이번 안식일에 전 세계 모든 회당에서는 노아와 그의 가족 이야기를 공중 낭독할 것입니다.

토라 포션 본문은 창세기 6:9-11:32입니다.

(이 포션은 전부 홍수 이야기를 다루고 있기 때문에 좀 깁니다.)

선지서에서 읽는 부분은 이사야 54:1–55:5입니다.

신약성경에서 읽는 부분은 누가복음 17:20-27입니다.

노아의 홍수 이야기는 노아와 그의 가족과 동물들의 흥미로운 이야기만은 아닙니다. 이 이야기에서 제게 가장 흥미로운 점은 원근 다른 여러 민족에도 유사한 홍수 이야기가 있다는 것입니다.

노아의 홍수와 유사한 이야기는 메소포타미아 길가메쉬 서사시(주전 2100–1800년), 그리스 듀칼리온 신화(시기 다양), 수메르 바벨로니아 아트라하시스, 지우수드라 서사시(주전 2100–1800년) 등 여러 문화에도 있습니다. 이들 신화는 종종 신이 내린 홍수, 방주를 짓는 선택받은 생존자, 홍수 후 제사 같은 공통 요소가 있습니다. 그렇지만 홍수의 원인, 생존의 이유, 세상에 다시 인구 증가의 방식은 다릅니다. 이들 이야기는 인류의 기원, 하나님의 권능, 각 문화권의 창조와 멸망의 순환적 성격을 설명해 줍니다.

유사점과 차이점 요약

• 메소포타미아 신화:

이들 신화는 그 지역 홍수의 주기적 성격을 설명하고, 그 시기 정치적 사회적 불안정성을 반영했을 것 같습니다. 이 신화들은 신들의 능력을 정당화하고 그들의 권위를 강화시켜주는 데에 사용되었을 것 같습니다.

• 그리스 듀칼리온 신화:

이 신화는 그리스 사람들의 기원과 인간과 신들과의 관계를 설명해 주었을 것 같습니다. 이것은 인간의 사악함의 결과와 신들을 공경하는 중요성을 보여줌으로써 도덕적 체계가 되어 주었습니다.

• 노아의 홍수 이야기:

이 이야기는 서구 문명에 심대한 영향을 끼쳐, 윤리 도덕적 가치관을 형성하고 사법 체계에 영향을 주었습니다. 이는 인간의 기원과 인간의 하나님과의 관계에 대한 이해의 기초를 제공합니다.

성경 외에 다른 어떤 문화와 신화가 전 세계적 홍수에 대해 말하고 있을까요?

중국 남부와 동남아에 살고 있는 미아오 소수민족의 신화가 있습니다. “옛날에 남매가 있었다. 오라비의 이름은 푸씨(복희)이고 여동생의 이름은 누와였다. 둘은 천둥신을 도왔고 천둥신은 둘에게 그가 큰 비를 내려 사람들을 벌주겠으니 푸씨는 홍수에서 살아남기 위해 호리병박을 심으라(호리병박을 배로 사용하라)고 말했다.

푸씨와 누와는 천둥신의 말을 따라 홍수에서 살아남았다. 둘만 유일하게 살아남았다. 그래서 둘이 결혼하여 지구상의 모든 인류의 조상이 되었다.”

또 다른 유사한 신화는 한족, 티벳족, 이족, 야오족의 신화입니다. 이들 신화 모두 “지구상의 다른 모든 사람들을 죽인 홍수 후에 결혼한 남매” 이야기를 말하고 있습니다. 그렇지만 남매의 이름이라든가, 홍수가 내리게 된 이유라든가, 이들 남매가 홍수에서 살아남은 방식이라든가 이야기의 세부 사항은 다릅니다.

