======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – June 27, 2026

For the Diaspora, the next Shabbat (June 27, 2026 / 12 Tammuz 5786) is the combined Torah portion: Torah Reading: Chukat–Balak – these two connected Torah readings have some of the most significant and often misunderstood readings from the Torah. The first is the whole issue of the red Heifer from Numbers 19, and the second is the whole story of Moses striking the rock to get water for the children of Israel. The readings are unusually long because, according to tradition, we are reading a double portion from Numbers 19:1–25:9. Trying to explain Jewish tradition is something that is not easy because we don’t have one tradition, we have Ashkenazim tradition and Sephardim tradition, and if you look hard enough too you will find some more traditions hidden between the North African Jews and the Yemenite Jews. If you wish to look deeper, you might find some more traditions. Tovia from the film Fiddler on the Roof says it well, we have tradition for everything. In fact, this bunch of flowers of traditions makes our life full of colors and melodies and joy and also produce rich and interesting Shabbat tables with a variety of foods and songs in different languages. On the one hand celebrating the past and connections with our roots and on the other hand our Shabbat meals and the readings in the synagogue are always rich on the one hand and challenging on the other hand. This double portion includes: Chukat that has the whole issue of the Red Heifer (Numbers 19), and also the death of Miriam the sister of Moses, and also the death of Aaron Moses' elder brother and the high priest, and such things like Moses striking the Rock the second time and another mysterious hard to explain even of the making of the bronze snake in the wilderness! I would like to start with the portion Balak because it is one of my favorite texts in the Torah. 1. We have the King of Moab, who is faced with a dilemma. Moab is sitting on the King's highway on the east side of the Jordan River, hugging the Jordan valley. The water of the Jordan River comes from Mount Hermon and the other mountains of the north and descends down the Jordan valley alongside Samaria and down to the Judean Desert, all the way down to the Dead Sea. This, of course, is a great advantage, and it is what makes that highway so important. This factor is also what makes Moab and the King of Moab so important and powerful. 2. The Israelites that came from Egypt crossed the Negev desert south of the Dead Sea wanting to pass through this highway in order to enter the land of Canaan from the east right in the middle of the land and divide their enemies in half. This would make their task of taking the land easier. 3. Numbers 22:2. “Now Balak the son of Zippor the King of Moab saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people of Israel because of their numbers. Moab was sick with fear and dread because of the children of Israel’s strong force. So Moab said to the elders of Median, "Now this company will lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field." And Balak, the son of Zippor, was King of the Moabites at that time.” 4. The fact that Balak the son of Zippor the King of Moab has to send all the way to Mesopotamia to call Balaam the master magician to intervene and deliver the Moabites from the burden that they face with the children of Israel that only want to pass through their land on the King's highway and are even willing to pay for the water and the produce that they would use during their passage through the land of Moab is a sign of the fear and strain that the King of Moab Balak felt from the children of Israel. This is a point that is not always taken into account and properly understood. Balak, the King of Moab, hires Balaam to curse Israel because he understands that Israel is big and has already conquered the western Negev Desert and is crossing south of the Dead Sea into the territory of Moab. This is the reason that Balak wants additional card in his hand and invites Balaam to come down from the north and use magic and curses to stop Israel's advance on the other side of the Jordan and to deliver Moab from the burden of having a physical war with Moab. Balaam comes down from the north riding on his donkey. He has no clue that his donkey can speak! Balaam's prophecies start by blessing Israel with the following words: "How goodly are your tents, O Jacob…" (Numbers 24:5). Balak understands that he alone can't produce a victory over Israel. That is why he invites Balaam to come down and curse Israel. However, when he comes down from the north on his donkey, he suddenly understands that even his "magical powers" can't conquer or stop Israel from taking the land of Canaan. The Lord sends an angel to stop Balak from cursing Israel, and Balaam's donkey sees the angel even though Balaam himself doesn't see the angel of the Lord. The donkey tries in every way to keep Balaam from cursing Israel, but Balaam doesn't understand why his donkey is pushing him against the rocks and trying to make Balaam fall from his back. The donkey sees the angel of the Lord and wants to stop Balaam from cursing Israel. Balaam strikes the donkey, and finally, the donkey starts speaking to Balaam to prevent him from cursing Israel. This is one of the humorous stories in the Torah. Balaam's donkey is smarter than its master and sees more than the prophet Balaam sees. There is humor and sadness in the story, but the main point is that when God wants, even a jackass can speak and represent God's will better than the prophet himself. Israel is already near 3 years fighting a cursed war against numerous enemies with powerful backing from the evil empires of our world, Iran backed by Russia and China, and others that pretend that they are on Israel's side but actually they are only for themselves and use Israel as an excuse to magnify their own name and get a Nobel Peace prize. I wish that in our own days a donkey would speak to some of those leaders of the world that out of purely selfish reasons want to see Israel defeated and even destroyed. The reading from the prophets on this Shabbat is also connected to our Torah portion. The reading is from the prophet Micah 5:8–6:8, that is also connected to our Torah portion from Numbers 19:1–25:9. The prophet Micah returns to the story of Balaam: Micah 5:3-6 "O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me. 4. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, I redeemed you from the house of bondage; And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5. O My people, remember now What Balak king of Moab counseled, And what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, From Acacia Grove to Gilgal, That you may know the righteousness of the LORD." 6. With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old?” The talking donkey in human language does fascinate me, but doesn't surprise me. I have heard humans talk like donkeys. Why then can't it be a donkey that speaks like a human and, in fact, represents the Angel of the Lord? Balaam is actually the ultimate politician! He delivers what his audience wants to hear! He is doing it to be paid with gold! He says what his client wants to hear! For our time and reason, if Balaam were to run in our next election, his chances are that he would win and become someone very important and rich. The point and moral of this Torah portion is the following: God can make a prophet out of a donkey and deliver both in words and in actions what God wants to communicate with his people. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah
Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.
Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.
In Finland:
ilse Luukas is having her second melanoma surgery and is asking for success in removing all the cancer. This is a repeat from 2019.
Mauno Lemponen’s health has not changed which is a good thing. They are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his father’s health that is in decline.
Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.
Jordan Issac - a prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)

Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.
Barbra and Angie are in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
