이번 주 토라 포션 역시 제가 가장 좋아하는 토라 포션 중 하나인데요, 그 이유는 이 토라 포션이 이 우주의 창조주 우리 하나님, 우리 메시아 예슈아의 아버지, 우리 행성 지구의 주님께서는 경직적으로 율법주의적이고 가혹하고 독재적인 통치자가 아니심을 보여주기 때문입니다. 이번 토라 포션은 하나님의 권위로 인간의 존엄을 극적으로 시인합니다.

우리는 이번 안식일에 이스라엘이 요단강을 건너기 얼마 전 일어난 마지막 사건들을 기술하고 있는 다섯 장 민수기 25:10-30:1을 읽습니다.

선지서에서 읽는 본문(하프타라)은 예레미야 1:1–2:3입니다. 신약성경에서 읽는 본문은 요한복음 2:13-22입니다.

우리가 토라와 선지서와 신약성경을 읽고 토론하는 것에 대해 제가 증언할 수 있는 한 가지는, 말씀을 읽고 하나님께서 우리 개인이든 집단이든 사람들을 어떻게 다루시는지를 보는 것은 언제나 제 관심사에 흥미롭고 도전이 되며 제 영에는 고무적이라는 것입니다. 저는 여러분께 신앙심 있는 이스라엘 사람들이 안식일에 하나님의 말씀에서 읽는 포션들을 매주 똑같이 읽을 것을 강력히 권장합니다.

여러분에게 두 가지 일이 일어날 것입니다:

1) 3년 안에 성경에 대한 여러분의 지식과 이해가 극적으로 증가할 것입니다.

2) 여러분은 갑자기 성경 이야기를 즐기며 성경이 시작과 중간과 끝이 있는 책이라는 것을 이해하게 될 것입니다. 성경은 지금의 여러분의 삶에 중요한 의미를 지닌 인류의 자서전을 담고 있습니다! 물론, 이것은 비-유대 민족 가운데 새로 개종한 이들을 더 큰 이스라엘 안, 예슈아의 제자 공동체 양떼 안으로 어떻게 받아들일까를 결정하기 위해 소집된 사도행전 15장 예루살렘 공의회에서 사도들이 권장한 것입니다. 사도행전 15장의 해당 본문입니다:

이번 안식일 토라 포션 이름 역시 여느 때와 다릅니다. 그 이름은 사건이 아니라 사람 이름을 땄습니다. 모세나 아론이나 모세와 아론의 누이 미리암 같은 이름을 딴 토라 포션은 없습니다. 이번 토라 포션은 “핀하스(비느하스)”라고 합니다.

그렇다면 토라 포션에 언급된 아론 가문의 이 젊은 레위인에 대해 무엇이 그렇게 중요한 것일까요? 비느하스는 모세의 형 아론의 손자였습니다.

다음은 제사장 아론의 손자 엘르아살의 아들 비느하스의 이야기입니다:

“제사장 아론의 손자 엘르아살의 아들 비느하스가 보고 회중 가운데에서 일어나 손에 창을 들고 그 이스라엘 남자를 따라 그의 막사에 들어가 이스라엘 남자와 그 여인의 배를 꿰뚫어서 두 사람을 죽이니 염병이 이스라엘 자손에게서 그쳤더라 그 염병으로 죽은 자가 이만 사천 명이었더라 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 제사장 아론의 손자 엘르아살의 아들 비느하스가 내 질투심으로 질투하여 이스라엘 자손 중에서 내 노를 돌이켜서 내 질투심으로 그들을 소멸하지 않게 하였도다 그러므로 말하라 내가 그에게 내 평화의 언약을 주리니 그와 그의 후손에게 영원한 제사장 직분의 언약이라 그가 그의 하나님을 위하여 질투하여 이스라엘 자손을 속죄하였음이니라” (민수기 25:7-13)

친애하는 형제자매님들, 여기에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있습니까? 이 젊은이 비느하스는 직접 법을 집행합니다. 모세와 아론과 이스라엘의 장로들은 그냥 서서 하나님과 그분의 영광이 임재하는 주님의 성막 입구에서 벌어지고 있는 가증한 일을 보고만 있었습니다. 여러분, 지난 주에 읽은 발람과 그의 나귀가 이스라엘에 걸려고 했으나 효과가 없었던 마법과 저주 이야기를 기억하십니까?