이들 소수민족은 모두 티벳-버어마어를 구사합니다. 이들 신화는 필시 기원이 같을 것입니다. 중국의 주류 민족인 한족의 누와와 푸씨 신화에는 반인, 반사(뱀) 신과 여신이 있습니다. 이들의 고대 언어에서 이 신화는 중국어로는 “교미”라는 뜻의 “교차 꼬리”라고 불립니다.

저는 또한 노아의 방주와 비슷한 이야기를 담고 있는 남미 아마존강 골짜기 인디언 부족들의 신화도 언급할 수 있겠지만, 앞서 극동아시아 이야기들만으로도 성경의 노아와 그의 가족과 그가 지은 방주 이야기가 역사적이라는 것을 증명하기에 충분할 것 같습니다.

그리고 하나님께서 홍수를 내리신 이유는 인간이 저지른 죄 때문에 인류를 다시 시작하게 만든 재시작 버튼이 되었습니다. 사실, 제게 성경 전체 중에서 가장 슬프면서도, 이율배반적으로, 기분 좋아지는 구절은 창세기 6장 5-8절입니다.

“여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고 땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고” (창세기 6:5-6)

“이르시되 내가 창조한 사람을 내가 지면에서 쓸어버리되 사람으로부터 가축과 기는 것과 공중의 새까지 그리하리니 이는 내가 그것들을 지었음을 한탄함이니라 하시니라 그러나 노아는 여호와께 은혜를 입었더라” (창세기 6:7-8)

홍수 전 인류 세대 중 가장 퇴폐적이고 사악한 세대에 여호와의 은혜를 입은 노아라는 한 사람이 있었습니다. 이 사람 노아 덕분에 인류가 멸종되지 않고 살아남게 되었습니다. 노아가 완전하거나 대단히 신앙심이 좋아서가 아닙니다. 그는 종일(저는 종야까지도 라고 생각합니다) 악을 생각하는 세대와는 충분히 달랐습니다. 기억하시지요? 열 세대 후, 아브라함이 친척이 소돔에 있기에 소돔을 구하기 위해 하나님과 협상을 시도했던 것을 말입니다. 하나님께서는 아브라함이 소돔에서 열 명의 의인을 찾는다면, 퇴폐적이고 사악한 소돔 성읍의 모든 사람을 살려주시겠다 동의하셨습니다.

저는 지금 노아와, 그의 가족과, 홍수와, 홍수 후에 노아와 그의 아들이 지은 죄에 대한 모든 이야기를 다루고 싶지는 않습니다. 저는 방주에 들어간 동물들을 탐구하고 싶습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 토라(율법)를 아무한테 주신 것이 아니라는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 율법으로 부여된 유일한 것은 창세기 9장의 노아의 계명이었습니다. 우리는 이것을 다음 주 토라 포션에서 다룰 것입니다.

저는 여러분을 성경 전체에서 가장 도전적인 쟁점—코셔(정결) 및 비-코셔(부정) 고기 및 음식에 관한 쟁점 중 하나로 안내해 드리겠습니다.

토라는 아직 시내산에서 이스라엘에 부여되지 않았습니다. 그렇지만 하나님께서는 이미 정결하고 부정한 짐승을 나누셨습니다. 하나님께서는 노아에게 먹을 수 있는 정결한 짐승을 일곱 쌍씩 주셨습니다. 그분께서는 노아에게 사람이 먹어서는 안 되는 짐승은 두 쌍씩만 취하라고 명하셨습니다.

마가복음 7장 19절은 종종 예슈아께서 “모든 음식물을 깨끗하다 하시니라.”로 번역된다고 주장하는 데에 인용됩니다.

이 구절은 대체로 다음과 같습니다:

“이러므로 (예수께서) 모든 음식물을 깨끗하다 하시니라” (마가복음 7:19)

여러 번역본에서 “이러므로 그가 선언하셨다”는 문구를 넣어 예슈아께서 음식법을 폐하셨음을 암시합니다. 그렇지만 헬라어에는 “그가”라는 주격 대명사가 없습니다. 이 주격 대명사를 넣은 것은 예슈아께서 음식적 제한을 폐하신다고 생각한 번역자의 해석적 판단을 반영하는 것이며, 예슈아께서 토라와 음식법을 폐하셨다는 잘못된 인상을 줍니다.

