주목하시기 바랍니다:
몇 년에 한 번씩 유월절이나 오순절 이후 몇 주 동안 이스라엘에서는, 세계의 다른 곳보다 한 토라 포션을 앞서 갑니다.
이번 주 토라 포션은 “바엩하난”인데요, 여러분은 여기에서 이것에 대해 배우실 수 있을 것입니다.
“하나님께서 기도에 ‘아니’라고 대답하실 때”
이번 안식일에 회당에서 읽을 토라 포션은 바엩하난(ואתחנן)이라고 부르며, 신명기 3:23~7:11입니다. 이 토라 포션은 모세오경의 모든 토라 포션 중에서 가장 슬픈 토라일 것입니다. 이 토라 포션의 첫 구절의 뜻은 “그 때에 내가 여호와께 간구했다!”인데요, 히브리어의 “바엩하난”이란 단어를 좀 더 범속한 단어로 번역하자면 “내가 구걸했다!”입니다. 이 모세는 애굽의 바로의 궁궐에서 자란 애굽 왕자입니다. 그는 시내산 정상에서 40주야를 온 우주의 창조주와 독대했던 사람입니다. 그는 주전 두 번째 천년 시대에 이스라엘을 고무했고, 이후 계속 지구라고 불리는 하나님의 푸른 천체의 수십억 사람들을 고무하고 있습니다. 그런 그가 전능자께서 아브라함와 그의 후손에게 영원한 기업으로 주신 그 땅에 발을 디뎌보기라도 하게 요단강을 건너게 해달라고 하나님께 간구, 구걸하고 있는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 이렇게 대답하십니다: “여호와께서 너희 때문에 내게 진노하사 내 말을 듣지 아니하시고 내게 이르시기를 그만해도 족하니 이 일로 다시 내게 말하지 말라.” (신명기 3:26) 이 토라 포션이 저에게 매우 중요하고, 또 제가 이 포션이 우리 모두를 위한 것이라고 믿는 이유는 누군가로부터 내가 정말로 매우 원하는 것에 대해 “아니!”라는 대답을 듣고 싶지 않기 때문입니다. 특히 내 친구라고 생각하는 누군가에게 나에게 매우 중요한 것을 구걸했는데 “아니!”라는 대답을 듣는다면, 저는 속상할 것 같습니다. 사실, 친한 친구나 나와 좋은 관계로 협력하며 함께 보낸 시간이 많이 쌓인 지인이 그랬다면 대부분의 사람들이 속상할 것이라고 생각합니다. 그 사람에게 어떤 비용도 들지 않는 것을 내가 필요로 하거나 원하는데 그 사람이 내 요청을 단호히 거부하며 나에게 “나는 그러고 싶지 않아!”라고 말하는 정당한 이유를 주지 않는다면, 그것은 저를 화나게 하고 저를 매우 비참하게 만들 것 같습니다. 이 문제를 더 복잡하게 만드는 것은 하나님께서 모세에게 대답하시는 방식입니다. 하나님께서 그분의 종 모세에게 말씀하신 것은 속된 표현으로 하자면, “입 닥쳐라. 나는 너의 이 요청을 더 듣고 싶지 않다!”입니다. 이 본문에서 일을 더욱 슬프고 어렵게 만드는 것은 하나님께서 모세에게 “입 닥치고, 산에 올라가 거기서 죽으라 …”고 말씀하시는 것입니다. 여러분은 하나님께서 친히 120세 노인인 주의 종 모세에게 이렇게 말씀하시는 것을 상상할 수 있겠습니까: “이르시되 내 말을 들으라 너희 중에 선지자가 있으면 나 여호와가 환상으로 나를 그에게 알리기도 하고 꿈으로 그와 말하기도 하거니와 내 종 모세와는 그렇지 아니하니 그는 내 온 집에 충성함이라 그와는 내가 대면하여 명백히 말하고 은밀한 말로 하지 아니하며 그는 또 여호와의 형상을 보거늘 …” (민수기 12:6–8) 여기서 우리 모두가 하나님을 조금 더 잘 이해하는 데 도움이 되게 할 질문이 생깁니다: “하나님께서는 왜 모세가 이스라엘 자손과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 함께 요단강을 건너 그들을 이끌어 가나안 땅을 정복하도록 허락하지 않으셨는가?” 저는 정말로 하나님께서 모세 자신에게 최선인 것과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손에게도 최선인 것을 생각하셨다고 믿습니다. 지도자는 물러날 때를 알아야 하고 그 지휘봉을 다음 세대 지도자에게 넘겨주어야 합니다. 이 경우, 모세가 이스라엘 자손들과 함께 요단강을 건너는 것이 허락되지 않은 것은 하나님의 은혜입니다. 모세는 이스라엘 역사에서 뿐만 아니라 기독교와 이슬람 역사에서도 이스라엘 자손의 가장 위대한 지도자였습니다. 그러나 그는 가나안 땅을 정복할 때 이스라엘 자손을 인도하는 데에 필요한 완전히 다른 리더십 스타일과 형태에 방해가 되기도 하고 부적당하기도 했을 것입니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 “입 닥치라. 