예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 2월 25일

예루살렘에서는 이번 주말이 에스더의 절기 – 부림절입니다! 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 “테짜베”(너는 명할지니라), 출애굽기 27:30~30:10입니다. 선지서에서 읽는 말씀은 에스겔 43:10-27입니다. 신약성경에서는 히브리서 13:10-17을 읽을 것입니다.
저는 부림절에 대해 조금 나누고 싶습니다. 에스더서는 가까스로 정경이 된 책으로, 가장 마지막으로 유대교 정경에, 그에 따라 기독교 정경에 들어온 책 중 하나입니다. 왜 에스더서가 유대교 정경에 포함되는 데에 어려움이 있었느냐고요? 왜 사해 쿰란공동체에 히브리성경의 모든 책의 증거는 있지만 에스더서의 증거는 전혀(작은 조작조차도) 없는 것일까요? 신약성경에는 부림절이나 에스더나 모르드개를 언급한 일이 없습니다. 그 이유는 여러 가지입니다: 1. 에스더서 전체에 하나님이 한 번도 언급되지 않습니다. 2. 에스더서의 도덕성과 윤리 수준은 표준 이하이며 토라의 기본 원칙에 반합니다. 3. 유대인 모르드개는 그의 질녀 하닷사에게 그녀의 정체를 숨기라고 가르치고 그녀에게 “에스더”(“이쉬타르”)라는 이교도의 이름을 줍니다. 그는 페르시아왕의 후궁이 되어 왕궁의 후궁에 살도록 하닷사를 보냅니다. 이교도 왕의 후궁의 음식은 분명 코셔가 아닐 것입니다. 에스더서가 히브리성경의 정경으로 거의 들어가지 못할 뻔 했던 사소한 다른 이유들도 더 있습니다. 어쨌든, 저는 에스더서가 히브리성경에도 기독교성경에도 정경에 포함된 것이 아주 기쁩니다. 에스더서와 부림절이 제 신앙에 깊이 배어든 것이 감사하고 기쁜 이유는 이렇습니다. 제 생일은, 몇 년은, 바로 부림절과 일치했고 대부분은 부림절이 든 주간에 듭니다. 그러면 제가 왜 에스더서를 좋아하고, 이 책을 연구하고 깊이 파고 이 짧은 책의 모든 뉘앙스를 이해하는 것이 기쁜 것일까요? 1. 제가 믿음을 가진 60년 세월 대부분에 저는 하나님을 똑같은 방식으로 경험했습니다. 숨겨진 분으로도 여기 지상의 우리 인간 사이에 그분의 행동으로 가시적인 분으로도 경험했습니다. 그렇습니다, 저는 산들을 옮기시는 주님의 감춰진 손을 본 적은 있지만, 매주 월요일과 목요일에 창조주와 말하는 특권을 누려본 적은 없습니다. 사실, 정치적으로 옳지 않을 위험을 무릅쓰고, 저는, 자기가 하나님께서 자기에게 말씀하시어 어디로 차를 몰고 가고 어디에 주차할 곳을 알려주셨다는 계시와 환상이 있었다고 말한 것을 제가 들은 사람들 대부분이 이스라엘의 주 하나님의 진짜 선지자나 종이 아니라는 것이 입증되어 다행히 여긴다는 점을 분명히 말해야 할 것 같습니다. 2. 그렇습니다, 에스더서에 하나님이 한 번도 언급되지는 않지만, 여러분이 그 책을 읽을 때 여러분은 역사 속에, 유대인 모르드개와 에스더 왕비의 삶 속에서 뿐만 아니라, 유대인이든 페르시아인이든 그 책에 언급된 모든 인물의 삶 속에 움직이고 계시는 하나님의 손을 볼 수 있습니다. 에스더서에서 하나님께서는 변함없이 만물을 움직이시는 분이십니다. 마스터 체스 기사처럼 하나님께서는 왕비와 왕과 왕의 경호원들과, 두 말 할 것 없이, 사울왕이 남겨두어 선지자 사무엘이 와서 끝장 내버린 아말렉 아각왕의 후손인 하만까지 움직이고 계십니다. 하만은 아각의 후손이었습니다. 그래서 아각 사람이라고 불린 것입니다! 3. 저는 여러 인물들 하나하나가 “알려지지 않은” 하나님에 의해, 역사를 바꾸고 페르시아제국의 유대인들을 구하는 데 필요한 일을 하고 역할을 하도록 움직여지고 사용되고 있습니다! 