예루살렘 기도 목록 2020년 2월 6일 미국 텍사스주 달라스에서 요셉 슐람
다니엘 스턴과 저는 미국 텍사스주 달라스에 막 도착했습니다. 저희는 내일 텍사스주 휴스턴으로 운전해 가서 금요일과 안식일에 래니어 신학도서관에 참석할 준비를 하고 있습니다. 제가 나눌 말씀의 주제는 “예슈아의 제자가 된 세 명의 탈무드 랍비”입니다.
이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 출애굽기 13:16~16:17입니다. 마침내, 하나님께서 열 재앙으로 애굽을 치신 후에, 바로는 이스라엘 자손을 그들의 가족과 그들의 가축과 애굽의 부와 더불어 애굽 밖으로 내보냈습니다.
그러나 바로는 200년 넘게 애굽을 건설하고 노예로 섬겨온 이 막대한 무료 노동력을 잃는 것이 너무도 못마땅했습니다. 모세와 이스라엘 자손이 애굽을 떠난 후에 바로는 그의 마음을 바꿔 이스라엘 백성을 다시 잡아 그들을 애굽의 노예로 다시 데려오거나 아니면 그냥 그들을 멸절시키고자 했습니다.

물론, 여러분이 하늘과 땅의 창조자이신 하나님의 존재를 염두에 두지 않는다면, 여러분도 바로와 애굽처럼 생각할 것입니다. 그러나 여러분이 하나님을 알고 여러분이 어떤 존재인지, 여러분이 누구인지, 하나님께서는 여러분의 삶에 어떤 분이신지 염두에 둔다면, 공식은 극적으로 바뀝니다. 이것은 이스라엘 4,000년 역사에 걸쳐 이스라엘에 일어난 일입니다.
이번 주에 읽는 말씀에는 하나님의 백성이 하나님을 전쟁의 총 기획자로 경험하게 되는 두 가지 큰 사건이 있습니다: 이스라엘 백성은 홍해를 마른 땅으로 건너고 바로의 군대는 홍해에 빠져 죽는 사건과, 시내 광야에서 아말렉과 이스라엘 사이의 전쟁입니다. 저는 전쟁의 바른 전략을 여러분과 나누고 싶은데요, 그것은 하나님의 백성에게 유리하게 전능하신 하나님께서 예상치 못하고 놀랍게 가담하시는 것을 포함하는 것입니다.
첫 번째 것은 모세와 이스라엘 자손을 대적하여 싸웠던 바로의 전쟁인데요, 모세와 이스라엘 자손이 바로의 군대와 홍해 사이에 갇혔을 때입니다. 사실적으로 이스라엘 자손과 모세는 바로의 군대의 습격과 그들의 승리를 피할 방도가 없었습니다.
한편에는, 전쟁에 대해서 배운 것도 군사 훈련을 받은 적도 없는, 막 애굽에서 달아나 종살이에서 해방된 노예들이 있습니다. 다른 한편에는, 병거와 세상에서 가장 잘 훈련된 군대를 가진 애굽 군대가 있습니다.
제가 왜 애굽인들에 대해 이런 말을 하느냐고요? 학자들이 맞다면, 출애굽은 람세스 2세 혹은 그 이전에 일어났는데요, 그 두 시기는 고대 애굽 역사에서 가장 대단한 시기에 해당되는 시기였기 때문입니다.
이 때 애굽 군대는 아프리카에서 소말리아 땅까지 이르는 전역을 다스렸고, 북동쪽으로는 가나안 온 땅을 애굽이 차지하고 있었고, 서쪽으로는 리디아를 가진 광대한 제국이었습니다.
바로와 그의 군대와 병거가 염두에 두지 않았던 것은 이스라엘의 주 하나님께서 평화의 신이기도 하시지만 전쟁의 신이기도 하시다는 점이었습니다. 하나님께서 전쟁에 돌입하시면, 약한 자들도 강한 자들을 이길 수 있고, 작은 자들이 거인들을 이길 수도 있습니다(다윗과 골리앗의 경우처럼). 불가능은 가능한 일이 되고, 생각지 못한 사건은 현실이 됩니다.