이 문제에 대해 너한테서 더 듣고 싶지 않다! 그냥 산에 올라가 거기서 죽으라!” 말씀하셨을 때 모세에게 좋은 것만 생각하셨다는 것을 제가 어떻게 아느냐고요? 여호수아서의 첫 구절들을 보십시오: “여호와의 종 모세가 죽은 후에 여호와께서 모세의 수종자 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 말씀하여 이르시되 내 종 모세가 죽었으니 이제 너는 이 모든 백성과 더불어 일어나 이 요단을 건너 내가 그들 곧 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 그 땅으로 가라.” (여호수아 1:1–2) 하나님께서는 모세가 요단강가에 서서 요단강을 건너는 이스라엘 자손의 무리를 지켜보며 모세만 뒤에 남는 것을 원하지 않으셨습니다. 하나님께서는 먼저 모세를 느보(미스바)산으로 올려보내 죽게 하신 후에 여호수아에게 이스라엘 자손과 함께 요단강을 건너라고 명령하셨습니다. 그것은 그분의 종 모세의 감정에 대한 순수한 궁휼과 배려에서 나온 것이었습니다. 우리는 삶에서 일어나는 일이 우리가 원하거나 바라던 대로 되지 않을 때, 자주 잊혀지는 거룩한 원칙을 기억해야 합니다: “이와 같이 성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라 마음을 살피시는 이가 성령의 생각을 아시나니 이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구하심이니라 우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라 하나님이 미리 아신 자들을 또한 그 아들의 형상을 본받게 하기 위하여 미리 정하셨으니 이는 그로 많은 형제 중에서 맏아들이 되게 하려 하심이니라 또 미리 정하신 그들을 또한 부르시고 부르신 그들을 또한 의롭다 하시고 의롭다 하신 그들을 또한 영화롭게 하셨느니라.” (로마서 8:26–30) 우리가 로마서 8장 28절을 인용할 때 “우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라.”고 말합니다. 우리는 종종 자연스러운 맥락의 말씀을 가져와 모든 경우와 모든 사람에 맞는 만능패가 되게 만듭니다. 그러나 더 정확한 의미는 우리가 주님을 사랑하고 그분의 목적에 따라 살고 섬기도록 부르심을 받았기 때문에, 주님께서 모든 것을 우리 자신의 유익을 위해 합당하고 온전하게 만드신다는 것일 것입니다. 모세의 경우가 그러했습니다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 좋은 것을 먼저 생각하시어, 모세가 강둑에 서서 이스라엘 자손이 요단강을 건너는 것을 보면서 자신이 뒤에 남아야 하는 것을 속상해 하지 않도록, 온 이스라엘 백성이 요단강 건너는 것을 미루셨습니다. 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 하나님께서는 우리를 정말로 사랑하시며, 때로는 그 사랑 때문에 그리고 그분께서 우리에게 최선이 무엇인지 알고 계시기 때문에 “아니!”라고 말씀하신다는 핵심 진리를 깨달읍시다. 우리의 야망과 욕망과 갈망이 항상 우리에게 좋은 것은 아니며, 좋은 아버지인 어른은 모두 자녀에게 똑같이 하고 “아니!”라고 말합니다. 어린 시절, 우리는 이런 일이 일어날 당시에는 이것을 이해하지 못하지만, 세월이 흐른 후에는 이해합니다. 우리는 우리 가족들이 우리에게 “아니!”라고 말할 때 우리를 향한 지혜와 사랑을 봅니다. 하나님께서 여러분에게 “아니!”라고 말씀하시면, 그분께서 여러분에게 “좋다, 착하고 충성된 종아!”라고 말씀하실 때처럼, 그분의 지혜와 사랑에 대해 감사하십시오.

저의 사랑하는 아내는 심한 당뇨병과 류마티스 관절염과 지금은 기억력 소실로 고생하고 있습니다. 마르시아는 치매 진단을 받았습니다. 소아기 발병 당뇨병이 기억력 문제를 일으켰을 수 있습니다. 마르시아는 혼자 남겨두면 안 돼서, 저는 일주일의 대부분의 날을 집에 있어야 합니다. 그리고 제가 집을 떠날 일이 있으면, 누군가 마르시아가 인슐린을 복용하는지 확인하기 위해 와서 함께 있어야 합니다.

Please note:
Every few years for a few weeks following either Passover or Shavuot, in Israel, we are one Torah portion ahead of the rest of the world.