여러분이 단편소설을 읽는 것처럼 에스더서를 읽으면서 모든 세세한 작은 일에 주의를 기울인다면, 저는, 여러분이 읽은 내용과 그 안에서 얻는 통찰을 즐거워할 뿐만 아니라, 심지어 우리 시대에도 하나님께서 어떻게 역사하시는지 더 잘 이해하게 될 것이라고 확신합니다. 이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션에는 제사장들의 의복과 성막 건축과 관련한 모든 설명을 담고 있습니다. 여기에서 여러분은 의복의 모든 부분과, 장막 형태의 임시 장막에서 사용될 모든 도구와 기구에 대한 아주 상세한 설명을 읽을 수 있습니다. 우리는 이 임시 장막에 아주 많이 들인 금과 은의 정교한 장식과, 자주, 청색실과, 동물 가죽과, 조각목의 정교함과, 모든 것을 주님께서 친히 지시하시고 규정하신 목적이 무엇인지 질문해봐야 할 것입니다. 오늘 우리에게는 장막도 성전도 없습니다. 우리에게는 금 흉패나, 성소에서 섬기는 대제사장이나 그 어떤 제사장도 없습니다. 여러분이 이 토라 포션에 계속되는 이야기를 읽다보면, 모세의 형 대제사장 아론의 아들들조차 죄를 지어 제단에 이상한 불을 가져왔다가 그 자리에서 죽은 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 우리는 무엇을 세우고 성막이 어떻게 갖춰져야 하는지에 대해 아주 상세한 지시사항이 이행되고 주님의 임재가 밤낮으로 그 위에 임한 직후에도, 진영 안에 여전히 죄가 있었음을, 그것도 더 큰 죄가, 심지어 모세의 형 아론의 손으로 심각한 죄를 지어 주님과 친동생 모세를 배신하는 일이 있었음을 읽습니다. 제가 이 토라 포션을 읽으면서 배우는 것은 다음과 같습니다: 1. 주님께서는 세세한 것에 주의를 기울이시며, 뭔가 되게 하기를 원하실 때, 분명한 지시를 주시고 그분의 종들이 그것들을 따르고 그분께서 명하신 그대로 하기를 기대하신다는 것입니다. 2. 훌륭하고 아름답고 성화된 예배 장소가 있다고 해서, 심지어 창조주께서 친히 명령하신 장소일지라도, 그곳에서 일어나는 일이 하나님을 기쁘시게 한다거나, 낮에는 구름기둥, 밤에는 불기둥 아래 있는 그 안에서 심각한 죄가 일어나지 않도록 해준다고 보장하는 것은 아니라는 것입니다. 하나님께서 아주 상세히 규정하신 그대로 하나님을 예배한다고 해도 그것이 여러분의 예배가 주님께 받아들여질 만하다는 것을 보장하는 것은 아닙니다. 여러분은 성경에서 대제사장 아론의 아들들 나답과 아비후를 포함하여 대제사장이나 대제사장의 자식들이 죄를 지어 그 죄 때문에 무자비하게 벌을 받은 이야기를 볼 수 있습니다. 3. 예배는 마음으로 진실 되고 순전한 동기로 드릴 때에만 특권이며 축복이 됩니다. 브로드웨이 쇼같이 보이는 웅장하고 화려하고 전문적인 예배가 꼭 예배자의 진짜 마음을 나타내는 진실된 예배의 표현이 아닐지도 모릅니다. 저는 제가 폭이 아주 넓은 붓으로 큰 붓놀림으로 그림을 그리고 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 저는 어느 한 개인을 특정지어 비난하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 이번 토라 포션에서 배울 수 있는 성경적 패러다임을 지적하는 것이며, 주님과 그분의 임재 앞과 그분의 사람들 앞에 겸손한 자세를 가지는 것을 배우자는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님께서 우리 마음 속, 우리의 내면을 들어다 보시며, 모든 육체를 그 마음 속에 있는 것으로 판단하신다는 것을 기억해야 합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – February 25, 2021