이것은 잘못된 해석입니다. 여러분은 기본적인 논리를 사용하여 예슈아께서 모든 음식법을 폐하셨다고 말하는 구절이 삽입되었다는 것을 보실 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 예슈아께서는 1인칭 화자, 즉 “내가”로 말씀하시고 계신데, 예슈아께서 음식법을 폐하셨다는 진술은 “그가”이기 때문입니다. 이는 누군가 예슈아의 말씀을 삽입했거나 바꿨다는 의미입니다.

노아의 홍수 이야기는 아주 중요하며, 가장 중요한 점은 여호와의 은혜를 입은 한 사람이 상대적으로 의인으로서 여호와의 은혜를 입음으로써 인류 역사의 흐름을 바꿨다는 것입니다.

우리 모두 주의 은혜를 입는 삶을 살도록 합시다. 어쩌면 주께서 이 세상을 멸할 수도 있는 다음 번 재앙을 면해 주실 수도 있습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 25 October, 2025

This Shabbat, all the synagogues in the world are going to read publicly the story of Noah and his family.

The reading of the Torah portion is from Genesis 6:9-11:32.

(It is a more extended reading because it covers the whole story of the Flood.)

From the Prophets, the reading is from Isaiah 54:1–55:5.

From the New Testament, the reading is from Luke 17:20-27.

Noah's flood narrative is not only the fascinating story of Noah, his family, and the animals. What is for me the most fascinating aspect of this narrative is that other nations from far and near have similar stories of a flood.

Stories similar to Noah's flood exist in many cultures, including the ancient Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2100–1800 BCE), the Greek myth of Deucalion (date varies), and the Sumerian and Babylonian epics of Atra-Hasis and Ziusudra (c. 2100–1800 BCE). These myths often share common elements like a divine flood, a chosen survivor who builds an ark, and a post-flood sacrifice, but differ in the cause of the flood, the reason for survival, and the method of repopulating the world. These stories served to explain humanity's origins, the gods' power, and the cyclical nature of creation and destruction in their respective civilizations.

Similarities and differences

• Mesopotamian myths:

These myths likely served to explain the cyclical nature of floods in the region and reflected the political and social instability of the time. The myths may have been used to justify the power of the gods and rulers, reinforcing their authority.

• Greek myth of Deucalion:

This myth may have explained the origins of the Greek people and the relationship between humanity and the gods. It provided a moral framework by showing the consequences of human wickedness and the importance of respecting the gods.

• Noah's flood story:

The story has had a profound impact on Western civilization, shaping ethical and moral values and influencing legal systems. It provides a foundation for understanding human origins and humanity's relationship with the divine.

What other cultures and mythologies talk about a worldwide flood (besides the Bible)?

There is one myth from the Miao ethnic group (lives in southern China and Southeast Asia). "Long long ago there was a brother and sister. Brother's name is Fuxi(伏羲) and Sister's name is Nuwa. They had helped a thunder god, and the thunder god told them he would make heavy rain to punish the people, and Fuxi should plant a bottle gourd to survive the flood. (They should use a bottle gourd as a ship.)

Fuxi and Nuwa followed the thunder god's words and survived the flood. They are the only two people who survived. So, they married and became the ancestors of all human beings on earth.

Another similar myth from the Han, Tibet, Yi, and Yao ethnic groups. All of them tell the story of 'brother and sister married after a flood killed all other people on earth ', but details of the story vary, like the names of the brother and sister, why there was a flood, and how they survived the flood.