발람은 여전히 금으로 대가를 받기를 원했기에 이스라엘과의 전쟁에서 어떻게 이길지 조언했습니다. 모압의 아리따운 젊은 여인들을 보내 이스라엘 남자들을 유혹하라는 것이었습니다. 이것은 이스라엘을 넘어지게 할 확실한 방법이었습니다. 이것이 발락이 한 일이었습니다. 그리고 지금 우리는 하나님께서 이스라엘의 젊고 늙은 남자들에 대해 노하시어, 너무 약하여 이스라엘 진영 안에서 지금 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 모르는 이스라엘을 벌하시기 위해 염병을 보내신 것을 보고 있습니다. 성경 본문의 상당 부분을 읽지 않고는 이 이야기를 이해하기 어렵습니다:

죽임을 당한 이스라엘 남자 곧 미디안 여인과 함께 죽임을 당한 자의 이름은 시므리니 살루의 아들이요 시므온인의 조상의 가문 중 한 지도자이며 죽임을 당한 미디안 여인의 이름은 고스비이니 수르의 딸이라 수르는 미디안 백성의 한 조상의 가문의 수령이었더라” (민수기 25:1-15).

이제 저는 여러분과 하나님께서 저 위 천국에서 만물을 어떻게 보시는지, 하나님의 시각이 아래에 있는 우리의 시각과 어떻게 다른지 이해하고 나누고 싶습니다. 이 젊은이 비느하스는 대놓고 이스라엘과 미디안의 고위층 자녀인 시므리와 고스비를 죽임으로써 실제로 무슨 일을 한 것일까요? 이 젊은이 비느하스는 혼란에 빠진 이스라엘의 지도자들과 모세와 아론과 이스라엘의 장로들의 연약함, 주님의 성막 바깥에 속수무책으로 서서 주님의 성막 뜰에서 포르노 쇼를 수수방관 지켜만 보며 주님의 성막을 신성모독하는 이 끔찍한 사건 때문에 당황하고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

젊은 비느하스는 이스라엘의 장로들이 속수무책으로 아무것도 하지 못하고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 비느하스는 어떤 권위도 허락도 없었지만, 직접 법을 집행하며, 모세나 장로들에게서 허락을 구하지 않고 창을 들어 성범죄자 둘의 몸을 뚫어 땅에 박아버립니다. 보통 승인되지 않은 그러한 행동, 살인은 이스라엘 백성의 지도자에게서 정죄 받았을 것입니다. 이스라엘에 있는 저희는 비슷한 사건이 벌어지는 것을 봅니다. 아직 훈련받고 있는 젊은 군인이 상관에게서 허락을 구하지 않고 테러리스트를 총으로 사살하거나 테러리스트가 다른 군인을 칼로 찌르려 할 때 그 테러리스트를 가격하여 쓰러뜨리는 그런 사건들이 있습니다.

이 이스라엘 군인은 군사 법정에서 재판받고 일정 기간 수감되는 선고를 받았습니다. 그러나 이번 토라 포션에서 우리는 하나님께서 제사장 아론의 손자 비느하스의 솔선수범과 그의 용기와 그의 신속한 조치와 주님의 성막 뜰에서 성범죄를 저지른 자들을 창의적으로 처형한 것을 칭찬하시고 그에게 상을 주시는 것을 봅니다.

“핀하스(비느하스)”라고 하는 이 토라 포션에서 우리는 무엇을 배울 있을까요?

