by Barry Shulam Torah Leviticus 25:1-27:34 BeHar & BeChukotai Prophets Jeremiah 16:19-17:14 New Testament Luke 4:16-21 Bechukotai (Walking in His Statutes) – From Sinai to the Shepherd When I was in middle school, some of my favorite days were field trips to the Jerusalem Forest, Ya'ar Yerushalayim. We would pile off the bus, noisy and excited, and then fall into line behind our teachers as they led us along the narrow paths through the trees. The teachers were always out in front of us kids. They knew where the trail dropped, where the rocks were loose, and where the path turned unexpectedly. Looking back, those simple walks gave a picture that changes how certain Scriptures are read. When the Bible talks about “walking” with God, it is not describing a cold, legal relationship where a person is handed a list of rules and told to figure it out alone. It is more like that walk in the Jerusalem Forest: someone is ahead on the path who already knows the way. That is the force of this week’s portion, Bechukotai. The portion opens: “If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them” (Leviticus 26:3). The Hebrew wording is striking because it does not simply say, “If you obey.” It says, im bechukotai telechu—“if you will walk in My statutes.” The verb telechu comes from the same Hebrew root as halacha: ה־ל־ך, “to walk” or “to go.” That connection is important. Halacha is often translated as “Jewish law,” but at its core it means a way of walking, a path of life shaped by God’s instruction. In other words, the Torah is not presenting covenant faithfulness merely as a legal code to be checked off. It is presenting it as a path to be walked, step by step, with God out in front. Rabbinic tradition presses the opening verse even further. Sifra and Rashi ask why the text says both “If you walk in My statutes” and then immediately, “and keep My commandments and do them.” If the verse were only talking about obedience, the second half would have been enough. Because of that, Rashi explains that “If you walk in My statutes” means “that you will toil in Torah.” The call is not only to perform commandments, but to live in ongoing, strenuous, shaping engagement with God’s word until it forms the whole direction of life. This also opens up the nature of chukim. In rabbinic thought, chukim are usually commandments whose reasons are not immediately obvious, unlike mishpatim, which seem morally or socially intuitive. Chukim are the commands that resist being reduced to human logic. They summon trust before explanation. Yet the rabbis do not treat that as irrationality in the modern sense. One stream of interpretation emphasizes that chukim are decrees of the King, obeyed because they come from Him whether or not their reasons are evident. Another stream, reflected in discussions of Ramban, suggests that these commands may indeed have profound reasons, but those reasons are too deep to be fully grasped at a glance; their logic exceeds us rather than lacking logic altogether. In both cases, the point is similar: covenant life is not based on the illusion that God must first justify Himself to the human mind. That is why telechu is so important. The verse does not say merely, “Accept My statutes,” as if faith were only intellectual agreement. It says, “Walk in them.” A path is known by walking it. Some truths are only learned on the road, in trust, repetition, and relationship. Halacha, then, is not simply the catalog of rulings; it is the lived movement of a people learning to put their feet where God tells them to step. This is where the connection to Jesus' ministry becomes especially powerful. Luke 4 opens the public ministry of Yeshua by showing Him led by the Spirit into the wilderness and then returning in the power of the Spirit to Galilee. In other words, before Jesus publicly teaches or heals, He is already shown walking the path set before Him by the Father. He does not invent His own road. He walks the one given to Him. Luke 4 presents Jesus not only as a teacher of God's way, but as the one who perfectly embodies it. Where Israel was called to walk in God's statutes, Jesus walks in complete obedience through testing, hunger, rejection, and mission. Even the wilderness scene reflects the logic of the chok: the Spirit leads Him into a place that does not look easy or immediately understandable, yet He trusts the Father and answers every temptation with the words of Scripture. He walks the hard path because He knows the One who sent Him. Then in the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus reads from Isaiah and declares: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” (Luke 4:18–19) This is more than a mission statement. It is the covenant life of God breaking into the world through the obedient walk of the Son. In Bechukotai, walking in God's statutes leads to blessing, peace, fruitfulness, and the promise that God Himself will dwell among His people and walk in their midst. In Luke 4, Jesus becomes the living expression of that reality. Wherever He walks, good news reaches the poor, liberty reaches the bound, sight reaches the blind, and the favor of the Lord is announced. So the movement from Bechukotai to Jesus is not a contrast but a fulfillment. The Torah says, “If you will walk in My statutes.” Jesus shows us what that walk looks like in human flesh. He hears the Father's voice, follows the Spirit's leading, and brings the blessing of God's kingdom into broken places. He is not behind us shouting instructions. He is ahead of us on the path. That brings me back to those walks in the Jerusalem Forest. As children, we did not have to master the map before taking the next step. We only had to keep our eyes on the one leading the way. The right perspective changes your understanding of these Scriptures and of your relationship with God. When God calls us to walk, it is with Him. His voice is ahead of us. He has already been where He is asking us to go, and He knows how to guide both you and me. So perhaps the opening line of Bechukotai can be heard this way: if you will take My Torah not as mere information but as your path; if you will receive even My chukim not as arbitrary burdens but as the wise instructions of the One who sees farther than you do; if you will keep walking where My voice leads—then you will discover that covenant is not first about rules, but about learning to walk with the God who has already gone before you. Yes I am sick with cancer that is true. The cancer is non-Hoskins Follicular cancer in the pancreas, lungs, stomach. It is a slow growing cancer. There are no treatments with drugs and only medical following with MRI’s and Gastroscopes, nuclear FDG Cat Scans. Joseph is working full time and writing, preaching, traveling internationally and sharing the preaching in Jerusalem sharing the pulpit with our young leader Yehuda who is also doing a fine work for Netivyah. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep with religions they have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.

Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.
Keijo and Salme were in a car accident and Salme is recovering from a broken chest bone. Please keep them in your prayers for full recovery.

Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
update Shirleyann - sounds great. I spoke with her and her coverage for extra medical supplies has come through. she still needs prayers for all the paperwork for her medicare and medicaid to complete. There was some follow through that was not done after staff told her it would be done.
Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)

Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
