother). The mother has been suffering due to medical errors since 2008, and only a miracle can solve the situation. The father has prostate and vision problems.

 Max is anxious waiting for a court decision regarding documentation on his families jewish roots. Please keep Max and the courts outcome in your prayers.

 update Hester H in Virginia is in Beth's aunt and is I the hospital fighting pneumonia. she is over covid now. she needs prayers for her strength. Her son Matthew needs prayers as well as he is her caregiver. This has been very demanding for one person to keep up with. pray for his strength.

 update Barry Shulam - my body is adjusting to the medications. somedays I feel weird however that should go away.

 Paul S is in the market looking for his next job. It's frustrating to not hear back from companies. We pray for an opportunity and for a calm sprit to guide Paul through this effort.

 Adam B. is asking for prayers for job security. The hatchet job cutting that is taking place in the USA is not without families that are impacted. Please keep Adam and his family in prayers for job security.

 Jenny is Shirleyann's to find a different neurologist that will accept her insurance.

 Shirleyann tomorrow she has an EKG test. the doctor yesterday stated that the need for surgery was not needed at this time.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Jose needs your prayers for a blessing on his marriage to grow stronger and prayers for the birth of a Son.

 Aida Ramirez 99 yrs old she had her MRI done and they are waiting for the results on the 23 of the month.

 Aida Gonzalez is still dealing with back pain. continue to pray for her strength to care for he rmother.

 update Pat S needs prayers for the pains she is experiencing in her hip joint from arthritis this pain is more of problem then the back pain she has been experiencing. We are praying for a better treatment for the pain management. Also keep Philip who is in his 90s and is caring for Pat.

 Jerry Rogers - a long time prayer warier and supporter in Dallas has been diagnosed with cancer. has returned home after being in the hospital for an extended period of time for treatments.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God both Bill and Jill are in remission. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B., his wife Aviva, their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