저는 6일 전쟁 전까지는 반전론자, 평화주의자였습니다. 저는 이스라엘의 주 하나님께서 다윗에게 블레셋 거인 골리앗을 이기는 승리를 주셨던 것과 똑같은 방식이로 6일 전쟁 때 큰 네 아랍 군대를 이기도록 바로 그 힘과 그 승리를 다시금 반복하셨다고 믿습니다. 사실적으로 말해, 이집트, 시리아, 요르단, 이라크 각 나라는 전투기, 탱크, 무장 차량 등에서, 그리고 인력에서는 확실하게 이스라엘보다 수적으로 두 배 이상을 가진 만만찮은 군대가 있었습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List February 6, 2020 by Joseph Shulam, from Dallas, Texas, USA
Daniel Stern and I just arrived in Dallas, Texas. We are getting ready to drive tomorrow to Houston, Texas, to participate in the Lanier Theological Library on Friday and on Shabbat. The topic that I will be sharing is, “Three Talmudic Rabbis Who Became Disciples of Yeshua.”
The Torah reading this next Shabbat is from Exodus 13:16-16:17. Finally, after God struck Egypt with ten plagues, Pharaoh sent the children of Israel out of Egypt, with their families, their livestock, and with the wealth of Egypt.
However, Pharaoh was not so happy to lose this great free working force, that built up Egypt and served as slaves for over 200 years. After Moses and the children of Israel left Egypt, Pharaoh changed his mind and wanted to recapture the Israelites, and bring them back to be slaves of Egypt, or just annihilate them completely.
So, Pharaoh gathers his army and his chariots and begins to pursue Israel into the desert. Pharaoh probably said to himself and to his wise man, “See how stupid these Israelites are? They ware walking right into a great trap. The Egyptian army is behind them, and the Red Sea (the sea of reeds) is in front of them.”
Pharaoh could have said to himself, “These Israelites deserve to be slaves, for they know nothing at all! They are just so uneducated about warfare. They are walking right into my trap!”
Of course, if you don’t take the existence of God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, into account, you would think like Pharaoh and Egypt. However, if you know God and take into account what you are, and who you are, and who God is in your life, the formula changes dramatically. This is what has happened to Israel throughout the 4000 years of Israel’s history.
In this week’s reading, there are two major events in which God’s people experienced God as a master planner of warfare: the crossing of the Red Sea on dry land by the Israelites and the drowning of Pharaoh’s army in the sea, and the battle between the Amalekites and Israel in the Sinai desert. I would like to share with you the right strategy of war, that incorporates the unexpected and surprising involvement of the Almighty God in favor of His people Israel.
The first one is the battle of Pharaoh against Moses and the children of Israel, when they were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the sea. Realistically, the children of Israel and Moses had no way to escape the onslaught of Pharaoh’s army, and their victory.
On the one hand, you have slaves who were not learned in warfare, who had no military training, who had just escaped Egypt to be free from slavery. On the other hand, you have the Egyptian army, with their chariots and the best-trained army in the world.
Why do I say this about the Egyptians? If the scholars are right, and the Exodus took place either in the time of Ramses II or earlier, both periods were some of the greatest periods in ancient Egypt’s history.
During this time, Egyptian armies ruled in Africa all the way to the land of Somalia, and in the North and East, Egypt was the owner of all the land of Canaan, with Lydia in the West. A vast empire.
What Pharaoh and his army and chariots didn’t take into account is that the Lord God of Israel is both the God of peace and the God of war. When God enters into a war, the weak can have victory over the strong, the small over the giant (like with David and Goliath). The impossible becomes possible, and the unthinkable becomes a reality.
The Red Sea opened up when Moses struck it with his stick. Israel had victory in the battle with Amalek when Hur and Aaron held up the hands of Moses, and Amalek was defeated by Israel’s recently-released slaves. If some military general would suggest this kind of action, saying, “I guarantee that, if you hold up my hands, you will have a sure victory in the battle,” this general will for sure be admitted into a mental hospital.
