======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 13 June, 2026
by Joseph Shulam The Torah portion Korach, reading from Numbers 16:1–18:32, is one of the most dramatic and relevant portions in the entire Torah. It deals with rebellion, leadership, divine authority, national crisis, and God's protection of His covenant people. The traditional Haftarah is from 1 Samuel 11:14–12:22, where the prophet Samuel addresses Israel after the establishment of the monarchy under Saul. These two readings are deeply connected. The Common Thread that connects these two texts is Rebellion Against God's Order. In the New Testament, these texts are complementary to the reading of the Torah portion of Korach. It is interesting to me that the New Testament explicitly mentions Korach: Jude 11, "Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah." Jude sees Korach as a permanent warning against spiritual pride and rebellion. Jude brings the two characters from the Torah that are considered as rebels and greedy: Balaam the one that was for personal gain of wealth was willing to curse Israel and Cain, the one who murdered his brother Abel out of pride and jealousy for God accepting Abel's sacrifice and rejecting his own sacrifice. There is nothing more horrible than murdering your brother because of pride and jealousy. Rebellion is never advisable for whatever reason or cause, but there is nothing more evil than murdering your brother because of jealousy. And Religious pride! Even if you don't go as far as murdering your brother for these false motives and reasons, the very idea that a sane person would murder his brother is so rebellious and evil that it can't be rationally explained. There is one more mention of Korach in the New Testament in the book of Hebrews 5:4. The writer of the book of Hebrews explains concerning Korach with the following words: "And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was." Korach's rebellion is like the murder of Abel by his brother Cain based on jealousy and Cain's desire for God to accept his sacrifice first that seize and be for God to accept his sacrifice first! This is a direct reflection on Korach's attempt to seize a position God had not given him. Korach is also mentioned in a similar context in the Gospel of Mark 10:42–45. Yeshua teaches: "Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant." Korach sought greatness through power and manipulation. Yeshua teaches greatness through service for others and not for personal gain. For me, the Korach Torah portion (Numbers 16:1–18:32) that will be read on Shabbat is one of the most dramatic and relevant portions in the entire Torah, fitting square for so much of the events that we experience these sad days in the Israeli political arena. It deals with a competitive attitude that always leads to rebellion against leadership and divine authority, and in the end makes for a national crisis. Thanks to God's protection of His covenant people and putting down the spirit of competition and rebellion that Korach and his gang are trying to take for themselves. In the Haftarah of Korach from 1 Samuel 11:14–12:22, the prophet Samuel addresses Israel after the establishment of the monarchy under Saul. The Common Thread: with a rebellious spirit of Korach against God's Order: is a rebellion not merely of a political disagreement. Korach, Dathan, Abiram, and the 250 leaders challenged the authority that God had given to Moses and Aaron. They were power hungry, and jealousy took their loyalty and commitment from the leadership of Moses and Aaron for themselves. "You take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation is holy…" (Numbers 16:3) On the surface, Korach sounded democratic and spiritual. He used language that appeared noble. But underneath was ambition, jealousy, and a desire for power. In the Haftarah from 1 Samuel 8:5, Samuel faces a similar situation. Israel demanded a king "like all the nations" (1 Samuel 8:5). The people were not merely rejecting Samuel; they were rejecting God's kingship. Samuel tells them: "You have this day rejected your God, who Himself saved you from all your adversities and your tribulations." (1 Samuel 10:19). Both texts teach that rebellion often disguises itself as wisdom, fairness, or progress. Lessons for Israel Today: 1. Internal Division Is More Dangerous Than External Enemies The greatest threat in Korach's story was not Egypt, Amalek, Moab, or Midian. The danger came from inside the camp. Korach was a Levite. Dathan and Abiram were Israelites. The 250 leaders were respected members of the community. The danger was internal fragmentation. Today, Israel faces threats from Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran, and even Turkey. But throughout Jewish history, internal division has often caused more damage than external enemies. The destruction of the Second Temple was attributed by the rabbis to sinat chinam (baseless hatred inside the camp of Israel). A nation divided against itself becomes vulnerable. Korach reminds us that unity around God's purposes is essential for survival of any nation, but for Israel it is absolutely essential. 2. God Judges Pride: Korach believed he deserved a higher position. His complaint was rooted in the question: "Why not me?" The prophets repeatedly teach that pride precedes destruction. Modern nations also suffer when leaders seek power rather than service. The lesson from the Torah portion Korach applies equally to politicians, rabbis, pastors, teachers, and ordinary believers. Leadership is stewardship, not entitlement. 3. God always protects His Covenant Purposes for the general people of His chosen nation. The earth swallowed Korach and his followers. The budding rod of Aaron (Numbers 17) became proof that God Himself chooses whom He will use. The lesson is that God's purposes do not depend on human popularity. For Israel today, this is encouraging. The enemies surrounding Israel often appear stronger, larger, and more numerous. Yet as always throughout Scripture, God repeatedly intervenes to preserve His covenant promises to his people. The Haftarah: Samuel's Warning! Samuel presents himself before the people and asks: "Whose ox have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed?" (1 Samuel 12:3) Samuel demonstrates integrity like Moses; both Moses and Samuel were accused, criticized, and questioned. Both remained faithful. The Jewish sages often connected these two leaders because both served Israel without enriching themselves. This is an important lesson for every generation: A true leader serves the people. A false leader uses the people to enrich himself. Connection with Iran and Hezbollah One lesson from Korach is that arrogance leads to judgment. The prophets repeatedly describe nations that exalt themselves against God and against Israel. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and the Psalms all warn that powers built on violence, hatred, and pride eventually collapse. Israel's security depends not only on military strength but also on faithfulness, justice, righteousness, and national unity. I fear that this war with Iran and its proxies is laced with some of the same indications that we read in this week's Torah portion and the Haftarah. Our prophets in the Bible consistently teach that moral and spiritual strength are the foundation of national security. The integrity of the government is much more dependent on the humility and consideration of the people than on the power that is self-serving and abusive to the general public of the nation. My Personal Lessons for Every Believer, and especially teachers and pastors, are: Do Not Confuse Position with Calling: Korach wanted Aaron's role. He was sure that he could do a better job than Aaron the High Priest. Many people spend their lives wanting another person's ministry, gifts, or success. God knows who we are and what we are capable of achieving and calls each person to a unique task. Leaders must be content with God's calling for them and bring peach and not contention and competition. Leaders, especially Jewish spiritual leaders, must produce peace and guard against jealousy and competition for leadership. Guard Against Jealousy: Jealousy destroyed Korach. Jealousy destroyed King Saul. Jealousy motivated many opponents of Yeshua. A jealous heart cannot rejoice in another person's blessing. Respect God-Given Authority This does not mean blind obedience to the leader: Moses himself was challenged when necessary. The lesson is to distinguish between constructive accountability and destructive rebellion. New Testament Connections The New Testament explicitly mentions Korach. Jude 11 "Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah." Jude sees Korach as a permanent warning against spiritual pride and rebellion. Hebrews 5:4. "And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was." The final lesson of our reading of Korach is that God is sovereign even when rebellion seems powerful. The earth opened beneath Korach, but God's covenant with Israel remained standing. Throughout history, empires have risen and fallen, yet the people of Israel continue because the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob remains faithful to His promises. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah
Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.
Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.

Update Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.
Jordan Issac - a prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)

Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.
Barbra and Angie are in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.
Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