2. 하나님께서는 위험과 적의 불법 행위에 맞서 행동이 취해졌을 때 경직적으로 율법적이거나 까다롭지 않으십니다. 정부 지도자들이 뭘 해야 할지 몰라 굳어 얼어붙어 있을 때, 여러분은 여러분이 하셔야 하는 일을 하십시오. 여러분은 하나님께는 옳고 의로운 일을 하도록 인도하는 내장된 나침반이 있다는 것을 아는 사람을 (거의 대부분) 좋아합니다. 불확실의 시대에 법의 바퀴가 굴러 처벌하기를 기다리기보다 뭔가를 하는 것이 최선입니다.

3. 비느하스는 그가 옳다고 이해하는 것을 하며 기꺼이 그 땅의 법 앞에서 그의 행동의 결과를 받아들이려고 했습니다.

4. 반면에, 하나님께서는 비느하스의 행동을 보시고 염병을 그치셨습니다. 그분께서는 비느하스의 용감한 솔선수범에 보상하시어 그를 이스라엘 군대 장관으로 임명하십니다.

이 교훈은 건강한 사법 시스템이 작동하고 있는 준법 국가의 준법 시민에게는 어렵습니다. 직접 법을 집행한 비느하스의 경우, 비느하스는 하나님으로부터 벌을 받지 않았고, 자기 자신보다 백성과 공의를 더 신경 쓰는 사람의 좋은 모범으로 사용되고 있습니다. 그에게는 하나님 앞에서의 그의 행동의 결과가 그 땅의 법 앞에서의 결과보다 더 중요했습니다.

저는 사람이 문뜩 떠오르는 생각으로 직접 법을 집행하라는 의미로 말씀드리는 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 사람이 법의 약점과 지도자들의 무력함과 적의 가증함을 보았다면, 네, 그 사람은 적의 가증한 행동을 멈추고 시민들에게 사회와 나라 조직에 실존하는 위험을 드러내는 위험을 멈추기 위해 수중에 있는 것을 사용해야 합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 18 July, 2025

This week’s Torah reading is another one of my favorites because it demonstrates that our God, the creator of this universe, the father of Yeshua our Messiah, and the Lord of our planet Earth, is not a legalistic, harsh, and autocratic ruler. Our reading is a dramatic approval of human dignity by divine authority.

We read this Shabbat from the book of Numbers 25:10-30:1, five chapters that describe the last events that occurred not long before the children of Israel crossed the Jordan.

From the prophets (the Haftarah) is from Jeremiah 1:1–2:3. Our reading from the New Testament is from John 2:13-22.

There is one thing that I can testify about the reading and discussion of our Torah and Prophets and New Testament, it is always interesting and challenging to my interests and inspiring to my spirit to read and see how God deals with people, with us as individuals and collectively. I strongly recommend that you read every week the same portions from God’s word that all religious Israelis read on Shabbat.

Two things will happen to you:

1) Your knowledge and understanding of the Bible will increase dramatically in three years.

2) You will suddenly enjoy the biblical narrative and understand that the Bible is a book with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It contains the autobiography of humanity with important implications for your life now! Of course, it was recommended by the apostles in the Acts 15 meeting in Jerusalem to decide how to receive the new converts from among the non-Jewish nations into the fold and community of the disciples of Yeshua inside the greater Israel. Here is the text from the book of Acts:

“Therefore, I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” Acts 15:19-21 NKJV

The name of our Torah reading on this Shabbat is also unusual. It is named after a person, not an event. We don’t have a Torah portion named after Moses or Aaron, or Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron. Our reading is called Pinchas.

So what is so important about the name of this young Levite mentioned in a Torah portion from the family of Aaron? Pinchas was a grandson of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

Here is the story of Pinchas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest:

“Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. Therefore say, “Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.” (Numbers 25:7-13 NKJV).