All of these ethnic groups speak Tibeto-Burman languages. These myths must have the same origins. In Han (the major ethnic group in China), the myth of Nuwa and Fuxi is a half-human, half-snake god and goddess. In their ancient language, this myth is called (cross-tail), which means 'copulation.' (cross-tail) in Chinese.

I could also cite South America and the Indian tribes of the Amazon River Valley and bring similar stories to Noah's ark. But, I think that what I provided from the Far East narratives above is sufficient to make a good case that the Biblical story of Noah and his family, and the Ark that he built, is historical.

And the reason why God sent the flood was as a restart button on humanity for the sins that they committed. In fact, one of the saddest verses for me in the whole Bible, but paradoxically also a verse that makes me very happy, is Genesis 6:5.

"Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart." (Genesis 6:5-6 NKJV)

"So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. (Genesis 6:6-8 NKJV)

Pre-flood, in the most decadent and evil generation of humanity, there was one man named Noah who found grace in the eyes of the Lord, and by virtue of that man, Noah, humanity was saved. Not that Noah was a perfect man, not that he was super religious. He was different enough from his generation that was thinking evil all day, (and I also presume all the night!) Remember, 10 generations later, when Abraham was trying to negotiate with God for the benefit of Sodom because he had family living in Sodom, Lot's family. God agreed that if Abraham could find 10 righteous people in Sodom, God would spare the whole city of the decadent and evil population of Sodom.

I don't want to now enter into all the aspects of this story of Noah, his family, the flood, and the sin that Noah and his son committed after the flood. I want to delve into the animals that entered the flood. We must remember that God had not given the Torah (Law) to anyone. The only thing that was given as a law was the Noahic commandments in chapter 9, which we are going to deal with in next week's Torah portion.

Let me take you to one of the most challenging issues in the whole Bible—the issue of kosher and non-kosher meat and food.

"Then the LORD said to Noah, 'Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made." (Genesis 7:1-4 NKJV).

The Torah wasn't yet given to Israel on Mount Sinai. But already God had divided the clean and unclean animals. He gave Noah seven pairs of the clean animals that are edible. He gave Noah instructions to take only two pairs of the animals that humans ought not eat.

The text Mark 7:19, often cited in English translations to argue that Yeshua "declared all foods clean."

Here's how it appears in most English Bibles (NRSV example):

"Thus he declared all foods clean." (Mark 7:19 NRSV).

Many English versions insert "Thus he declared," implying Yeshua abolished the food laws. But there is no pronoun "he" in Greek. The insertion reflects an interpretive decision by translators who assumed Yeshua was annulling dietary restrictions, giving the false impression that Yeshua abolished the Torah and the food laws.

This is a false interpretation. You can use standard logic and see that the phrase that says that Yeshua abolished all the food laws is inserted because Yeshua is talking in first voice, "I" - and the statement that Yeshua abolished the food laws is "HE" – that means that someone inserted or changed the statement of Yeshua.

Paul in 1 Timothy 4:3-5 makes it clear that a disciple of Yeshua can't eat things that are forbidden in God's word in both the Old and New Testaments. What Paul said is that if you can bless the Lord for the food that you eat, according to prayer and the Word of God, then you can eat it. But you can't say, "Lord, thank you for something that the Lord said, "don't do it." And the Lord did say what is clean and can be used for food, and what is not clean and can't be used for human consumption. Here is the text from 1 Timothy 4 for you to meditate on and come to your own conclusion and understanding:

3 They forbid marriage and abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer.

The flood narrative of Noah is significant, and the most critical aspect is that one man who found grace in the eyes of the Lord changed the course of human history by being a relatively righteous man who found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Let us all live a life that finds grace in the eyes of the Lord, and maybe the Lord will spare the next disaster that might destroy the world.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.

 update I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.

 Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 update Bills received news in his last cancer scan that it has returned. Please keep him and Jill in your prayers as they begin a new round of treatments. I spoke with bill on the phone and ask that you pray his body will react well to the treatments and the side effects will be minimal.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
