For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Romans 8:5-9
What does it mean to live according to the Spirit? Paul says that the thoughts of the Spirit are life and peace. Those who live by the Spirit think according to the way of the Spirit. We know that salvation is personal, so how does what Paul says apply to me as an individual? We live in a world where the communities we live in; our society, has the power to control and direct life. Our human nature causes us to want to be part of something bigger than ourselves. But what if this bigger something breaks the principles of God? Even worse, what if it begins according to God's principles and then turns into something which is no longer according to God's Will? When I look at Yeshua's ministry in Jerusalem, I see that during the day He was in the city where He walked among the crowds of people who came to worship God according to their understanding. Yeshua taught, encouraged and provoked the multitudes. This was in contrast to the Pharisees, Sadducees and other leadership which controlled the people. In the evening Yeshua returned to the Mount of Olives where He ministered to and taught His disciples on an intimate level, far from the multitudes. However, Jerusalem was always in sight as He taught from the Mount of Olives. My understanding is that Yeshua could visually zoom in and out. This is how we as Believers should function while living in our individual communities and in reaction to our surroundings and situations; in this world while not of the world. That is what Paul is referring to in Romans 8:29; that we will be conformed to Yeshua's image; to be a light to our surroundings. For this to happen, each one of us must set aside time, separated from all else; alone with Him. Again, life in Yeshua is personal and although it is important for the Body to come together and we gain strength in coming together, we can also hear from Him even when we are alone. Our peace does not come from large gatherings but from Yeshua; our confidence is in God. Like Yeshua; in Jerusalem and out on the Mt. of Olives; we should find the time when we too are in and out; following the direction of the Spirit of God. In this way we will be continually guided in our daily lives and the situations we are in. When I was a child and wanted to be like everyone else, my father asked me ïf everyone jumps off the roof will you jump after them"? As I got older I began to realize that if everyone went in one direction, I would find myself going in the opposite direction. Going in the opposite direction doesn't mean going in the wrong one. We are called to act differently; strangers in this world.
Where is my heart when I am worshipping with others? Am I so connected to the Spirit of God that even when in a large group I can hear His voice speaking directly to me? We must be available to hear God's voice and to walk according to His direction. This is how we may be a part of God building and strengthening our communities and congregations. This is how we may be used by Him; each in the gifts and calling He has given us; working together for His Glory. |