Reading this Torah portion we must draw the following conclusions:
1. The battle belongs to the Lord, if we belong to the Lord. With our weaknesses, and with our problems, and with our failures and successes. If we really belong to the Lord, our battles (if for righteousness) also belong to the Lord. 2. When the Lord is involved through His children in the battle – the victory is always His! 3. The Lord God of Israel is not allergic to victory. When He enters the battle, the victory is guaranteed. 4. Please remember that the God of Israel and the father of Yeshua our Messiah is not, and never was, a pacifist. He is the God of peace and also the God of war. He is the God that gives a just reward to those who are His faithful children, and also punishes justly those who are rebellious and negative against Him and His instructions, and His faithfulness.
I used to be anti-war, a pacifist, until the Six-Day War. In the Six-Day War I believe that the Lord God of Israel repeated the same might and the same victory against four major Arab armies in the same way that He gave David the victory over Goliath, the Philistine giant. Realistically-speaking, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, each had a formidable army that outnumbered the Israelites more than double on fighter jets, number of tanks and armored vehicles, and for sure by manpower.
Now, into our private lives as disciples of Yeshua, the same principle that works on the national level of Israel (when the Lord intervenes) also works on our personal and private level. This is not a power or a force that you can manipulate for the Lord to use and grant you. There is no witchcraft or mumbo-jumbo that you can use to make sure that God will fight your battles.
However, there is a true and sincere faith that you are God’s child, and that God loves you, and wants what is good and righteous and true for you, and your family and people. This faith gives you strength and security to stand for God, and be an obedient servant of the Most High, and keep the eyes of your faith open and ready to see His hand move actively in your life.
Please read this portion of the Torah and put yourself (with your mind and imagination) on the beach on the edge of the waters of the Red Sea, with the army of Pharaoh in pursuit, and ask yourself, “Do I have the faith to put my toe in the water, and take the first step into the sea, trusting the Lord to carry me through?”
If you are a disciple of Yeshua, and you have never had to take that leap of faith, and walk out into the unknown and into the adventure of trusting God, I want to encourager you in your life that when the challenge and opportunity to step out by faith in your life comes – take that step. It is not a gamble if you believe that you will never walk alone, but that Yeshua is here with you now.
Don’t be stupid. Be faithful and trust the Lord. When He says to you, “walk” – walk!
I have several new prayer requests:
* Please pray for Marcia my dear wife, - she is at home in Israel and I am in the United States for 10 days to teach in the Lanier Library in Houston, Texas, this weekend, and to participate next week in the Borough Park Symposium in New York City. Please include me and my health issues in your prayers.
* We have a dear sister from Brazil, Michelle, who has to come to Israel to study Hebrew in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and upon arrival had for the first time in her life a kidney stone attack. She needs the Lord’s divine healing and guidance and wisdom.
* Pray for our dear brothers and sisters in China, and especially in the city of Wuhan. Pray also for the government of China and Hubei province to have the wisdom and understanding how to stop this pandemic of the new virus called coronavirus. Also pray that most of the containment of this new virus will be in China and not spread the whole world over.
* Pray for Paula and her children, a dear young sister who has two children and lives in Finland. Her husband has left her and now she is alone with two little children.
* We have a dear sister Cynthia who has been given a very grim medical report on some tests that she had to go through.
These are new prayer requests in addition to the long list of prayer requests that we pray for weekly.

There is one more major prayer request for the State of Israel. I believe that in the history of modern democracies there has never been a country or a state that has had three major national elections one after the other in a period of less than one year. Israel is a country like every other country in the world, and we are a people like every other people in the world.
I think that the State of Israel is making history again, but this time it is not a happy history. It is a result of personal ambition of the leaders of this country and personal disregard for the well-being of the people of this nation, and out of personal hunger to be number one, and always at the top.
Israel needs your prayers! Israel needs your support! Israel needs God! Now more than in any other time since the establishment of this state that has risen out of the ashes of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition, and out of the ashes of the millions of Jews who died in the Nazi death camps in Europe!
The people of Israel deserve better, and we pray that the Lord will intervene in these next elections that will be held on March 2, 2020. The people of Israel need God’s help, and the politicians need to take off their dark glasses and see the reality and the need for a solid government that will face some of the hardest moments in Israel’s modern history.
Give wisdom to our leaders and give true love for the people and the land to our politicians. Please pray with us for Israel as a nation, and the only Jewish State on the face of this world.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children.