What is going on here, my dear friends and brothers? This young man, Pinchas, took the law into his own hands. Moses, Aaron, and the elders of Israel stood there and watched the abomination that was going on right at the entrance to the Tabernacle of the Lord, right under the presence of God and His glory. Do you remember the reading from last week where the magic and curses of Balaam and his donkey tried to put on Israel, but didn’t work?

Balaam still wanted his payment in gold, and he advised how to win the battle against Israel. Take the beautiful young girls of Moab and send them to seduce the men of Israel. This is a sure way that will make Israel fall. This is what Barak did, and now we see that God was so displeased with Israel’s young and old men that a plague was sent to punish Israel for being so weak and unaware of what was going on in the camp of Israel. It is hard to understand this story without reading a good portion of the biblical text:

“Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the LORD, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.” So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor.” And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. Therefore say, “Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”

Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites. And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.” (Numbers 25:1-15 NKJV).

Now I would like to understand and share with you how God sees things from the heavens above and how different God’s perspective is from our views below. What did this young man, Pinchas, actually do by publicly killing Zimri and Cozbi, the two noble children of Israel and Midian? This young man, Pinchas, sees the weakness and the confused leaders of Israel, Moses, Aaron, and all the elders of Israel, standing outside the Tabernacle of the Lord, helpless and standing and watching the pornographic show in the courtyard of the Tabernacle of the Lord, ringing their hands, bewildered by the horror of this event and the desecration of the tabernacles of the Lord.

Pinchas, a young man, sees the elders of Israel helpless and doing nothing. Although he has no authority or permission, Pinchas takes the law into his own hands, doesn’t ask permission from Moses and the elders to take action, and spears the two sex offenders through their bodies right into the ground. Usually, such unauthorized action, murder, would be condemned by the leadership of the people of Israel. We in Israel had similar events happen. Events where a young soldier still in training shot a terrorist dead without asking for permission from his superior officer. He hit the terrorist when he tried to stab another soldier with a knife.

The Israeli soldier had a military court case and was sentenced to be jailed for a time. However, in our Torah reading, we see that God praises and rewards Pinchas, the priest son of Aaron, for his initiative, his courage, and his quick action and demonstration of courage and creative execution of the sex offenders in the court of the Tabernacle of the Lord.

What can we learn from this Torah portion called Pinchas?

1. When the leadership of Israel is dumbfounded and does not know how to deal with horrible, unspeakable, and unimaginable events, someone has the unauthorized right to do what is right and righteous to stop the damage and abomination, even without authorization by the authorities and leaders of the camp.

2. God is not legalistic and picky when action is taken in the face of danger and lawless action of the enemy. You do what you must, even if the government leaders don’t know what to do and are petrified, frozen in their shoes. You like (almost) every human being who knows God has a built-in compass that guides them to do what is right and righteous. In times of uncertainty, it is best to do something rather than wait for the wheels of the law to turn and give permission.

3. Pinchas did what he understood to be right and was ready to take the consequences of his action even before the law of the land.

4. On the other hand, God sees Pinchas's actions and stops the plague. He rewards Pinchas for his bravery and initiative and makes him the chief of staff of the Army of Israel.

This lesson is hard for every law-abiding citizen of a lawful country with a healthy operating legal system. In the case of Pinchas taking the law into his own hands = Pinchas is not punished by God and is used as a good example of someone who cares more about the people and righteousness than about himself. The consequences of his action before God are more important to him than before the law of the Land.

I am not suggesting that everyone with a whim should take the law into their own hands. But if a person sees the weakness of the law, the helplessness of the leadership, and the abominations of the enemy, yes, he should use what he has in his hands to stop the enemy's abominable actions and stop the danger of exposing the citizens to an existential danger to the very fabric of a society and nation.