This weekend in Jerusalem is the Feast of Esther – Purim! The Torah reading for this Shabbat is from the portion “Tetzaveh” (You shall command) Exodus 27:30-30:10. The reading from the Prophets is from Ezekiel 43:10-27. From the New Testament we will read Hebrews 13:10-17.
I would like to share a little about the Feast of Purim. The book of Esther as regards the canon of the Bible was hanging by a thread and is one of the last books that entered into the Jewish canon and therefore also into the Christian canon. Why did the book of Esther have such a hard time being included into the Jewish canon? Why is there evidence in the Qumran community at the Dead Sea, evidence of every book in the Hebrew Bible but no evidence at all (not even a small fragment) from the book of Esther? There is also no mention of the Feast of Purim or of Esther or of Mordechai in the New Testament. The reasons are numerous: 1. God is not mentioned at all in the whole book of Esther. 2. The level of morality and ethics in the book of Esther is below standard and contrary to the basic rules of the Torah. 3. Mordechai the Jew teaches his niece Hadassah to hide her identity and gives her a pagan name “Esther” (“Ishtar”). He sends her to be the concubine of the King of Persia and to live in the king’s palace harem. The food in the pagan king’s harem would for sure not have been kosher. There are other minor reasons why the book of Esther almost didn’t enter into the canon of the Hebrew Bible. However, I am very happy that the book of Esther is in the canon of the Bible both in the Hebrew Bible and also in the Christian Bibles. Here are the reasons for my appreciation and joy to have the book of Esther and the Feast of Purim deeply engrained into my faith. My birthday, some years, is right on the Feast of Purim and most years it is during the week of Purim. So, why do I like the book of Esther and why I am happy to study and dig deep into it, to understand every nuance in this short book? 1. For most of my 60 years in the faith, I have experienced God in the same way, as being both hidden and tangible through His actions down here among us humans. Yes, I have seen the hidden hand of the Lord moving mountains, but I have not had the privilege of speaking to the Creator every Monday and Thursday. In fact in spite of my fear of not being politically correct, I would clearly say that most of those whom I have heard claiming to have revelations and visions with God speaking to them and telling them where to drive to, to find parking, have proven to my satisfaction, that they are not true prophets or servants of the Lord God of Israel. 2. Yes, God is not mentioned at all in the book of Esther, but when you read the book you see the hand of God moving in history, not only in the life of Mordechai the Jew and Queen Esther, but also in every one of the characters mentioned in the book, both the Jews and the Persians. In the book of Esther, God is the unmoved mover of all things. Like a master Chess player God moves the queen and the king and the king’s guards, and of course Haman the descendent of Agag, the Amalekite king, whom King Saul spared and Samuel the prophet came and gave Agag his last and very close haircut. Haman was a descendent of Agag and that is why he is called the Agagite! 3. I love the way the different characters, every one of these characters, are moved and used by the “unknown” God to function and do what is necessary to change history and to save the Jewish population of the Persian Empire! If you read the book of Esther like reading a short novel, and pay attention to all of the small details, I am sure that you will both enjoy the reading and also receive insight into, as well as a better understanding, of how God works, even in our own days. The Torah portion that is read on this Shabbat contains a description of all of the clothing and of the instruments of the priests and of the building of the Tabernacle. Where you can read in great detail, the descriptions of every piece of clothing, and of every tool and instrument to be used in that temporary tent-type tabernacle. We ought to ask what is the purpose of all of this elaboration and of all of the fancy detailed gold and silver and purple, royal blue, animal furs and acacia wood that is so much is invested in this temporary tabernacle, everything being dictated and prescribed by the Lord Himself. Today we have neither a tabernacle nor a temple. We don’t have a golden breastplate or even a high priest or any priests that are serving in a holy place. When you read the subsequent stories in the Torah you find out that even the sons of the high priest Aaron, the brother of Moses, sinned and brought strange fire to the altar and died on the spot. We read that right after the very detailed instructions of what to build and how to equip the tabernacle were carried out, and the presence of the Lord was on it by day and by night, there was still sin in the camp, even augmented sin, and even in the hands of Aaron the brother of Moses who sinned gravely and betrayed the Lord and his brother, Moses. What I learn from this Torah reading is the following: 1. The Lord pays attention to details and when He wants something done, He gives clear instructions and expects His servants to obey them and to do exactly what He has commanded. 2. Having a wonderful, beautiful, and sanctified place of worship even directly commanded by the Creator Himself does not guarantee that what is happening there is either pleasing to God or that serious sins are being prevented from happening right inside and under the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Worshiping God in the right way as He prescribed in such great detail, is not a guarantee that your worship is acceptable to the Lord. You have several stories in the Bible of the high priest, and of the children of the high priest, having sinned and being punished unmercifully for their sins, including Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, the high priest. 3. Worship is a privilege and a blessing but only if it is done from the heart and with sincere and pure motives. The grandiose and fancy and professional worship that looks like a Broadway show might not necessarily be an expression of sincere worship that expresses the true hearts of the worshippers. I realize that I am painting with a very wide brush in broad moves. I am not accusing any one individual specifically, but I am pointing out a biblical paradigm that we can learn from the Torah, and learn to take a humbler stance before the Lord and His presence and the people of God. We must remember that God looks into our hearts and into our inner parts and judges all flesh from what they have in their hearts.
Please continue to pray a special prayer for Marcia. Praise the Lord she received the first vaccination for the Coronavirus and on March 5th, the Lord willing she will receive the second vaccination. Marcia is definitely slowed down significantly. She has very little energy and she rests most of the day. I am praying and believing in the Lord’s grace for healing Marcia and restoring her ability to function and travel with me and to be a blessing to the local congregation and community and to our brothers and friends around the world. Pray for Marcia, please!

The Hamotzi program for feeding the needy of Jerusalem is ongoing and has not stopped during most of the coronavirus lock-down and quarantine. The number of needy people who come to receive food from our program has increased and overall need has increased.
Please continue to pray for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation.

Pray for all those wonderful, dedicated brothers and sisters in Korea who stood with Israel and with Netivyah to revive and to not forget their first love for Israel and for Netivyah.
Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her health and her situation. Our granddaughter Noam is a senior in high-school and working with Zoom to finish her high school. Pray for the Lord to give Noam guidance and direction for graduation from high school.
Our grandson Joseph also needs prayer to be able to get into college with proper scholarships. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson to be protected and spared any contact and infection of the coronavirus. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing.
Our dear sister Hadassah continues her healing and recovery from cancer. Keep her in your prayers.

Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.
Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.
Third please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children.