This week’s portion is Va’etchanan, which you will learn about here.
"When God answers prayers with a 'No'"
The Torah portion that synagogues are going to be reading this Shabbat is called Va’etchanan, (ואתחנן) from Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11. This Torah reading in my opinion is probably one of the saddest of all Torah portions in the five books of Moses. The first words of this Torah portion and the meaning of the word “Va’etchanan” in Hebrew is: Vaetchanan "Then I pleaded with the LORD!” A more pedestrian word to translate the Hebrew is “I begged!” This is the prince of Egypt, the one that was raised in Pharaoh’s palaces in Egypt. This is the man who was 40 days and nights on the top of Mount Sinai in a personal one to one time with the Creator of the Universe. This is the man who inspired Israel in the second millennium B.C. and continues to inspire billions of people around the God’s blue orb that we call Earth. He is pleading, begging, God to cross the Jordan River, just to put his foot on the land that the Almighty gave to Abraham and to his seed as an everlasting inheritance. God answers Moses with these words: “But the LORD was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me. So, the LORD said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter.” (Deuteronomy 3:26) The reason that this Torah portion is so important for me, and I believe for all of us is that I don’t like to get a “No!” answer from anyone if I really want something bad enough. Especially If I beg someone for something that is very important for me, and I think that that person is my friend getting a “NO!” answer makes me upset. In fact, I think that most people would feel upset if a close friend or even just a good acquaintance with whom I have had good relationship and a backlog of time spent together and cooperation. If I need or want something that would not cost the person anything and he just flat rejects my request and doesn’t give me a good reason why he tells me, “I don’t want to!” It would make me angry and may cause me deep unhappiness. What makes this more complex is the style of the answer that God gives Moses: In the vernacular God tells Moses His servant, “Shut your mouth, I don’t want to hear more of this request from you! The text makes it ever more sad and difficult, God tells Moses, “Shut your mount” and go up the mountain and die there…” Can you imagine Moses 120-year-old man, servant of the Lord of whom God Himself said: “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses, He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And he sees the form of the LORD.” (Numbers 12:6–8 NKJV) Here comes the question that ought to help us all understand God just a little better: “Why didn’t God allow Moses to cross the Jordan River together with the children of Israel and with Joshua the Son of Nun leading them into the conquest of the land of Canaan?” I really believe that God was thinking only of what is best for Moses himself and what is also best for Joshua the son of Nun and the children of Israel. Leaders must know when to step down and pass that baton to the next generation of leaders. In this case, it was by the grace of God that Moses was not allowed by God to cross the Jordan River with the children of Israel. Moses was the greatest leader of the children of Israel in the history of Israel, but also in the history of both Christianity and Islam. But he would have been both in the way and unhappy with the much-needed totally different style and mode of leadership need to lead the children of Israel in the conquest of the land of Canaan. How do I know that God took into consideration only what is good for Moses when He told Moses, “Shut your mouth, I don’t want to hear from you on this issue anymore! Just go up the mountain and die there!” Look at the first verses of the book of Joshua: “After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all these people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel.” (Joshua 1:1–2 NKJV) God didn’t want Moses standing on the banks of the river Jordan and watching the hordes of the children of Israel crossing the Jordan River and He, Moses, staying behind. He sent Moses up to the mountain of Nebo (Mizpah) to die first before He gave Joshua the marching orders to cross the Jordan River with the children of Israel. It was out of pure mercy and consideration for the feelings of His servant Moses. We must remember that Holy Principle that is often forgotten by us when things in our lives don’t go the way we wanted or wished them to go: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.” (Romans 8:26–30 NKJV) When we quote Romans 8:28, and say: “And we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” We often take the words of their natural context and make them have a card-blanche for all occasions and for all people. But the more correct meaning would be that the LORD makes all things that are fit and equip us for our own good because we love the Lord and because we are called to live and serve according to His purpose. This was the case with Moses, God took into consideration what is good for Moses first and postponed the whole nation of Israel from crossing the Jordan River to save Moses’ feeling bad to see the children of Israel crossing the river and Moses standing on the banks of the river feeling really bad that he has to stay behind. Let us all, dear brothers realize that central truth that God really loves us, and sometimes He says “NO!” to us because of that Love and because He knows what is best for us. Our ambitions and desires and appetites are not always good for us and each adult person that is a good father does the same to his children and tells them “NO!” As children, we don’t understand this when it happens but years later. We see the wisdom and love that our family had for us when they told us, “NO!” Thank God for His wisdom and for His love when He tells you “NO!” Just as much as when He tells you, “Yes, my good and faithful servant!”.

Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
David Stern, a dear old brother, and friend. Suffering from advanced stages of Parkinson’s.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
My dear wife is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. She was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems. Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