Yes, I like Pinchas, the son of Eliezer the Priest! If there is no man in the room, please be the man! God rewarded Pinchas and didn’t punish him. He made this young man from the tribe of Levi the chief of staff of the Israeli armed forces. This Pinchas is mentioned 25 times in the Bible, all the way to the prophets of Israel and the books of Chronicles. He is a hero in the history of Israel. It is worth studying our Torah portion more deeply for this Shabbat.

The Prayer List

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 Ilana Ahijervie is a dear sister who is 99 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurkey.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

In the U.K.:

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

In Finland:

 I visited Mauno Lemponen and he is in good spirits. He shares that I can feel the love and prayers from around the world in his daily life. He has been diagnosed with cancer in advanced stages. We are asking for Gods Will to be done, giving him healthy days with family—prayers for Hilka, Miika, and Ester, who support each other.

 Keijo and Salme are doing well. Both Keijo and Salme need your prayers for their health issues.

 Pray for Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami, our dear sisters.

 Pray for Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia, Victor, Aaron Tani, and Hillel.

 Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see there children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.

In Italy:

 Roberto has reached out on behalf of his friend Nicoletta B whose father has passed way recently. Please pray for her spirit as she struggles with such loss.

In Denmark:

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

In Ethiopia:

 Diu G. has been sick with meningitis and he and his family are all in need of prayers for strength and healing to help him.

In Brazil:

 Ismael V ask for prayers for his parents: Ismael V 80 years old (Father) & Margarida Feliciana V, 75 years old (Mother). The mother has been suffering due to medical errors since 2008, and only a miracle can solve the situation. The father has prostate and vision problems.

 Max is anxious waiting for a court decision regarding documentation on his families jewish roots. Please keep Max and the courts outcome in your prayers.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 Pray for a dear sister named Claudia Rita Souze Arau. She has cancer and needs God’s healing hands to touch her with healing.

 Pray for Fatima Maria Docarmo Guimararaes - pray for her health and her granddaughters’ twin babies.

 Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker is suffering from back problems.

 Aratuza de Oliveira and his wife. Pray for their 3-year-old child, Caique de Oliveira Becker, who has severe problems with his eyes, and ask the Lord to give healing to his eyes.

In Asia:

 Pray for Pastor T.J. in Taiwan.

 Pray for Deborah Ruth, a dear sister from China.

 Pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan.

 Tony Tam, his wife Luisa, and his son Marco need special prayers for their situation.

 We continue to pray for Zhou Wenrian, Abe family, Toru San, Yumi Ohara, and her family: Deborah Ruth, Ayla, Daniel, and their daughter.

 Pray for Dr. Song, and his wife, Sister Harriet Kim and the KIBI Ministry.

In the United States of America:

 update Joseph & Marcia Shulam [7pm July 16th]
Mom is back in a rehab facility to get stronger. They placed her on IV fluids yesterday due to her not drinking enough fluids. Also her appetite is lacking. Dad slept there over night and is doing his best to help her eat. Dad will have another PET Scan this Friday. Keep him in prayers for good news.

 New Hester H in Virginia is in Beth's aunt and is back in the hospital with fluid on her lungs. she needs prayers for restoration so she can returned home.

 New Elisheva’s husband is having surgery on the 17th of July. She as asked for prayers for her and her son who has ADHD. Please pray for both of them to get better.

 Adam B. is asking for prayers for job security. The hatchet job cutting that is taking place in the USA is not without families that are impacted. Please keep Adam and his family in prayers for job security.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is Shirleyann's to find a different neurologist that will accept her insurance.

 update I spoke with Shirleyann. Her kidneys are not doing well and so is her heart. Please pray for her health to improve.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Jose needs your prayers for a blessing on his marriage to grow stronger and prayers for the birth of a Son.

 Aida Ramirez 99 yrs old she had her MRI done and they are waiting for the results on the 23 of the month.

 Aida Gonzalez is still dealing with back pain. continue to pray for her strength to care for he rmother.

 Update Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God both Bill and Jill are in remission. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B., his wife Aviva, their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
